The importance of a friendly greeting

Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request of Help on "Just the Facts" Tone[edit]

Hi Jim,

I am very new to Wikipedia. I got your feedback on the draft article located under PhoCoHaNoi. Thanks so much for your comments. I would greatly appreciate if you would spare some valuable time to highlight those parts from the draft that I need to pay close attentions to regarding the aspect that you raised. I know it would be a long shot to ask if you would even consider providing specific examples by directly editing them on the draft.

Lastly, I still do not know on how to submit the revision for review. I do not see any obvious buttons or pull-down menus from the Sandbox setting that would be able to allow to submit the article for review.

Thank you so much.

PhoCoHaNoi

Hello, PhoCoHaNoi. I am not going to edit the draft myself, because I want this to be a learning exercise for you. Here are a few examples of unacceptable wording:
  • "celebrating the 73-year history of outstanding men and women"
  • "pioneering contributions"
  • "sustained leadership and strategic vision"
  • "Exceptional services to innovation ecosystem"
  • "stimulating small business innovation, meeting the Air Force and DoD R&D needs, broadening participation in innovation and entrepreneurship, and boosting commercialization"
  • " So, as Dr. Pham looked back now, he brought systems-theoretic science and control engineering principles, together with teamwork and interdisciplinary to bear fruition in solving warfighter engineering problems, various areas of specific focus for increased activities in space control autonomy and space domain awareness."
It is not the job of a Wikipedia editor (you) to praise a person. Every trace of this non-neutral language must be removed. A Wikipedia article should never say "Person A is great!" Instead, it should say "Reliable source C reports that Expert B says that Person A is great", along with a reference to Reliable source C.
As for how to submit your draft, I will explain that when the draft complies with the neutral point of view. Cullen328 Let's discuss it

Sending Messages to Other Editors[edit]

Hi Jim. I will deeply appreciate anything that you can do to help. How can I find out about other editors and send them messages? I recently looked for an article about The Italian Coffee Company that I had read years ago. However, I could not find it. I believe that this article should be available. I am a new editor and I have a big learning curve ahead of me. Maybe you can post to my talk page. I am user Mojosa17. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday[edit]

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Admin's Barnstar
While I may disagree with one of your recent actions (slightly), I am also well aware negative feedback is the norm here, and nobody expresses gratitude for the many helpful and uncontroversial actions Wikipedians do (here, you). Hence, I want you to know that I am grateful for all the mostly thankless admin-and-other activities you do. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:23, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Piotrus, that is very kind of you, and I really appreciate it. I can assure you that if the other editor in question chooses to appeal their block, I will evaluate their appeal with an open mind. Cullen328 (talk) 02:41, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also want to say that I do not edit for positive feedback although it is always nice to get. I edit to improve the encyclopedia, and that is its own reward. Good faith, thoughtful feedback from respected editors like you makes me revisit my thinking and decisions, and I try to keep an open mind. The corollary is that negative feedback does not bother me very much. Negative feedback from trolls, vandals and POV pushers just makes me laugh briefly. I do take the occasional threat of violence seriously, though. Cullen328 (talk) 02:56, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As someone who had to face all of those - yes, including the latter - let's hope for more of the positive feedback. Nobody edits Wikipedia for it - we would starve to death - but I believe lack of "wikilove" or such is an enduring problem in our community that reduces our retention rate for editors. (I even wrote an academic paper on that few years ago [1]). Anyway, keep up the good job :) Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:23, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Barnstar of Diplomacy
In general for your particular brand of diplomatic straight talk, but specifically for The "deez" remark is an obvious reference to "deez nuts" memes which derive from the lyrics of a 30 year old Dr. Dre gangsta rap song that discusses a woman's facial contact with testicles while performing fellatio. It is an inappropriate allusion to use while interacting with another editor, which is such champion wikivoice I feel it ought to be framed. asilvering (talk) 18:34, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I shared this exchange with a non-wikipedian friend as an example of wikipedia's "polite but direct" communication ideals, and she wants to know how you'd explain that glomping is unacceptable behaviour, if you'll indulge us. -- asilvering (talk) 18:38, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Asilvering, frankly, I had never heard the word "glomping" but was immediately reminded of "glamping", which is a portmanteau of "glamorous camping". It refers to people who willingly spend $300.00 per night to sleep in a fancy yurt or tipi. So, Google informed me that "glomping" is a term for sudden violent hugging. Well, violence is bad. Then, I checked Urban Dictionary which is not a reliable source but is often informative on such matters. I know almost nothing about anime and manga. There is a secondary definition of Living in an RV while on someone else’s property, using their space and/or resources for free. (A hybrid of ‘glamping’ and ‘glomming’.) So, the circle has closed and our vocabulary lesson is complete. "Hybrid" in this context appears to be a synonym of "portmanteau". Cullen328 (talk) 19:03, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I shall never again read the word "glomping" without associating it with the modern version of a party at Le hameau de la Reine. Though, with luck, I will never again read the word "glomping". -- asilvering (talk) 19:45, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Persistent editor on Damsel (2024 film)[edit]

Hello again!

