WIN-911 Software is a software company based in Austin, Texas, United States that develops alarm notification solutions used primarily for the monitoring of problem conditions in the machinery used in public infrastructure and manufacturing facilities – specifically in water and wastewater treatment facilities, electric grid, manufacturing plants, and oil and gas pipelines.[1][2]

The company, founded in 1974[3], is best known for the early development and maintenance of alarm systems for industrial control systems. Its WIN-911 Software is used by 197 of 500 Fortune 500 companies[2]

History[edit]

WIN-911 Software was founded in Houston, Texas in 1974 by Bill Rose[4] as ‘Specter Instruments’ in response to growing demand in the field of process control automation.[5] Specter Instruments started out manufacturing industrial communications hardware.

In 1992, the company released the first version of Win-911, a software-based communication platform. The software allowed large industrial complexes to setup real-time remote alarm notification systems so that operators could be notified of any problems, shutdowns, or changes. With the success of Win-911 Software, which overtook the Specter's hardware products in popularity, the company exited the hardware business in the early 2000s.

In 2013, Specter Instruments was renamed WIN-911 Software, the name of its best selling product.[6] In 2014, the company formed an alliance with Micromedia International[7], in an agreement where each company acquired a stake in the other company, and opened a European office in 2014.[7][8] As of December 2017, WIN-911 Software is based in Austin Texas, and a satellite office in Grenoble France. The company has 40 employees.[9]

Products[edit]

WIN-911 Software is the company's flagship product.[10] The software enables real time remote alarm and event notification of industrial systems and technologies. [11] WIN-911 works with SCADA, DCS, and other systems to monitor operations and notify the problem conditions.[12][2] WIN-911 is built to send the alarms to the appropriate person. [2][13][1]

In February 2017, US Patent Office issued WIN-911 a Software Patent for a method and system for remote alarm event notifications for automated aachinery.[14] The company uses its software and customer base to develop products for the Industrial Internet of Things.[15]

Past products included EasyLinx Factory Floor network, a system to connect all devices on the factory floor, and UniLinx, a customer defined Universal Protocol useful in manufacturing system networks - from weigh scales and temperature readers to Inverters and AC Drives.[16]

Customers[edit]

Win-911 Software's Alarm solutions are used by a wide array of customers, from the largest of enterprises down to small businesses, and across several industries (education, financial services, manufacturing, design, government, technology, retail, healthcare, construction, commercial real estate, public utilities, and transportation). Some Win-911 customers are:

WIN-911 Software is a member in the Rockwell Automation PartnerNetwork.[24]

Recent Events[edit]

Win-911 opened offices in Grenoble, France in October 2014.[8][25] As of November 2016, the company's software for factory automation, relied on exports for about 15% of its revenue.[26]

The company's software was selected for One World Trade Center in New York City and the Masjid al Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Most recently, WIN-911 software has been installed at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France.
