Running MediaWiki on your own computer

MediaWiki is the software that runs Wikipedia.

MediaWiki is opensource and is available for download for free. You can use it for offline access to the Wikipedia database, or to set up a wiki of your own.

However, MediaWiki requires other software to be able to run. The prerequisite programs are Apache/IIS, MySQL4 or later (5 or later as of version 1.19) and PHP5. When bundled together, these are referred to as AMP. They are also open source and free.

The Manual Installation Guide explains how to install MediaWiki from scratch.

Note that some users may find MediaWiki software bundles and MediaWiki hosting services with 1-click installation and wiki farms to be convenient alternatives to manual installation.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Spells in Harry Potter, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for Deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discusion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Is it okay to put a hoax in a sandbox?[edit]

I am wanting to know if it is okay to put a hoax in your personal sandbox. (P.S: Can somebody explain why I cannot post a message in the Wikipedia Teahouse? The button from which you post a message is all grey?) Fcbbminiestadi (talk) 14:20, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The answer to your first question is no - sandboxes and other user subpages exist to help you improve the encylopedia, and are not "yours", so to speak. Whist some leeway is permitted, especially on user pages, creating a sandbox hoax will do nothing but earn you a deleted sandbox and a warning.
Not sure why you'd be seeing a greyed-out "Ask a question" button at the Teahouse (does your browser block popups, by any chance?), but you can edit it like any other page; click on the Edit tab at the top and scroll down to the appropriate section. Yunshui  14:47, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:Logo (Kidswiki).png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused personal file. Out of scope.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 08:06, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
