Standardization of state templates[edit]

There is currently an ongoing discussion regarding standardization of state templates (primarily regarding layout and styling) at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. states/state templates. An effort was made earlier this year to standardize Canadian province templates (which mostly succeeded). Lovelac7 and I have already begun standardizing all state templates. Towns/Cities?[edit]

I mentioned this on the talk page of the NC page, but I wanted to comment here as well regarding the template.

It seems that the template designation of cities and towns -- as well as the designation of which places are "major" -- is either based on population, renown, or listed arbitrarily. For example, Cary and Chapel Hill remain "towns" as of 2021. They have not been incorporated as cities legally or otherwise.

I recommend that this section of the NC template should be reorganized (a) to match the city/town status, (2) to decide what guideline/criteria should separate the large city from the not-large, and (3) to determine whether a place should be listed under "major towns" or not at all.

I don't think its appropriate to list ALL towns and ALL cities in the state. This raises questions like just because someplace is incorporated as a NC city, should it be listed in the NC WP template? Are there towns so small in size (or whatever) that they shouldn't be included?

As a lifelong NC citizen whose lived happily in multiple "towns" and "cities" of vastly different sizes, in no way is it my intention to indicate importance in any way. It's just essential to have consistent criteria for the template.
