This looks like your personal blog. I rather don't think that's an appropriate external link for Wikipedia, particularly not for a Featured Article. No disrespects, but I'm sure you'll acknowledge the article wouldn't be improved if every fan of Tchaikovsky added their personal blog, and thus we'll have to draw the line at no such links being appropriate. Comment/question: My edit was to add a title to a cite. The title contained a smiley, which consists of a semicolon and an unpaired right parenthesis. This is not an error, but an emoticon, which the bot should be trained to recognize.

Auric talk 17:20, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Smileys in encyclopedia articles are very rare, and there's a very wide variety of smileys. Training the bot to recognize them all would be rather inefficient. I think we'll have to live with a few false positives. Huon (talk) 12:31, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

Diff: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=685772042

Comment/question:

I'm afraid that I don't understand what the problem is; your ReferenceBot did not say what precisely it disagreed with, it just highlighted EVERY one of my entries for Samuel Bellamy. I am Dr. Jim Cunningham, the manager, docent and historian for the Whydah Pirate Museum, having succeeded the late great historian Kenneth J. Kinkor; my employer, underwater explorer Barry Clifford, discovered and is the sole owner of, by court order, the entire wreck and all contents of the pirate commodore Samuel Bellamy's flagship Whydah Gally, and it is currently the only fully authenticated pirate shipwreck on earth.
Our Expedition Whydah was approved and authorized by the Massachusetts State Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources which also called us a model of private underwater archaeology, and has been sponsored by, and presented in multiple documentaries by, National Geographic Society, Discovery Channel, History Channel, History II Channel, BBC and PBS, as well as every major publication in the world; we were also the only Nautical museum to be named in New York Times' list of top museums in America. We also have two traveling exhibits under the auspices of National Geographic and are right now constructing another major exhibit in Yarmouth Cape Cod. Our Team has written a number of historical books on the subject, we have worked in conjunction with some of the foremost pirateologists and historians in the world, we are the creator of the Whydah Source Book [WSB] containing nearly forty years of archival research with records from England, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and the American colonial states, including thousands of Source Document Manuscripts, which includes the entire seven month court trial of the Whydah survivors, and the logs of the ships captured by Samuel Bellamy, eye witness testimonies, government reports, even a letter from the Whydah's original owner to the governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony discussing the Whydah and the pirates - much of which has never even been published before. Our team is much sought after for lectures on the Golden Age of Piracy at schools, religious venues, government venues, museums and historical conventions. Barry Clifford himself is an official orator for National Geographic Society and a member of The Explorers Club.
We are the world's historical experts on the issue of Samuel Bellamy and the Whydah Galley; and quite frankly, we ourselves are the reference for the data in the Samuel Bellamy page. I have put references on the page, but it cannot possibly be expected for us to just freely list all of the thousands of documents that make up the whole picture of the story of Samuel Bellamy which we have painstakingly gathered at great cost (both financially and in blood, sweat and tears), from which we composed the data on the Samuel Bellamy page. If there is something in particular that we have posted that you would like clarification on, I would be glad to respond to it. In the mean time, kindly restore the data I have posted for Samuel Bellamy. And in fact, we formally request exclusive editing access for the Samuel Bellamy, Whydah Gally, and Barry Clifford pages and for them to be locked to outside tampering, as it is not humanly possible for anyone else to have superior data on these subjects, and any outside data would probably be repeatedly debunked pirate myth anyway.
PS... This contact form requested, above, that I give the link to the "diff". I haven't the slightest clue what that means, and I really wish Wikipedia was a little more self explanatory. Not knowing what diff is, I posted the link to the page from your ReferenceBot that shows my edits to the Samuel Bellamy page. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I may be contacted at BellamyCay@yahoo.com, at our museum phone (508) 487-8899, or my direct line(954) 324-5071.

(For the record, I am a monthly financial contributor to Wikipedia.)

