Petroleum refining[edit]

From the rather short discussion in this article, it seems petroleum engineers work on finding petroleum, bringing it to the surface, and designing or using pipelines to transport the oil. However, this article does not say petroleum engineers work in petroleum refining. I suppose that is the area of chemical engineers. Does anybody know if petroleum engineers get involved in petroleum refining?

Re: Petroleum refining[edit]

Petroleum engineers usually do not get involved in petroleum refining. You are correct in your supposition that petroleum refining is the area of chemical engineers.

Types[edit]

I am a student of Petroleum Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. Here at CSM we divide the industry into these sub-categories: Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Engineering, and Production Engineering. The Society of Petroleum Engineers adheres to the same convention. I would suggest changing the name of the category Subsurface Engineer to Production Engineer. A Production Engineer has the same responsibilities as described for a "Subsurface Engineer," but the name "Production Engineer" is more in line with conventional industry terminology.

In the UK and a lot of other places you've also got Production Technologists, and Petrophysicists classified as petroleum engineers, also Drillign Engineering is quite a specific role, as there are completion engineers etc. But i agree witht he idea of calling subsurface engineers production engineers, as subsurface at least in my mind refers to reservoir engineers Philbentley 14:28, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HOLE PACK-OFF[edit]

i'm student from University Technology Malaysia. i want your opinion and hint about one types of drilling problem; hole pack-off. please give any article @ website @ reference about "hole pack-off". thank's —Preceding unsigned comment added by 161.139.212.70 (talk) 04:49, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reservoir Engineers[edit]

Would you categorise a Reservoir Engineer under the banner of Production or Geoscience?

Neither. At a higher level, geoscience would cover geology and petroleum engineering. Subsets of petroleum engineering would be Production Engineering and Reservoir Engineering. Reservoir Engineering deals with determining the size of the reservoir and fluid flow through that porous medium. Production Engineering deals with how the fluid enters the wellbore and is transported to the surface (and in some cases is separated and stored in tanks for sale, or piped to an export / sales through LACT meter.

Updating sources to recent data[edit]

One of the sources cited is the 2017 SPE salary survey. The 2018 version is out which can be found at: https://www.spe.org/industry/docs/2018-Salary-Survey-Highlight-Report.pdf Can someone either change the old figures to the updated figures or reword everything to show the comparison from 2017 to 2018?23.243.114.16 (talk) 00:23, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Adding an Education Heading[edit]

Considering the constant reference to knowledge of different disciplines required and education standards throughout the article, such as in the second paragraph, in the middle of the "Overview" section, and the "Sub-disciplines" section, I feel that it would be beneficial to add an "Education" section. Here we can clearly state what the required knowledge is in each subject and briefly explain their application/significance in Petroleum Engineering in more depth. For example, geostatistics, geology, economics, etc. and how they are used in petroleum engineering. Dpokhriyal (talk) 10:22, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Images for education header[edit]

I have started the "Education" header and would like to add some images, specifically an image for well drilling technologies in order to illustrate the different methods of drilling. However, I am unsure of how/whether I would cite an image. Dpokhriyal (talk) 10:45, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
