Criteria[edit]

I wonder about the criteria for inclusion in this template. At the moment, the main criterion seems to be that there is or was a paved runway, no matter if it is a large or a small field or whether it is civil or military. However, with consistent maintenance, the defunct list would then become about as long as the other lists combined. Not sure if such a focus on the past was intended when the template was created. The main problem is that in English language use every aerodrome with a 300 m gravel runway is usually called "airport", disregarding the definition in the article Airport - see Road Commission Airport. In German language there are "Flughäfen" (real airports), "Landeplätze" (airfields) and "Segelfluggelände" (glider airfields).

Even though it has scheduled services many times a day, Wangerooge Airfield is correctly called "airfield" (official status is "Verkehrslandeplatz").

The language problem is nicely mentioned in the French WP article fr:Aérodrome#Terminologie anglaise.

The List of "airports" in Germany is equally deficient. I wonder how a tiny airfield like Bad Gandersheim "Airport" (725 m grass runway, closed Monday to Friday) made it into this list.

As long as no difference is being made in (especially US-) English, it might be difficult to agree on a definition for inclusion of aerodromes in this template. --Uli Elch (talk) 20:58, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Elsewhere the criteria have been to have (or had) an IATA code or has/had regular commercial passenger service - scheduled or charter. If an airport can claim any of these, then it goes on the list. Would this be a useful criterion ? Pmbma (talk) 13:44, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds acceptable to me. Since I'm pretty much familiar with the German aviation scene I might volunteer to do the sorting.

Just noticed that Airports in Germany template doesn't contain Bad Gandersheim airport, but that it is mentioned on the List of airports in Germany. Sorry about my not paying proper attention ! There seems to be a convention amongst all countries that the former template type (e.g. Airports in Germany) contains just airports with an IATA code or has / recently had passenger service or is in some way particularly notable, while the latter template type (e.g. List of airports in Germany) contains additionally a longer list of airfields and aerodromes, each having just a very brief mention. Perhaps we should leave it as is... one template showing just the more important airports/aerodromes... while the other is a more complete list of airstrips in each country ? It would perhaps be a shame to remove likely accurate information from List of airports in Germany, along with other countries, when it has been compiled by numerous people over the years. I agree that the term 'airport' is maybe overused on List of airports in Germany but rather difficult to decide what is an airport, air field, aerodrome or air strip as mentioned by Uli Eich. I think the structure of an aerodrome list as existing in the Swedish WP (sv:Lista över flygplatser i Tyskland) is a good example of how such lists can be divided into different types of aerodromes.

It contains (in that sequence) international airports, major regional airports, ("special airports" is a German specialty), minor regional aerodromes, remaining airfields including glider, finally defunct aerodromes.

You all certainly know that "aerodrome" is the parent category for all kinds of airports, airfields, landing and glider sites etc.

In contrast to the templates (for which I agree with the proposal above) the Lists of Aerodromes should be complete. --Uli Elch (talk) 18:55, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
