September 2012[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "AMArtCons", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because it implies this is an account shaed by the two principles. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you.}} Please see guidelines on role accounts for more details StarM 19:15, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, celebrity or other well-known individual, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will probably not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

As the e-Editor for the American Institute for Conservation I am conversant with MediaWiki but am still learning the practices of wikipedia and believe that if my account page is unblocked that I can easily modify my username page to reflect more of my personal professional background as I do not intent to use my account or page as a promotion or spam device. The areas of wikipedia that interest me relate to my professional work in art conservation and therefore I believe that my chosen account name and user page should reflect my professional qualifications. The first contribution that I made to a wiki project page was professional and appropriate to the topic. I am requesting that my AMArtCons username be unblocked so I can edit the page as necessary and make productive contributions in the areas of my professional expertise. Thank you.

Decline reason:

Procedural decline. You don't have to use the {{unblock}} template for every message you write, but you will need to make a new request; in particular, you must choose another different username. If you are unblocked and your username changed, I suggest that you note your affiliation on your user page. In general though, your professional qualifications are not relevant to your editing per se; edits are evaluated based on how they conform to our policies, in particular our policy on references and verifying facts. In other words, if your edits are good, you don't have to worry about people not knowing that you're a professional in the field, if that's your concern re: changing names. Danger! High voltage! 04:11, 15 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

It seems that noting my affiliation on my userpage is what caused this entire problem to begin with. The few edits that I have made to date have all conformed to policy. If the account is my personal account I don't actually see how the username is different than others used on pages in my areas of interest e.g. User:Basilicofresco or, respectfully User:Danger ! I also wanted to add that I based the few sentences that I put into the user page on that of a colleague whose account is in good standing. It seems that the main difference was that he works at a public institution rather than a private company.

Here are a few key questions:

You are currently blocked because your username appears directly related to a company, group or product that you have been promoting, contrary to the username policy. Changing the username will not allow you to violate the 3 important principles above. Daniel Case (talk) 15:09, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please note also that a change of username will be required - your current username violates our username policy. Usernames must not contain references to a group or organization, but must instead represent only an individual. Hersfold non-admin(t/a/c) 17:01, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Yes I understand that wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a business directory. I use AMArtCons as my username when it relates to my professional interests in art conservation, not to promote the business but because I participate in a wikipedia entry on the topic of art conservation that they are able to see my professional qualifications and understand that I have the background and expertise to make those edits. I am not interested in participating in wikipedia to advance my business interest but to help advance understanding of our profession as a whole. I do understand that an encyclopedia article must be notable and have references and sources that document its validity. I would hope to keep this username as it the name I personally use for these interests and I believe that if I can update the Userpage it can reflect that is is me personally and not in violation of the policy

Decline reason:

In wikipedia it is essential that your username does not reflect your professional or other interests. It is absolutely essential that you seek a non-promotional username, using the template {{unblock-un}}, before any further discussion takes place. This is not negotiable. Your edits will be considered afer a new username is accepted and an unblock agreed on its basis.--Anthony Bradbury"talk" 22:10, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
