Hopefully putting examples here won't overcrowd Wikipedia's servers (if it does, feel free to remove them). Anyways, I don't know too much about coding templates but I'm hoping you can help me out on this. Above are a few examples that I played with. In order to allow the user to have the option of using team colors, I think it may be best to have a switch, say an argument called |teamcolors=, where any entry would mean "yes". If marked, then the template would show the team's colors, where if unmarked, it would leave it as the soft colors as shown in the first example.

To get the team colors in, I believe what you would have to do is replace style="background-color: {{{hdr_bgcolor|#ccccff}}}; color: {{{hdr_txtcolor|#000}}}; text-align: center;"

with style="{{CollegePrimaryColor|{{{team}}}}}; {{CollegeSecondaryColor|{{{team}}}}}; text-align:center;"

Since {{{CollegePrimaryColor|Akron Zips}}} would generate background: #00285C, it should fit just fine.

And then to make the second row colors, the template calls for |- style="background-color: {{{subhdr_bgcolor|#e6e6fa}}}; color: {{{subhdr_txtcolor|#000}}}; text-align: center;"

I believe if this is replaced with |- style="{{CollegeSecondaryColor|{{{team}}}}}; {{CollegePrimaryColor|{{{team}}}}}; text-align: center;", then it should also fit just fine. Notice that I inverted this part, mostly because I think it looks better this way.

Please let me know if this works. Like I said, I would try it myself but I don't know how, and to be honest I've never edited templates this intricate before (although if you can show me, I'd be glad to learn). Thanks a lot for the work you do and the excellent templates!  –Nav  talk to me or sign my guestbook 22:48, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I think I got it. Your suggestions would pretty much correct. I do agree that the inverted looks better, unfortunately, the way those primary and secondary color templates are set up, I don't think it can be done. Its real unfortunate. Whoever created those templates did it in a real inefficient manner. It would have been much better to just have the hex codes and then let the template code decide how to use the color. But by hardcoding in the background and color css codes, it really limits how they can be used.—NMajdantalk 15:33, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I mentioned this issue at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football#Template issue.—NMajdantalk 15:42, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Somebody at the College football WikiProject created {{CollegePrimaryHex}} and {{CollegeSecondaryHex}} and I have implemented those new templates here and switched it to the inverted format.—NMajdantalk 22:10, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Autolinking player names?[edit]

I like this new format, but I think that player names should not be autolinked. The vast majority of college players don't and probably will not have their own pages, if they are even notable enough to merit them. So the result of autolinking their names on the roster is a whole lot of red links, and some blue links that are frequently to different people with the same name. While pretty much all NBA players are notable enough to have their own pages and thus merit autolinking, I don't think it's necessary or desirable at the college level, and any linking should have to be done manually for notable players with articles. WildCowboy (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I was thinking about this. I copied this pretty much from the NBA roster template and they use a convoluted method for the name linking. Unfortunately, it would be a little difficult to change now that this template is starting to be used. But, I'll see what I can do. I changed how the name was formatted for {{American football roster}}, which I created recently.—NMajdantalk 19:37, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done.—NMajdantalk 21:18, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome...thanks! WildCowboy (talk) 22:11, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nmajdan, is there a good way to link to differently-titled articles? I'm disambiguating and trying to link to Mark Jackson (basketball) rather than Mark Jackson, which is a dab. The only way I've found so far is to pipe-link both the first and last name:
{{CBB roster/Player|first=[[Mark Jackson (basketball)|Mark]]|last=[[Mark Jackson (basketball)|Jackson]]
This is awkward and doesn't look good since there are two links for the same name. Nick Number (talk) 16:44, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Redshirt[edit]

Is there a reason "RS" appears rather than the redshirt icon listed in the table's key?

The redshirt icon is for players who are currently redshirting and is activated with the "cur_rs=yes" parameter. The "rs=yes" parameter indicates whether they have redshirted in the past, and is reflected in their "Year" entry within the table with an "RS" designation. See 2010–11 Richmond Spiders men's basketball team for an example. WildCowboy (talk) 13:43, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graduate Students Listing[edit]

There should be an option to list a player as a graduate student. For example, Drexel guard Chris Fouch is a 6th-year senior because he was redshirted twice. Thus, he should be listed as a RS Gr, not a RS Sr. Zachlp (talk) 22:24, 3 December 2013 (EST)

It's been quite some time since your post, but I agree. Graduate students should be listed as Graduate students and not seniors.Ncjon (talk) 14:00, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 3 June 2019[edit]

Please can you add a legend for "Director of Basketball Operations". NBHC (talk) 19:39, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please make your proposed change to Template:CBB roster/Footer/sandbox — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:12, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. Will need to see if we even need to list the Director of Basketball Operations, let alone need a specific legend for them on top of that. And, as requested by MSGJ, please sandbox any changes you wish to propose as proof-of-concept. Primefac (talk) 12:21, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Another possible classification[edit]

There's another possible classification now: "fifth year". Due to COVID disruptions, the NCAA ruled that the 2020–21 season would not count against any basketball player's athletic eligibility. This means that some teams will have "fifth year" players AND graduate students. For example, Iowa's 2022–23 men's roster lists Filip Rebraca as "Fifth Year" and Connor McCaffery as a "Graduate Student", and its 2022–23 women's roster has no "Graduate Student", but lists Monika Czinano as "Fifth Year". New heading for Dismissed players[edit]

There is no designation specific to a case where a player is dismissed from the team/school in mid-season (eg Darius Miles, Alabama, 2022-23). The closest designation is S (Suspended). I propose adding another designation to reflect the Dismissed scenario as X - Removed from Team. This reflects that the player did participate during the season, but was not on the team roster at season's end (dismissed from team, expelled from school, etc.) for administrative/disciplinary reasons.
