BCS champion[edit]

I reverted Matt Yeager's addition of quotes to the Champions category label. The identity of the BCS champion each year is always clear (for better or for worse), and this template is for the BCS, not for the Mythical National Championship. It's not Wikipedia's fault that since the BCS has come into existence that people have tended to conflate the two. Having a link to the MNC page (and having the word "Mythical" visible) is sufficient indication that being the BCS champion isn't necessarily everything in college football. Notre Dame[edit]

A long time ago an editor replaced Notre Dame in the template with Independents. I'm going to put Notre Dame back. It belongs there because a) it was one of the BCS founders, along with the six BCS conferences, and b) because of the resulting special "Notre Dame rule" in the BCS system. (Army or Navy wouldn't automatically qualify the way Notre Dame would if either were to finish in the top eight.) YLee (talk) 07:02, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine, but can we find a better row title than "Conferences" since ND is not a conference. Perhaps "Members"? —Eustress talk 16:20, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Members" doesn't work because, technically speaking, all 11 Divison I-A conferences are part of the BCS and are considered "BCS conferences" even if no one outside the BCS organization uses this definition. Notre Dame isn't a conference, but for purposes of BCS bowl placement and payment it is treated as a conference champion along with the six BCS conferences' champions, as long as it finishes in the top eight. All right. I would propose inserting an asterisk with a clarifying comment, then, as is done on {{Big_East_Conference}}, to clarify. Would that be reasonable? —Eustress talk 18:08, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Ylee (talk) 21:51, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