If you check the diff the bot gave you, at the very bottom of the page you'll find that highlighted error message; you used both the "page=" and the "pages=" parameters, but they serve the same purpose, and only one of them should be used ("pages" is for, say "pages 3–5", not for "the work has 62 pages in total"). Comment/question: I'm sorry that I missed out that bracket - I was having a lot of trouble trying to make sense of the many and varied mistakes in the information in the paragraphs that I must have overlooked that bracket. I don't know who it was who composed the page/information but it was a total mish- mash of the most awful errors I've ever seen on a Wikipedia page. Even after I corrected my bracket error, I saw several more glaring mistakes which I hope I have correctly corrected. Having looked at the text again, it seems to me that the previous typing had been done by someone even less experienced at editing than myself because there were several instances of quotation marks being used instead of double apostrophes; some actors and films didn't have brackets round their names, even though they all have Wikipedia pages and some of the dates were incorrect and some of the information was out of order, time-wise.

Please excuse my lengthy reply but I felt I had to try to justify my omission of one bracket. regards Julie Ceeforcat (talk) 18:49, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

@Ussr 1991: The bot notified you because when you copied content from the BM25 Musudan article to the R-27 Zyb article you copied only a part of one footnote, leaving it half-broken. I have fixed that. Regarding the proper title of the Musudan article, there currently doesn't seemt to be a consensus, with yourself arguing that it should be named something else entirely. I don't think moving the article somewhere else without an agreement on the most appropriate title will help; it's better to wait and establish consensus first. Huon (talk) 20:44, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

If you check the "References" section in the diff provided by the bot, you'll find a big red error message: "Cite error: A list-defined reference named "Xenbase" is not used in the content". That's because in your edit you removed the part of the article where that list-defined reference was used, but didn't remove the reference along with its only use. That was in 2014; the error has long since been fixed. Huon (talk) 23:38, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Comment/question: The bot had this to say about the above edit. I don't see any problem with the refs, and when I click 'Fix', the bot suggest no modifications to the article. The only reason I can think of was that when I put August 2 as the access date, it was August 2 in my time zone, but August 1 in the bot's, so it thought the date was in the future. The other possible reason: the ref had no title in this diff (indeed a problem), but this was fixed 3 minutes later. If the bot caught that I think it should say so, but also give a grace period of at least ~15 minutes-ish.

Ynhockey (Talk) 07:39, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

If you check the references section in the diff above you will find a red error message that says, "Unknown parameter |month= ignored (help); Missing or empty |title= (help)". Both issues have since been fixed, but the "month" issue persisted for longer than the bot's grace period of about 10 minutes. The bot's "Fix" link just opens the page for editing without suggesting specific changes because the bot isn't smart enough to figure out how to fix the problems it notifies human editors about. Comment/question: bad parameter checking is over the top obnoxious. There are reasons to bury a data item in a misnamed parameter, so at least allow us to have the placeholder parameters (1=, 2=, 3= etc.) to not print data, yet keep complete information in the cite templates. FrankB 01:04, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

I don't see the purpose of storing invisible information. If that's important to the citation, our readers should be able to see it. If it isn't, why keep it? In this particular case, authors varying by chapter is the default expectation for books where only the editor's name is given; there's no need to point it out separately. Secondly, Wikipedia content should be based on reliable published sources. For example, Indianapolis Monthly gave your husband's name as "Jack". Firstly, this is not a ReferenceBot issue but appears to be about something that happened in 2008 or 2009. This may not be the best venue to discuss those events. Secondly, you would need to provide evidence that you are indeed the copyright holder of that content and are willing to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License. To us you're just someone who happens to have chosen "RayPointer" as their Wikipedia username; we'll need evidence that you really are Ray Pointer. Thirdly, you may want to check out WP:Identifying reliable sources and WP:SELFCITE. I'm not particularly familiar with the website where your text was originally published, but I rather don't think it was subject to the editorial oversight Wikipedia would require of reliable sources, and it did not cite any references of its own. Page: The Rotoscope Diff: Not applicaple Comment/question: The reference to an alleged "copyright violation" for quotations posted by someone from "Finding Ko-Ko" are from my own writing, but not referenced. Further, the vast majority of information being posted has been paraphrased or incorrectly phrased by amateur researches in an effort to avoid "plagiarism" and are also not properly referenced.

