Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Ole Einar Bjørndalen, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Oberhof. References are mostly dead links[edit]

I am a new page controller and have found that the majority of the references in 1978–79 Biathlon World Cup article are dead links. In addition, you have too many wiki links that lead to nonexistent articles. I would suspect that the names contained in these wiki links would be considered not notable. Please correct the references that are dead links. I believe your article has the potential of providing important information for people who are looking for materials on the subject. Thank you for creating the article and I hope to see it being improved over time.

"Former" / overlinking[edit]

Why do you keep reverting my edits to read "[name] is a former [nationality] [profession]"? It makes no sense whatsoever, and is poor English. How is someone a "former Finnish" anything? A person is first Finnish (or any nationality), then a profession. So a "Finnish former [profession]". Seriously—check your English amongst the hundreds of edits you make. Also, please read WP:OVERLINK regarding linking country names, particularly where it says not to link "the names of major geographic features and locations, languages, and religions". Mac Dreamstate (talk) 21:12, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please, your tone.
Also, I too was uncertain that anyone could be a 'former [nationality]', with the exception of former Soviet athletes and the likes, however, as most sports articles used that structure when I started editing, I simply followed their lead. I agree that '[nationality] former [profession]' is a more prudent and correct choice and if the consensus is that we should start articles that way, I am all for it. Hopefully, this is not just a "lone wolf project", as those are generally not a good idea.
As for overlinking, if there is any particular case you were thinking of, I would gladly look it over. Generally, however, I can say that a link to a country, for example, does not appear too often in my articles and edits; I am certain you understand that I cannot speak for those articles I have not fully written myself. If you are referring to the flag links, I would contend that they fall in under the exceptions of WP:OVERLINK: i.e. infoboxes and tables. The reason the flags in the tables link to their respective countries is simply because not everybody knows every flag, and thus helps the reader. Linking to them all is a lot neater and makes editing a lot simpler, as not every athlete participates in every championship. Additionally, double links of countries only happens in rare cases when an athlete has been active for so long that the same country holds the championships again.
Again, if you notice any particular problem with overlinking in my articles or edits, or any linguistic issue, please feel free to pass them on to me.
Alexander Bonaparte Caesar (talk) 02:30, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response, and apologies for the tone. Due to the lack of edit summaries, I wasn't sure to garner a response.
A "lone wolf project" it may or not be, but I'm going by two things: first is obviously the English aspect, which I've already explained. I've heard no argument for the use of "former [nationality] [profession]", although I would love to hear it if there is one; only once (amongst thousands of edits) has an editor outright disagreed, so as compromise we simply reworded the lead to avoid either one, after which I went on my way. Second is going by search results, using a Google string: "site:wikipedia.org "is a former [nationality]"". I've tried a few nationalities, with "[nationality] former [profession]" coming up much more in most cases (Americans in particular seem to like "former [nationality]", but that's not to say it's correct practice that can't be challenged). I am tempted to take it to a talk page for consensus, so that other editors won't think of it as an agenda to "have my way" on WP, but I wouldn't have the faintest idea of where to start. Until a major challenge arises, I'll keep correcting it wherever I see it.
Flagicons weren't a problem at all with your edits; WP is far too inconsistent with their use anyway. My issue was only with linking the name of commonly known countries in the lead and infobox, which I've been told by various "senior" editors is incorrect practice. To have something like "[name] is a Russian biathlete" likely falls foul of both WP:OVERLINK and WP:SEAOFBLUE, respectively. Russia should be familiar to anyone with a primary/elementary school level of education, but the biathlon could well be unfamiliar to many casual readers. As for linking to Soviet, maybe there's an exception for that. People born post-1990s might not as be familiar with former states, regardless of education.
Nonetheless, my appreciation for your time and understanding. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 01:38, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
