Security

Are are you writing on the security related pages? I have seen that some people have lists of "these pages are my most important contributions". I really like such pages, gives a feel for the user's efforts into wikipedia, makes a "user" more into a "person" so to speak :-)

You're right, I should describe my topics of interest on my user page ... but I am not really a topic editor, I just use wikipedia, read articles and correct things when I feel I can ... Adobe Acrobat

Hi Gscshoyru. You just reverted my edit on Adobe Acrobat giving "useless and misplaced" as a reason. Useless ? Knowing how a software has been developed is really important, it is like knowing how the Taj Mahal has been built, concrete or stone. Misplaced ? There are 3 sections in the article: header, history, criticism. The latter two sections can not be considered, I am left with the header, because I don't want to create an entire new section for just this simple sentence. Single editor

Hello, You previously comment about the Articles written by a single editor page. By the way, thanks! I really thought it needed some good redesigns :) And it looks like the page is active again! At first, I had no clue what the purpose for the project page was. So I designed the checklist for wikipedians:) More will be added soon. These single-editor page directories, for which you have my highest praise for composing a program to write, are a little out of date. Just clicking on a few of the first links will show that many have multiple edits going back to mid-2007. I will try to get the groovy code to work for me, but if I cannot by December, (or if you'd like to do so before then), can you update the page? It would be great if you could launch the generation, for two reasons: First to update the list; but more importantly to make the project more sustainable: long-living projects are not those who in the hands of a single person, but those mastered by several people. I can help you master the Groovy scripts, don't hesitate to ask if you need anything :-) You may want to create a subpage of [WP:ASE] to share your experience and potential difficulties with running the generation script. Neural network

"The web application will collect the user's choice and use it to train a neural network." What will be the final result of this training? What will an editor do with it? How will it improve Wikipedia? What do you really mean by this? Yours, GeorgeLouis (talk) 15:17, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

The trained neural network is a mathematical function that takes an article's metrics and output a number. This number is an estimate of how much this article might interest the user who trained the neural network. Applied on all articles, it would give a list of the Wikipedia articles this user most likely want to edit. Thus the user would check (and potentially edit) articles he really feels like editing, and probably does a better job at it. It is just theory, nothing has been implemented yet, and the result would probably be far from perfect. Syced (talk) 15:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Indeed, I actually used it myself, its name is User:SuggestBot. SuggestBot mostly uses a user's edit history, whereas the program I described uses mostly the user's reaction to each suggested article, trying to refine the suggestions over time based on whether the user edited the suggested article or not. Also, SuggestBot tries to find topics that will interest the user (like industry-related chemicals, 12th century travels, etc) which is quite difficult to do. The program I described would not be able to understand topics, instead focusing on articles metrics, for instance it could guess that a particular user will want to edit an article that has had an edit-war a year ago and contributions from only one author since then. It can be thought of as WP:ASE with an adaptive algorithm, rather than the well-defined rules ASE has right now. By the way, we could eventually take the algorithm that adapted well to a given user, check whether it also works for other users, and if it works better than ASE's default algorithm, we would override ASE's algorithm with this adapted one. HMCS Preserver

WRT (with respect to) HMCS (Her Majesty's Canadian Ship) Preserver edit to the TLA (three letter acronym) CUM this was not a joke it stands for Cubic Meter as a unit of measure describing how much fuel was leaked. Any other edits that were previously made in Oct were accurate and referenced (see exterior refs) to news docs attached yet DND (Dept of National Defence) hijacked the page and took them down. If you look at the IP address making the edits registered to DND the same address has done this a number of times and been warned by you. Allwiki

Hi, I saw the description on your userpage, and wondered if you had seen WP:ALLWIKI? It was tried very early on, but was generally found to be too overwhelming, even for editors/readers that like an info-deluge! Every time I see it brought up, I recommend that the editor create a test/demonstration page, by copying an existing article, and then linking every single possible wikilink, to see how overwhelming it would be. (ideally, start with a recent FA, eg John Barrymore).

A few other problems with allwiki are:

• the vast increase in rendered page size. (Compare the page-size that gets downloaded, before and after converting to Allwiki. All that extra code adds up fast.)
• The way it would prevent researchers from mapping out topics that are connected to each other (which our current deliberately editor-decided selection of links, greatly assists with)
• for automated linking, it would be very complex to resolve conflicts, or to deduce context (e.g. here, it says "executive branch", and is referring to a specific government, but an automatically added link would go to executive branch, which is just a general overview).

Hi Syced, thanks for clarifying that you'll be maintaining WP:WRS. At first, I was a bit shocked to see NNDB on the list, but I understand that many editors don't necessarily read the reliable sources noticeboard on a regular basis. Since you've removed the questionable domains mentioned in my comment from the TSV file, everything looks good to me. In the future, I plan to condense the information from WP:RSP, WP:A/S, and WP:VG/S into a machine-readable format, and I'll be happy to supply updated TSVs for WP:WRS.