As the originator of the text in question, I have the right to post the correct content from my own sources and knowledge of this subject. For the record, I have a forthcoming book due out the end of the year, "The Art and Inventions of Max Fleischer: American Animation Pioneer" that should be the most comprehensive information source ever published. And any references from it should surely set a higher standard for the benefit of Wikipedia and those doing serious research. I look forward to your reply. RayPointer (talk) 13:53, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for details. I apologize for the inconvenience, but you'll appreciate that we are only trying to save you from possible impostors. Merely basing content on your personal experiences would be considered original research, and Wikipedia is the wrong venue for that. Huon (talk) 20:03, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

@Tony1: You changed the minus sign into a dash within the reference names, and - not sure whether that was a side effect of your edit or not - some referece names spelled "Encyclopaedia" with a ligature "æ" while others just had "e". @Upergodzilla123: As a reference for that information you added the code <ref name="SchillerCast" />. That code is meant to create a footnote that links again to a reference named "SchillerCast" defined elsewhere in the article. However, the article didn't have any other reference of that name; thus the code you added couldn't work and just led to a red warning message in the references section. Fixed. Fentanyl

Diff:

Comment/question:

I made a change to the Fentanyl page.I removed a reference that did not support the statement that it was attached to. The sentence was "The fentanyl patch is one of a small number of drugs that may be especially harmful, and in some cases fatal, with just one dose, if used by someone other than the person for whom the drug was prescribed." The reference is to an advice webpage at http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/BuyingUsingMedicineSafely/EnsuringSafeUseofMedicine/SafeDisposalofMedicines/ucm186187.htm that includes the statement "There is a small number of medicines that may be especially harmful and, in some cases, fatal with just one dose if they are used by someone other than the person for whom the medicine was prescribed."

There was no mention *whatsoever* of fentanyl anywhere on that webpage.

The reference seems to be there only in connection with copying the words nearly verbatim (while changing them enough to say something different!), but it does *not* support the statement. So the statement still needs a proper citation.

Strange. To me the source says: "For example, patients in assisted living communities using fentanyl patches for pain should immediately flush their used or unneeded patches...", giving them as an example of those especially harmful medications. Seems relevant enough. Huon (talk) 00:51, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Docolusanya (talk) 00:27, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

@Docolusanya: When you removed that section, you also used the single place where a list-defined reference was used. That produced an error message because it left the article with a list-defined reference that wasn't used anywhere any more. Fixed. Huon (talk) 00:51, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Comment/question: The link contains what looks like two URLs combined in error, but both are required to reach the target page.

JGabbard (talk) 02:00, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

@JGabbard: What you gave as an URL was "http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/films-videos-sound-recordings/rpm/Pages/image.aspx?Image=nlc008388.5502a&URLjpg=http%3a%2f%2fwww.collectionscanada.gc.ca%2fobj%2f028020%2ff4%2fnlc008388.5502a.gif&Ecopy=nlc008388.5502a Bac-lac.gc.ca". The problem is the space near the end and the part following it. I don't think that's actually part of the URL; it's not needed, and it causes that error message. Fixed. Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, ReferenceBot (talk) 00:27, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

I think you misunderstand the term "public domain", which has a specific meaning in copyright law. It's not "has been published". That said, press releases are not appropriate references for biographical content anyway. Huon (talk) 02:32, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

I've turned some of the references into inline citations. Personally I doubt the film is notable yet, and I'd really like to know how you could tell the plot of an as yet unreleased movie in that much detail. Not from the sources, that's for sure. Huon (talk) 19:51, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

That should be discussed at the article's talk page. ReferenceBot notified you (whoever of the edit-warring parties you are) because in the process of that edit-war, various problems with references emerged. They all have been fixed by now. Huon (talk) 03:22, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Comment/question: I didn't modify the highlighted URL. However, after receiving your notification, I did go to Common Cause, and using their website's search engine, determined that the URL did not produce a story: It no longer existed on their site, though the phrase "DeLay's transgressions" was contained twice in other stories. So the problem is a dead link with which I had nothing to do. Activist (talk) 02:39, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Firstly, BracketBot is an automated program that notified you more than a year ago because your edits caused mismatched brackets (and parentheses. The bot did not revert your changes; that was done by Loriendrew and Fountains of Bryn Mawr. They gave the reason as "OR", which is short for "original research", something Wikipedia does not allow. This is an encyclopedia, not a personal journal or group blog, and we cannot just rely on your personal recollections of that wonderful experience. You will need to provide reliable published sources for your additions that allow our readers to verify the content on their own. Huon (talk) 19:29, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
