Question from MelanieAntoinetteEdwards (15:03, 1 January 2024)[edit]

Hello. Just been assigned to you after I made several minor edits. At some points I want to create a page dedicated to my paternal uncle Gordon John Edwards (musician) who passed away in 2003. Looks like a big job and was wondering if there is a template people use to start with to edit with information on Gordon, or does one literally start from a blank page? Thank you. --MelanieAntoinetteEdwards (talk) 15:03, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Start with a blank page. Gather your sources. Don't including things that don't have sources. (No fond memories.) BTW, it would be better if someone without a personal connection wrote the article. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.

Question from Finanorak (02:29, 7 January 2024)[edit]

Hi, I’m not really a consummate wikipedia expert but I noticed there isn’t a page on financial protective indexes. It’s a more arcane investment management term and I was wondering if I could make a new page at least describing what they are. I’m not really sure all the requirements or different things I have to add. Any advice would be appreciated. --Finanorak (talk) 02:29, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can start that article at any time. Gather your sources and have at it. Everything in the article needs to be backed by a reliable source (not your own expertise). The WP:Article wizard can help you get started.

Extant tags at "Moral economy"[edit]

Hello. You seem to have been doing a fair bit of copy editing at Moral economy. You've removed the main "Repetition" template, but three inline templates still exist and the article still shows at Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit from March 2022. If you're done, then they should go. Dhtwiki (talk) 09:42, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing. I have not completed the first pass. Another will be required to fix the organization. It's a process. On it. Lfstevens (talk) 19:25, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I now see that the category has been emptied. That takes care of all the small-number months I had to add up when updating the drive progress table. So, thank you (and whoever else took care of those pages). Dhtwiki (talk) 06:50, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know where they came from, but Moral economy is my 3rd. Lfstevens (talk) 15:54, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Self-driving Cars[edit]

Hi @Lfstevens, I've seen that you've made past edits to the Self-driving car page and would like to suggest a change to the definitions section of the page. Note - I'm employee of Mobileye and have declared my COI.

As mentioned in the "Criticism of SAE" section, the SAE levels are too focused on technologies and are not easily understood for the end consumer. We are now seeing the terminology of hands-on/eyes-off being used across the industry by automakers and news websites, replacing these SAE levels.

Here are some examples: https://www.gm.com/commitments/av-safe-deployment https://www.ford.com/technology/bluecruise/ https://www.valeo.com/en/level-2-autonomous-driving-eyes-on-hands-off/ https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/08/mercedes-first-to-sell-vehicles-in-california-with-hands-free-eyes-off-automated-driving/ https://electrek.co/2023/09/27/hands-off-with-the-first-true-hands-free-car-in-the-us-and-its-not-tesla/

The source of the this new taxonomy is Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua: https://www.autonews.com/mobility-report/mobileye-ceo-seeks-alternative-sae-autonomy-levels Original article: https://www.mobileye.com/opinion/defining-a-new-taxonomy-for-consumer-autonomous-vehicles/

If this is acceptable, I'd be happy to propose updated content for the new taxonomy. If not, I would love to hear your thoughts. Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 14:02, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would be happy to look at this, but am booked until 2/1. The content should come from me. Please feel free to point good sources out. Lfstevens (talk) 03:24, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Sure, these are the best sources:

The other sources I provided in my first comment can help provide a little more context around the topic. Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 08:39, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Started on this. Lfstevens (talk) 04:10, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- Shrank the article by ~25%, getting rid of lots of obsolete stuff and general cruft

- Updated/expanded a few things.

- I have a draft of some text, but I haven't figured out where it goes. Hmmm.

- Also, I don't understand this paragraph in the original proposal:

The result of our requirement for no reproducible errors is that the system ODD should be much larger than the customer ODD. In other words, it is possible to limit the ODD to the customer to not allow lane changes in a regular mode of operations, but still, the system needs to be able to change lanes in an emergency maneuver.

Is it saying that the customer would not be able to change lanes manually, or that the system would not change lanes except in an emergency? @Gideon at Mobileye:

