Questions for a story on Popular Mechanics[edit]

Hey Crispy1989,

I'm a writer for Popular Mechanics and I just wanted to reach out to ask you a couple of questions about ClueBot after seeing its info page get a whole bunch of attention on Reddit!

I'll try to be brief.

What got you interested in working on an algorithm that detects vandalism? Was that always the goal or was this project an outgrowth of something else?

As I understand it, the way ClueBot learns what is vandalism and what isn't is particularly dependent on the way humans make and reverse edits on Wikipedia. That said, do you think this sort of algorithm could be put to good use on other parts of the internet that aren't editable but have some sort of user feedback? Like on Reddit where there are upvotes and downvotes or Twitter where there are favorites and the ability to report posts?

What's the weirdest thing the algorithm has ever done?

What was the biggest challenge about developing it?

If there was one thing you'd want the public to know about this bot and the technology behind it, what would it be?

That, and I'd also be interested to hear anything and everything you YOU find particularly interesting about ClueBot!

You can just respond to me here, or email me at elimer@hearst.com if you'd rather. I hope I am using the talk page correctly; I'll confess I'm not much of a Wikipedian which is perhaps why this interests me!

Thanks!

Broken link on ClueBot_NG User page[edit]

On User:ClueBot_NG#Dataset_Review_Interface, the link to http://review.cluebot.cluenet.org/ (link label "dataset review interface.") results in a 404. Difficult for potential volunteers to get more info from a broken link.  ;) I tried several variations of the URL to no avail. Andrew S. (talk) 15:42, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering if a false positive of vandalism is resolved on the Englebert Humperdinck page view history? It shows up in view history with my username accused of doing that, all I did was add ISBN numbers, and I didn't change anything else. Pls advise as Cobi or Crispy are named on the Cluebot NG as controllers. Thank you Cydorsm (talk) 21:40, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

your bot[edit]

Clu bot has been going on a streak of reverting vandalism. It's going on a streak of 15 reverts before I could. Ur bot is making me very angry, pls turn it off (obviously joking, thank you for making the ultimate vandal fighter) layla, the remover 15:00, 18 November 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Layla, the remover (talkcontribs)

Hello, exist a problem in several articles and verbets of Wikipedia and Wiktionary in Portuguese, English and Spanish![edit]

Was be saying that comic strip, charge and cartoon are synonymous, when, in really, are different things!

Below, the explanations of that are the comic strips, charges and cartoons:

  • Comic strip: comics of short duration with the charts disposed and organized in form of a strip, how the proper name already implies. The comic strips may or may not be humoristic and contains strong critics for the social values. There are three types of comic strips: the daily strips, which are usually published in small quantities and in black and white because of the rhythm of publication (although there are still some in color), the Sunday boards, which are usually published in large quantities and always filling a page of a newspaper or magazine and in color (although there are still some in black and white) and the yonkomas, which are comic strips of Japanese origin and have four vertical vignettes. The term comes from the American English, comic strip and means comics ribbon.
  • Charge: humoristic comics of short duration and that contains strong critics of the people and things of the contemporaneity. The term comes from the Franco Belgian French, charger and means load or exagere.
  • Cartoon: humoristic comics of short duration and that contains strong critics of the daily to daily situations. Because of the similarities between the first animation short films and the cartoons printed and published in newspapers, magazines and books from the epoch, the animated drawing also is called of cartoon (or, unabbreviated, animated cartoon), be or not humoristic. The same thing happens in Italian and German, where they are called cartone animato and animierter Cartoon, respectively. The term comes from the British English, cartoon and this of the Italian, cartone and means large piece of paper, sketch, study, draft or anteproject.

Here they here the articles and verbets for be revised in the respective idioms: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tira_de_banda_desenhada, https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/charge, https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartoon, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_strip, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Editorial_cartoon, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartoon, https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tira_de_prensa, https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exageraci%C3%B3n_burlesca, https://pt.wiktionary.org/wiki/tira_cômica, https://pt.wiktionary.org/wiki/charge, https://pt.wiktionary.org/wiki/cartum, https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/comic_strip, https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/charge, https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cartoon, https://es.wiktionary.org/wiki/tira_cómica, https://es.wiktionary.org/wiki/charge and https://es.wiktionary.org/wiki/cartón!

Including and principally, the certain is that the Wikipedia articles (described soon above!) should receive the following names in each idiom: Tira de banda desenhada, Charge and Cartum (desenho humorístico) - in Portuguese, Comic strip, Charge (humoristic drawing) and Cartoon - in English and Tira de historieta, Charge (dibujo humorístico) and Cartón (dibujo humorístico) - in Spanish!

Remembering and highlighting that the caricature has nothing to do with the other three because isn't a form of comic: is, simply, a humoristic exaggerated drawing of something or someone, be real or not, does not even have texts!

And well, as you can see, the cartoon isn't a type of comic strip, neither the charge is a type of cartoon, if possible, please, warn to your fellow editors to make the changes, very thanks since now for all attention and interest and a hug!

Automated Debugging of CluebotNG[edit]

A few years ago, I created five different makefiles (including one to act as a central hub of sorts) that I used for automated debugging and logging. It was a good idea in practice ... except the college Linux server on which I wrote them did not allow me to create a second session (a requirement for the primary makefile hub to work properly). On that note, I am no longer at said college and I was not able to safely design instances of recursive make.

Don't let that discourage you: They don't need to be a complete makefile system to work properly.

Would something like this be useful to you? (I would prefer to send them by email --- and not using the WikiMail System)

I created working files for each of the following programs:
CPPCheck and Vangrind (All Modes)
nm (All Modes)
objectdump (Nearly All Modes)
readelf (Most Modes)

Hello[edit]

Hey, If I want to make a bot similar to Cluebot NG, but catches only the ones that Cluebot misses (because if you go to RC/Most likely bad faith and most likely bad edits, some of those aren't reverted by cluebot), how can I do that?

In other words, it should go to RC/Most likely bad faith and most likely bad edits, revert the edits, and leave a message on the users talkpage.

Can you help me with that?

I'm Caker18 ! I edit Wikipedia sparingly. (talk) 14:41, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Hi, is there anyway we can bring Cluebot NG into our Wikipedia? Our Wikipedia is Vietnamese Wikipedia. And right now it have been major vandalism and no one could revert all of that. We only have 1 active rollbacker for 2-3 hrs. phjtieudoc (Talk) 03:54, 1 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Phjtieudoc: These kind of bots are built with machine learning, so they need data to learn from. It would be possible to build such a bot, but we would first need a good dataset of edits classified as vandalism or not vandalism. Sam at Megaputer (talk) 06:47, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ClueBot False Positive?[edit]

Hello, I already reported (via form) what I believe was a false positive by ClueBot on December 31, 2020, but have received no response. I'm not sure if I should have been waiting for one.

I added the last season of a TV show to the list of episodes page-- Season 20, seen here at the bottom of the page in my edit:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_Closer_to_Truth_episodes&oldid=994836908

As you can see, Season 20 follows the same format as the previous seasons, including a lot of interwiki (?) links to the featured guests' pages. I couldn't figure out why it would be marked as possible vandalism except that it was my first Wikipedia edit, and I'm not sure if my account had been verified, so maybe that's it?

Here is the ClueBot notification-- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:LinaGS#December_2020

I am new to Wikipedia (obviously!) so not sure if what I need to do next is just remove that message and re-edit-- I know that's what it says in the message, but I was concerned that this would be a flag of some kind. Please let me know if possible. Otherwise I will go ahead and re-edit this week. Thanks, and apologies for my ignorance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by LinaGS (talkcontribs) 14:46, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
