The little shield thingys[edit]

Um, maybe someone could do something on those little shields that crop up in various places? I think that'd be quite cool.

Like the red shield with a [ x ] on it appears when you turn off your firewall, and the yellow shield with the [ ! ] on it appears when you try to download a file from the internet. Kinda like that, but with little pictures... :D

Naming conventions[edit]

Why is the article titled Windows Action Centre rather than Windows Security Centre? Although WSC is under WAC in windows 7 the service and service description and all the MS documentation I've read refer to it as Windows Security Service, whereas the Action Centre is just a group of seperate windows components (windows update, windows backup etc) and a little gui. WAC and WSC not the same thing. 93.97.65.151 (talk) 22:09, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you must have read some very obscure documentation or else they were not Windows 7's. In Windows 7, there is no such a thing as Security Center at all. It is just Action Center. Nonetheless, we still do have a "Windows Security Center Service" (WSCSVC) in Windows 7 but I don't think you mean that at all, do you? Fleet Command (talk) 22:30, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Windows 10 Naming Confusion[edit]

Due to the Windows 10 "Action Center" sharing this name, should this page default to a disambiguation among the Windows 10, Windows Mobile, and Windows XP through 8.1 Action Centers? I can foresee confusion with the prominent placement of the new "Action Center" in Windows 10. TheGeekHead (talk) 05:54, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I was about to make the same statement, which is why I added the Action Center from Windows Phone 8.1 earlier where Windows 10's, and Windows 10 Mobile's "Action Center" debuted on, hopefully Microsoft will rebrand this app by the time of the operating system's launch so we can have a situation akin to Microsoft Surface Vs. Microsoft PixelSense.

TheGeekHead Also the "Action Center" in Windows Phone 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 10 Mobile are actually all and the same, so I'd suggest getting a separate page for that after the subject has gotten enough coverage (see: WP:NOTABILITY) as it's basically redirecting users to 2 different pages for the same thing, and the page should be modeled after Apple's Notification Center page, of course this is talking about long term developments, but so far the Apple page only has 5 references, I can find 5 distinct references on the Windows Phone 8.1 "Action Center" alone already, and I think that there's the same level of coverage for the Windows 10 version(s) (though I would be a harder on those sources as they're mostly based on a preview version and not the final product), so after the subject will be notable enough we should make an article about the Windows 10 + WP8.1 version.

Windows 7 / 8 Action Center renamed to Security and Maintenance in Windows 10[edit]

The current article should be renamed to Security and Maintenance. A new article on Action Center with Windows 10 and Phone 8.1 information should be created. See a preview at User:WinMetro/Action Center. --WinMetro (talk) 20:36, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I like it, I'd say let's wait until the official launch of Windows 10 and then rename this page and launch your page as "the new Action Center", until then I'd say that all you'd have to do is add a bit sources (as I've stated above I can easily find 10 different reliable sources writing about the functionality and history of first the Windows Phone 8.1 Action Center and the newer Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile Action Centres), so far the article looks nice.

Language[edit]

Hello, everyone. Hello, Warren.

I am here to discussion several of your questionable contributions to the article.

First, revision 814763277, whose edit summary reads: ' "usurped" may be fun to say on a message board, but it isn't encyclopedic language. Rewording this with more neutral language.' Wikipedia is not written from neutralized point of view, but a neutral point of view. It means Wikipedia writes without bias and without passing judgment but, unlike what you did, does not tamper with facts to make them less blunt.

Second, there is no such thing as "UWP application". It is "UWP app".

Best regards,

This isn't a good enough justification for reverting all my edits, Lisa, including the ones about separating the component's curre names from its previous ones from the lead sentence (thus making it easier to read), and moving a bit of other text around to that the list of changes with WSDC are all in one place. Your two items must be addressed using targeted edits, not blanket reverts. Warren -talk- 20:31, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Warren:. Lisa is an admin here. I am "Codename Lisa". That said, this only one of the two topics I opened here. The second one is below.

Stay on topic -- I want to hear your justification for why the word "usurped" must belong in the article, given that it is clearly not the correct English word. Warren -talk- 20:46, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
First "Clearly" is editorializing. If you think using it gives you an edge in the discussion, you are wrong.
Second, Wikipedia itself uses "usurp" in this context in WP:USURP and WP:USURPTITLE. Also, I believe given the confusion caused by the sudden transferrance of the name, strong wording is required. Only I didn't find a stronger word that does not cause editorializing. Hence, using metaphor was out of question.

Hello, Warren
Thanks for all these great edits! That's a spectacular improvement over the previous versions.

Notability[edit]

Hello

Security and Maintenance is a notable topic, proven by the sources that have been in the article so far. This means it merits having its own article.

Windows Defender Security Center, a separate app, is not notable yet. So, please do not usurp a notable topic for a non-notable topic. Even if it becomes notable one day, Security and Maintenance remains notable. A decision to merge the two must then be carefully analyzed based on WP:SIZERULE.

Finally, even if usurpation was allowed, that does not mean it is appropriate to change just the title and the first boldface mention. This is what vandals do.

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 20:33, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, Windows Defender Security Center is a built-in component of Windows 10 that performs the same function as Security and Maintenance that preceded it. There is no notability issue here; this is merely the next version of the same thing that Microsoft has been building into Windows for 13+ years. Warren -talk- 20:49, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Versions replace each other. These exist side-by-side. Also, notability is not inherited. As for performing the same function, the article says otherwise. Finally, WP:NOTCENSORED. I am allowed to write about an old and notable version just because I fancy doing so.

Move discussion in progress[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Microsoft Defender which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 22:00, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
