Do you want all of your edits to this page to make their way over to Alfa Romeo Tipo 103? There's a way to merge the histories with these types of projects. I don't know that it is necessarily required in this situation since you were the only person contributing to the userspace draft. But I thought I'd offer your the option. Lotus Esprit[edit]

Nice work.  Mr.choppers | ✎  19:56, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback Mr.choppers. I've seen your work on many of the pages I've visited and can say the same about you. Kumboloi (talk) 21:25, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Aw, thanks! Just saw Ligier JS2, nice to finally have an article for this lovely and mostly forgotten vehicle.
I hope you don't mind my pointing something out that took a while for me to realize: hp/bhp in Wikipedia refers to non-metric horsepower, which equals 746 watts. A metric horsepower, as used in the civilized world (that is, outside of UK and USA), is 735 watts. So, to express the horsepower as used by a metric car manufacturer you have to call it "PS" or "CV" (!) in Wikipedia. Here are some nifty conversion templates, copy and paste as you see fit:
{{convert|190|PS|kW|0|abbr=on}} reads: 190 PS (140 kW)
but {{convert|190|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} reads: 190 hp (142 kW)
or: {{convert|190|PS|kW|0}} reads: 190 metric horsepower (140 kW)
to show the differences between hp/PS: {{convert|140|kW|PS hp|0|abbr=on}} reads: 140 kW (190 PS; 188 hp)
It's very confusing, but once I realized that a metric horsepower is 1.5% less, a lot of things that had made no sense before became clear. And what may happen is that you write "190bhp" in an article, and then some other editor will apply the conversion template and all of a sudden the JS2 seems to have 142 kW which is actually 193 cv. I see that you figured out how to use the citation templates, so this should be pretty easy. I have a so-so list of templates useful to automobile articles, feel free to use that to save time. Cheers, see you around,  Mr.choppers | ✎  04:05, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the extra detail Mr.choppers. I had assumed that "hp" on Wikipedia meant mechanical horsepower. I found a nice explanation from another user (Charles01, I think) that laid it out. I plan to go back through the Esprit article and standardize the way engine power output is reported, leading with the metric standard again (kW).
Cool. As for the Lotus, note that the original output used by the manufacturer should be used - this can be assumed to be imperial horsepower in the case of the Esprit, CV for the Ligier, and kW for more recent European or Australian cars. Best,  Mr.choppers | ✎  04:26, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Mr.choppers. I haven't checked yet but was wondering if this kind of detail is covered in the Manual of Style, or if there is an equivalent guide for automotive articles.
PS: Saw the article on the Ligier JS4. Nicely put together.Kumboloi (talk) 13:24, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There is this page, it doesn't cover the entire subject but it's a good basis. If you think the text should be altered (I think it ought to be fleshed out, and to include the possibility of metric hp as the base unit). There are, for instance, any number of 100cv cars which have the problem of becoming either 99 or 101cv cars when kW leads. As for the JS4, I found a source while reading something else and with Ligier fresh in my mind and figured I couldn't pass.... I welcome more sources, especially on the later iterations. Was there a JS10 voiturette or was that only an F1 car?  Mr.choppers | ✎  02:15, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That looks like a good resource. Thanks for pointing it out Mr.choppers. As for the Ligiers, I am not at all familiar with their voiturette line. Happy hunting.

Veedub[edit]

Thanks for your additions to Volkswagen Country Buggy - one note, though (from the Automobile Project infobox page): "The displacement should be written in liters (L) or cubic centimeters (cc) unless the engine was originally engineered, designated, and marketed in cubic inches." Cubic inches are pretty much never used outside of the US; we often include them in the body of the article but it makes the infoboxes unnecessarily cluttered. A tag has been placed on Alfredo Momo requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. I inadvertently created this page in Article space prematurely. Thanks for flagging it Comatmebro. I see that another admin has moved it to Draft space. I will request that the draft also be deleted.

Alfredo Momo moved to draftspace[edit]

An article you recently created, Alfredo Momo, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Shirt58 (talk) 09:18, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Shirt58, thank you for moving the nascent Alfredo Momo page to Draft space. I mistakenly created it in article space — finger trouble on my end. I have requested that the draft be deleted; I usually work on articles in my sandbox.

Brazilians[edit]

Thanks for all your work fixing up Brazilian car pages - there is a lot of content, but so much of it needs copy editing as it was imperfectly translated from Portuguese. Best,  Mr.choppers | ✎  12:46, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi  Mr.choppers | ✎ , thanks for that. This all started when I saw a Volkswagen SP2 at a local car show. I went to the Wikipedia page for more info (as we do), and thought the page could use some work. Then I started looking at some of the linked pages with Brazilian content, and noticed that there were a lot of them, and they were all in the same shape! It looks like a bigger job than I want to take on right now — I'm just trying to make a few of them easier to read, without making major changes to the content. Thanks again.Kumboloi (talk) 17:10, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I always wonder if the best thing is to do a glancing, quick fix or to do one paragraph in depth.  Mr.choppers | ✎  22:03, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think both approaches are valid, but I find it's hard to do one paragraph in depth without winding up doing the whole article. I try to remember that not all edits have to be major revisions.Kumboloi (talk) 02:47, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Saw your work at Ford CHT engine and I imagine you were peeved when the conversion template gave you horsepower figures that differed somewhat from the source. The problem is that there are two kinds of horsepower: the customary unit (based on pounds and kings' arms) and the customary metric unit (a close estimate of the customary hp, using meters and kilograms). 99% of the time, when a non-English speaking country writes horsepower (or whatever the local word is), they are referring to metric hp. Since they are so close, within 1.3% IIRC, it is often hard to tell and most sources are wholly unaware that there is any possible distinction. Officially, SI supplanted metric hp but it remains in use globally.
This is further complicated by the fact that WP usually abbreviates metric hp "PS", using the German abbreviation since that is where most anglos encounter metric hp, and since that is the abbreviation used in Japan and Korea. Those English-speaking countries that went fully metric (Aus, NZ, ZA) skipped metric hp entirely, while the US is still stuck in the 1500s. Because of this, there is no official and universally accepted way to denote metric horsepower. In the UK, importers use "hp" or "bhp" but you can never quite tell which unit is actually used. Delightfully confusing. Brazilian figures are typically metric, but sometimes American mother companies' habits filter through, although not in the case of the CHT. Best,  Mr.choppers | ✎  03:08, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi  Mr.choppers | ✎ , thanks for the reminder. You've tried to educate me on this before, but I obviously need to spend some additional time on it. I try to use the figures from the source where they are known. There are definitely many ways to express it, and I am not convinced that all of the sources are consistent themselves. When I was editing the VW SP2 article, the number of different ways that engine power was quoted was dismaying. I have seen hp, bhp, PS, CV, SAE hp, DIN hp, and kW. In the CHT article, if the conversions I've chosen have introduced errors, please let me know. Thanks again.Kumboloi (talk) 03:22, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the ones in CHT. Please don't think I was criticizing; it was meant more as commiseration. Best,  Mr.choppers | ✎  03:35, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
