Reform needed[edit]

This template needs work. The stations in the outer areas (Flagstaff, Prescott, Kingman, Holbrook, Lake Havasu) need to be separated (two need to be added), links need to be established to Tucson, Imperial Valley, Las Vegas, and maybe even Albuquerque (most of NM is served by one station per network: should we merge the Intrastate templates for AZ and NM? It sure makes sense. -Tracker 22:27, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are over 200 full- and low-power television stations just in the Phoenix DMA, most of which don't even reach anywhere near Phoenix. In addtion, most are simply translators of the Phoenix stations. I don't recommend putting all of these into the PHX TV template; instead I propose the following ideas:

  • Create a Northern Arizona TV template for stations in the Phoenix market whose signals do not reach the Phoenix area. Casa Grande, Duncan and Globe would also be here since they are in the Phoenix market although technically not in northern Arizona
  • Exclude rebroadcasters, unless they are full-service or Class A satellites, or have had original or network programming of their own in the past. This will keep a Northern Arizona template manageable. Possible exceptions: station clusters with few stations, such as KKAX-LP 36 Kingman/K23BJ Lake Havasu City or K18DD Camp Verde/K23FZ Camp Verde.
  • The only stations in the PHX TV template should be the 27 stations serving the Valley cities, plus KMOH-TV, KTVW-CA, KAZT-TV, KDTP and KFPH-TV, because they either have LPTV repeaters in Phoenix, or are Class A repeaters of Phoenix stations. I suggest also including KQBN-LP because they are a licensed station with a CP to build new facilities in the Valley, and K30ES because they are also a licensed station and they have an application to build a station that will reach the Valley. I could make a case for K43CO and KCAB-LP in Casa Grande, although their signals don't reach Phoenix either.
  • If rebroadcasters are going to be included, then I'd suggest separate templates for Mohave County/Northwest Arizona (about 60 stations), Prescott/Verde Valley/North Central Arizona (about 35), Flagstaff/Northern Arizona (about 35), and Eastern Arizona (about 60).

I was already working on something like this (without rebroadcasters), but thought I'd put it out to the community first to see if there was consensus (or better ideas). dhett 01:42, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My suggestion is this: include articles for all of the originating stations, and document repeater and satellite stations within the article for the originating station. For repeaters that bring in stations from outside the DMA, use this syntax: [[KZZZ-TV|K72ZZ 72]]. For the satellite repeaters (like K25DM), a brief article is probably appropriate. As (I assume) most of the stations in Arizona are just translators, this should cut down the number of stations significantly. --AlexDW 12:35, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're correct; most of the stations are merely translators, which is why I was thinking of not including them in the template at all. However, I would keep full-service and Class A repeaters. I guess I should remove K23BY and K55EH and merely provide links to the pages in the KAZT-TV and KAZT-CA articles.

Still, counting only stations that offer local and satellite-delivered programming in the Phoenix DMA, which is all of Arizona except Pima, Cochise and Yuma counties and the northern half of Apache county, we're still looking at 57 licensed stations in the market, plus 13 CPs that I consider likely to see a station built, bringing the total to 70. That's a lot. --dhett 07:12, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reform Proposal[edit]

I have created templates in my own workspace to possibly replace the current PHX TV template, which has grown so large, it looks cluttered. These are the templates:

Please look them over, choosing between the two outlying station templates, and let me know your preference, if any. Thanks. -dhett 09:13, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
