Holy shit this needs a major reworking. I'll get around to it sometime. Night Gyr 03:27, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is there really a need for a template this large? Right now, it consists of a huge list of redlinked names, most of which probably will never have articles. Most of these people seem non-notable, and the template could survive without them. As it is now, this template goes on the bottom of two dozen TV station pages; each of these pages already has several other templates, resulting in articles consisting mainly of templates. Can this be pared down?--Firsfron of Ronchester 23:20, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps it should be broken up into smaller templates. For example, maybe one for local U.S. publications, one for national U.S. publications, one for Newsquest U.K. publications (which aren't even included here!), one for Gannett TV, and another for the company at large including corporate execs and other properties? -Tobogganoggin talk 23:04, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

At the very least make it collapsed by default, or provide a 'state' parameter so an individual article can show it collapsed if its editors choose. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 22:17, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nested templates[edit]

We all seem to agree this template is far too long. So here's my solution: nested templates. Note that each of the "inner" templates has full v-d-e links, so it shouldn't be too hard to edit this thing (for the record: the first, with U.S. newspapers, is called "Template:Gannettnews"; the second, with U.S. television stations, is "Template:GannettTV"; and the third, with U.K. holdings, is "Template:Newsquest".

At some point I'll try to figure out whether we can really make this thing sing by altering the markup on the calling page to tell the "parent" template (GCI) to make one of the "child" templates expand on a given page. Frankly, it's making my brain hurt right now, but then, I'm no computer programmer. Tell me what you think, guys. ``` W i k i W i s t a h ``` 03:34, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I like it. Now I'm just trying to figure whether calling-articles that belong to one of the subgroups should include the full "GCI" template, as in The Tennessean, or if it should only include the group template, as in The Marion Star (in this case, "Gannetnews"). -Tobogganoggin talk 21:51, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For my money, I think all calling articles should feature the full template. Gannett's corporate structure, ownership of USA Today and television holdings are almost as relevant to The Marion Star as its far-flung regional newspaper holdings. ``` W i k i W i s t a h ``` 20:56, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Des Moines Register[edit]

Maybe it would be appropriate to add another level to the template - the Des Moines Register is listed alongside a bunch of local papers despite being the only real state newspaper in Iowa - I don't know if the company publishes any other state papers, but if they do it may be appropriate to create a section for state papers. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 14:38, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