Mike and I were editing on the same article as shown on the topic title - a film, to simplify things. Then there’s this user who thinks their ‘special review’ should stay there because it’s ‘reputable’. To me and Mike? It wasn’t. It was a Wix website, are they kidding us for this?

If there’s anything me or Mike can do, tell either of us either on my talk page or his talk page. But if it’s something you should do, please go ahead. Thanks again!

I apologise in advance if my tone seems to be a bit rushing or a bit demanding. Perhaps it’s just me being a bit too full of myself too.

What to do about IP that keeps adding Islamic honourifics[edit]

Hi, I'm QwertyForest! I have noticed that 80.5.35.232 has been repeatedly adding Islamic honourifics to the article Judgement Day in Islam. Their edits have been reverted a total of 4 times in the space of a hour, twice by me, and they have 3 warnings on their talk page, yet they have added them in again. Considering the situation, is dispute resolution or AN/I more appropriate? QwertyForest (talk) 16:02, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Remember that Wix site self-promoter?[edit]

He’s back with a vengeance.

To put things short, he’s been warned twice (last I remember he is straight to level three on two separate infractions. Now, it looks like his ego caught up to him, stating that his, quote ‘awful website’ has ‘five thousand readers,’ more so than the reviewers we ‘think are more revered and valuable.’ And then that self-promoter goes to attack Mike by calling him ‘elitist,’ which is funny because you were the one who warned him first, and must have ignored it. And then that editor stated that Mike had ‘the deciding point of view?’ Haha!

You’ll see below that one-sided circus (referring to the self-promoter) that I have my own response to the situation. Dare I say that it won’t end well for that editor?

In this crazy world, I do… I just want [in this case], an end to this…

Hi, I think it would be better to specify that the dish in Italy (of course not the American version with the chicken inside, etc.) is called "pasta al burro", and of course to not confuse people I would avoid writing it in the first lines; also because in the sentence "In Italy, meanwhile, fettuccine al burro is generally considered home cooking." the page refers to pasta al burro without explaining anything. JacktheBrown (talk) 11:58, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have added new information, decide what to do with what I have added, but please don't delete everything; it's necessary to specify that in Italy it has another name, and that Italy follows the original recipe and not the US one. JacktheBrown (talk) 12:19, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Solved. JacktheBrown (talk) 17:17, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The deep flaw in your thinking here, JackkBrown, is that there is no single "US recipe" for Fettucine Alfredo or any other Italian-American dish, or any dish in any other cuisine. American home cooks and American restaurant chefs are perfectly free to follow the most traditional Italian recipe if they want, using pasta imported from Italy, using the highest quality imported Parmigiano Reggiano, and even use butter imported from Italy, which costs roughly three times what American butter costs. They are also perfectly free to make the dish using the cheapest mass produced American pasta, Kraft brand parmesan, and the lowest priced American butter. They are also free to add some American cream or what we call "half and half". They are also free to top the dish with an optional piece of grilled chicken breast if they want. There is no official recipe. Those are free choices that free people make, and all variations of the dish are actually Italian-American Fettucine Alfredo, despite what you individually feel about the matter. We go by what reliable sources say, not by the idiosyncratic opinions of anonymous editors who hate Italian-American cuisine. Hundreds of millions of Americans love Italian-American cuisine, and very, very few of them care in the slightest what Italian culinary snobs think about the Italian-American dishes that they love. In addition, Americans would not think about criticizing how Italians choose to prepare hamburgers, hot dogs or barbecue. Why are some Italians so vehement about criticizing Italian-American cuisine, which is incredibly varied? Those who do not like it are free to not eat it. It seems you are immature and like fart sounds (flatulence article). Funk~svwiki (talk) 07:56, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) What's wrong with that? Bishonen | tålk 09:18, 20 April 2024 (UTC).[reply]
Well, if that article has to have a sound example (as if the reader had never heard a fart), it should not be that strange sound file. It doesn't sound real. Funk~svwiki (talk) 10:45, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, I do not particularly like fart sounds, Funk~svwiki, but I do like comprehensive encyclopedia articles. Please refrain from unwarranted personal attacks on other editors. Cullen328 (talk) 17:10, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, then we should have sound examples in all articles.
Sounds of people eating, picking their noses and masturbating.
Even the sounds of a rape could be a good addition. Funk~svwiki (talk) 05:07, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you are going to troll me, Funk~svwiki, I will be happy to block you. Stop now. If you want to be a troll, then choose another website where that type of low-life behavior is permitted. It isn't allowed on Wikipedia. Cullen328 (talk) 05:21, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please check into things before commenting from [2] was received as dismissive.

