Article Name Change[edit]

Hello!

According to the final report (linked below) the flight number for the crashed 9M-MIA aircraft is designated 'flight 839,' not '238.'

https://www.mot.gov.my/en/Archived%20BSKU/1990-1999/1997/9M-MIA%20MERPATI%20INTAN%20SDN%20BHD.pdf

You can see some of the evidence shown in the first line of section 1 'History of Flight.'

If there's a way someone could change the flight number in the article and title, it would be very much appreciated.

@Samoiamo 2 other sources cited in the article indicate flight 238. The report does say 839. Do you know why there's a discrepancy? ~Kvng (talk) 15:28, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’m not so sure, but there might have been some misinformation taken from a single source and was spread out to other sources since.
Reading the report further, the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) transcript which includes the conversation with the crashed flight — around page 38 — also shows that they used the callsign “Brunei 839.”
Keep in mind that the final report wasn’t publicized until late 2023, so we were completely reliant on the information taken from The Nation’s newspaper until this report was released to the Internet a few months ago. Samoiamo (talk) 16:08, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:COMMONNAME suggests we use the most recognizable identifier in the title. I would suggest that more people have read newspaper accounts than the accident report so we might want to retain the current title and add a clarification in the lead that the accident report uses a different number. ~Kvng (talk) 16:33, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
