Monobook[edit]

You may wish to make use of a 'Dates' tab in edit mode that will help with unlinking unnecessary date links. Simply copy the entire contents of User:Bobblewik/monobook.js to your own monobook. Then follow the instructions in your monobook to clear the cache (i.e. press Ctrl-Shift-R in Firefox, or Ctrl-F5 in IE) before it will work. It also provides a 'Units' tab. If you know what you are doing, you can copy and modify the subfiles as you wish. I just thought you might be interested. Regards. bobblewik 20:03, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The reason it fails is because you refer to User:Hmains/monobook.js/dates.js and User:Hmains/monobook.js/unitformatter.js and these articles do not exist. You have two options:
Try again. I am happy to walk you through the process. So feel free to ask me again. bobblewik 12:03, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer Right Granted[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. The Helpful One 17:59, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatroller[edit]

Hi Hmains, just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled right to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature should have little to no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the patroller right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! — ξxplicit 21:36, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[[:MOS:BLOCKQUOTE]]

[[:MOS:CURLY]]

^ Typographical, or curly, quotation marks and apostrophes might be read more efficiently, and many think they look better. However, for practical reasons the straight versions are used on the English Wikipedia:

Consistency keeps searches predictable. Though most browsers do not distinguish between curly and straight marks, Internet Explorer still does (as of 2016), so that a search for Alzheimer's disease will fail to find Alzheimer’s disease and vice versa.

Straight quotation marks are easier to type reliably on most platforms.

MediaWiki's use of series of single quotes to create italics and boldface makes using these features complicated and error-prone for content that begins or ends with apostrophes.

Linking Dates (centuries, decades, years, months, days, etc)[edit]

Delink dates per WP:DATELINK, WP:YEARLINK and MOS:UNLINKYEARS

As always, the content of the linked-to article must provide substantive content to the linked-from article. The MOS decided most dates do not do this. Hmains (talk) 03:36, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

avoiding delinks[edit]

21 April 2024 can be used to avoid future delinking of dates. For example, 2012 → 2012 2010s → 2010s 21st century → 21st century Friday → Friday June → June (l, ldmy or lmdy also work) June 2012 → June 2012 (l, ldmy or lmdy also work) 29 June → 29 June (l or ldmy also work) June 29 → June 29 (lmdy also works) 29 June 2012 → 29 June 2012 June 29, 2012 → June 29, 2012 29 June 2012 → 29 June 2012 (l also works) June 29, 2012 → June 29, 2012

Web page has expired[edit]

I follow the directions in the message shown on the screen.

"Click on the Refresh button on the toolbar to reload the page. After refreshing, you might need to navigate to the specific webpage again, or re-enter information."

On my computer I have to remember that "refresh" looks like a circle with an arrow at the top, and it's the fourth of five icons to the right of the URL. I don't even know what the others are. Then a box pops up and I have to click on "retry".— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 21:04, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship[edit]

Since you are very active in the project, would you like to be an administrator? Do you need tools to move/delete pages for example? Are you active in WP space, involved in xFDs or something similar? -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:03, 23 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second Magioladitis here. I think you'd do fantastic as an administrator. The choice is entirely yours, but just know that should you ever submit an RfA, you'll have my support. Kurtis (talk) 03:53, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks to you both, but I think I would lose interest in WP doing admin things. Hmains (talk) 03:56, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Understandable. Do whatever you feel comfortable doing, it's not my place to pressure you.
But in the off chance that you ever change your mind, know that I would feel confident in entrusting you with the tools. =) Kurtis (talk) 04:05, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Delinking[edit]

  • The delinking of dates was exhaustively discussed by WP prior to the current wording of WP:DATELINK and WP:YEARLINK and MOS:UNLINKDATES being agreed upon. Days, months, years, decades, centuries, etc were all included in the long discussion.

Thanks for the fix. It is now working fine. Is this something something I should have noticed/fixed myself? Hmains (talk) 18:47, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe, but it's pretty obscure. The value of |name= needs to match the name of the template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:55, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

concrete bridges categorization[edit]

Hi Hmains, you still do categorization of articles using Hotcat or other tools, right? Perhaps you could help with Category:Concrete bridges in the United States. It was striking to me today that this category has many individual members, and few state-level subcategories in Category:Concrete bridges in the United States by state (there were just 5 or 6). I just created a few more state-level subcategories and started doing some sorting of the individual members into them. With your tools, I wonder if you could please continue this out? Probably all or most of the 50 U.S. states should have categories, and I know there are some Puerto Rico examples in there too. (Maybe also splitting out Category:Girder bridges in the United States, too? But it is smaller.) Either way, doing this or not, i'm glad you're contributing in Wikipedia. cheers, --Doncram (talk, contribs) 14:50, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, i see it is more complicated if one makes connections over to Commons categories, too, as pre-existing state-level ones did. There are 17 state-level categories there in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Concrete_bridges_in_the_United_States_by_state. I dunno if more should be created there. This is getting beyond what i can do.... --Doncram (talk, contribs) 15:05, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is no magic to what I do with categories. Regardless of tool, one has to read each article/category and determine what to do with it. It is just a matter of the time involved to do so. Thanks. Hmains (talk) 20:11, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"allincluded" on US shootings cat[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if there is any reason why you added Template:Allincluded to Category:Mass shootings in the United States as seen in this diff. I cant think of any reason why that category shouldn't be a container category, especially not all included. This same topic was put on the talk page in 2019, but no reason was given. Thanks, greyzxq talk 23:46, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The reason was and is that this aids in navigation for reader and allows them to rapidly see the whole situation here. Having all the mass shooting in the US in one location means that readers can come here and find/see every article on the subject. Otherwise, they have to wade through multiple levels of subcats to look at the articles in each location or other subcat. No benefit accrues in forcing readers to have to do that. And there is no list what includes all such shootings; having such a list would be difficult to keep up to date, especially since such mass shooting have become something of a cottage industry in the US: is it now multiple times per day? Thanks. Hmains (talk) 00:01, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