Thanks. It means that the system would only change lanes in an emergency.
The system must have the ability to change lanes for these emergency scenarios, regardless of whether changing lanes is a feature that the customer has access to. Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 14:48, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So the customer cannot request a lane change (with the turn signal stick)? Or is it that the system would change lanes on its own only in an emergency? Sorry to be so dense. @Gideon at Mobileye: Lfstevens (talk) 18:17, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The system would change lanes on its own in an emergency. Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 18:54, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's in there. Feedback encouraged! Lfstevens (talk) 19:47, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding @Lfstevens. I have a few comments:
1) Having all the ADS definitions in addition to the classifications is still quite confusing. The ADAS industry is expanding to include more autonomous capabilities which will ultimately end with a self-driving car. It started with automatic emergency breaking, lane keeping assist and has evolved from there to include more scenarios and features with more autonomy like navigate-on-pilot. ADAS is a spectrum which on one end has base features as listed here Advanced driver-assistance system and on the other hand is full self-driving.
I would suggest rewriting these definitions to make it clear. Let me know if you would like me to provide a first draft.
2) I would remove the paragraph about Operation Driving Domain from the Mobileye section or move it earlier on the page. ODD is an important topic to explain but it isn't specific to Mobileye's taxonomy - it also works with the SAE levels and all other definitions provided above. Often the differences between all the ADS definitions on the page can be understood by looking at autonomous driving in different ODDs.
3) The criticism of the SAE level paragraph is still under the Mobileye taxonomy. I would suggest moving to the end of the SAE classification section.
4) To help readers visualize the taxonomy, I would add the image from the blog: https://static.mobileye.com/website/us/corporate/images/84fb9e3a75b5cc9da909240510812dc9_1675683237023.png Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 09:51, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is the image in the public domain? Otherwise it's a nogo for WP. Lfstevens (talk) 18:04, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1 Are you recommending dropping the high-level defs (except for SAE) in favor of describing individual features?
2 ODD - switched to an excerpt from Operational design domain. Edited that article accordingly.
3 Done
4 Public domain? Lfstevens (talk) 20:42, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1) Not quite. I recommend keeping both classifications and leaving the individual features for the ADAS page (which is done really well).
Instead I would write a short paragraph about how ADAS is transitioning into self-driving. The paragraph 'Delivering higher levels of automation' in this McKinsey report is very helpful: https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/automotive-and-assembly/our-insights/autonomous-drivings-future-convenient-and-connected
2) This is great, although probably more relevant in the Technology section
3) Awesome

Thanks @Lfstevens for making the changes.
Something else that could add value to the page is some information about the leading companies in the field that could be placed at the end of the History section.
Guidehouse has a report with a leaderboard of the top Automated Driving Systems companies and ABI Research also has a report about the top Autonomous Vehicle Companies
https://guidehouseinsights.com/reports/guidehouse-insights-leaderboard-automated-driving-systems https://www.abiresearch.com/blogs/2023/03/09/top-autonomous-vehicle-companies/ Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 18:22, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Artastic221 (15:28, 14 February 2024)[edit]

Hi, Lfstevens!

First, thank you so much for taking the time out of your existence to make the internet a better place. I have long admired and wondered about the volunteer collective behind the many Wikipedia articles I have accessed. I'm thrilled to be joining this community and hope I can contribute something in my time working with you all.

Second, my actual inquiry. What kind of pages would you recommend editing and how many would you recommend a novice like myself start out with? I came to this site to create an article on a local author doing important work in my surrounding community, but the site recommends I do some edits first. Any advice on where to start would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for being a mentor. I really appreciate it! --Artastic221 (talk) 15:28, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like you're interested in your local community. If so, pick an article about that and work on it. Otherwise, pick something that you have reasonable knowledge about and go there. As always, find reliable sources for anything you add. Good editing! Lfstevens (talk) 16:28, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Latviawikiman (10:58, 21 February 2024)[edit]

Latvia is a small country and it is heavily underrepresented in Wikipedia, especially when it comes to niche sports such as eSports. Is it ok for me to start new pages that I believe are noteworthy and should be listed on Wikipedia? Or should I do it slowly, limiting the number of pages/contributions per day? --Latviawikiman (talk) 10:58, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is definitely ok. The two things to think about are
- Notability - the subject of the article has to qualify according to Wikipedia:Notability
- Sources - each claim in the article has to be backed by a reliable source, according to Wikipedia:Reliable sources
It probably makes sense to start with a single article. Then wait until it gets reviewed. The reviewer may give some feedback about what (if anything) needs more work. The Article wizard can help you get started. Have fun! Lfstevens (talk) 20:14, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to join New pages patrol[edit]

Hello Lfstevens!

Question from Lostangus (21:07, 6 March 2024)[edit]

Hello Mentor! I've been called out on my first edit for lack of citations, contradictory content, and one irrelevant comment. All noted and understood. However, I am attempting to edit a page for which there is little accurate information but for which I have firsthand knowledge. I have published no journal articles or authored any books as of yet, so I have no source to cite. This is a difficult endeavor as citations already listed for this page have inaccuracies themselves. Any advice? Thanks. --Lostangus (talk) 21:07, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Every statement in WP must be supported by a WP:RS. Of course, this rule is not always enforced. First-hand knowledge doesn't cut it, nor does writing about things that you are personally involved with. No surprise that the criticisms are flawed (sorry about that). So the advice is to hold off until you find reliable, independent, sources. Good luck and thanks for working to make WP better. Lfstevens (talk) 21:14, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