From my point of view, I was commenting on bullying in that thread, and to be told that I should not comment over a technicality was received as dismissive. Are there arbiters of comments on ANI?

ANI threads are not private, and I have every right to share my concern over unhealthy behavior. If one wants to be constructive , they can acknowledge the point being made. Tonymetz 💬 00:20, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tonymetz, you and I see the Chris troutman matter differently, and I am not going to try to persuade you to accept my view of troutman. As for your specific question Are there arbiters of comments on ANI?, that would be consensus of editors, action by administrators, and intervention by the Arbitration Committee. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cullen328 (talk) 00:32, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I regret that I hurt your feelings. That was not at all my intention. Cullen328 (talk) 00:35, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for hearing me out. Tonymetz 💬 01:23, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Tonymetz, you are welcome, and I am grateful that we can discuss this disagreement respectfully. I have paid attention to what you have said. Cullen328 (talk) 01:34, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
fwiw i didn't disagree with you on the outcome of the ANI. Tonymetz 💬 18:19, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

An editor is making the claim an "interim consensus" has been reached in a discussion. I have never heard of an "interim consensus", I think I know the answer, but is this just made up? or have I missed something?

Hope you're well,  // Timothy :: talk  07:13, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, TimothyBlue. Good to hear from you. The term "interim consensus" is new to me, but I think I may have heard "working consensus" a few times. My view is that if a convincing consensus recognized by all experienced good faith editors has not been established, then weaker "quasi-consensus" arguments should carry very little weight. I see that the editor making that argument is blocked. Do you need any help from me at this time? Cullen328 (talk) 07:34, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As for being well, I am slowly recovering from some unpleasant respiratory virus or "bug" that is not COVID-19 but makes me want to stay in bed feeling sorry for myself. No big deal, and many people are wrestling with far worse health issues. Cullen328 (talk) 07:40, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you've had a chance to enjoy some wildflowers, the hills north of LA are beautiful.  // Timothy :: talk  07:45, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
TimothyBlue, I actually saw extensive fields of bluebonnets for the first time in Texas during my 17 day road trip to Dallas to observe the total eclipse of the sun on April 8. Upon returning to Northern California, I started seeing the Golden Poppies that are the official floral symbol of my home state. I saw some great beauty in Southern California in the first couple of days of my trip, especially the dramatic snow-capped mountains near San Bernardino. Really spectacular scenery heading south to that city. Cullen328 (talk) 08:13, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Martin Olav Sabo[edit]

The Mpls downtown post office a 1930s art deco building has been renamed in his honor, would like to add this info to Honorable Sabo’s info MplsProud (talk) 13:14, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, MplsProud. This is usually done by adding a "Legacy" section. You will also need to add a reference to a reliable source that verifies the renaming. Cullen328 (talk) 17:45, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shall we name OJ as the killer of Goldman and Brown?[edit]

I have raised the discussion as to whether how we should reflect's Simpson's culpability for the "crime of the century", much like LHO is named "guilty". Discussions open here. 92.17.198.220 (talk) 21:24, 24 April 2024 (UTC) The talk section is "How should we treat Simpson's “culpability” in the murders; neutral or adamant?" 92.17.198.220 (talk) 21:33, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) We post sourced information, he wasn't convicted, you want to invent a resolution? - FlightTime (open channel) 21:33, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I support Muboshgu's formulation, which is that he was found not guilty in a criminal trial and liable in a civil trial. The situation is not analogous to Oswald, who was killed long before he could be tried, much like John Wilkes Booth. Cullen328 (talk) 21:48, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As for the "crime of the century", that would be the Holocaust, in my view. Cullen328 (talk) 21:50, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
