Hi Richard, I assume you will be aware of this anyway: One of the best (if not the best) English bookshops in Vienna is Shakespeare and Co around the corner from the Ruprechtskirche. Thanks for helping me out with that expression. I really appreciated that. It's always hard to find the right word if all you have is a description of the concept. I work with many international organizations and often enough they come up with dictionary terms that no one uses or that describe something entirely different. BTW do you find it as disconcerting as I do that one has such a hard time figuring out if a page is related to BE or US usage?? Starting from CPA there are a slew of things that are called something else in BE, particularly in accounting. --Lisa4edit (talk) 07:24, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

BE/AE

I knew about the usage convention, but what I'd like is some way to identify usage of the page title at a glance. On some pages you have to read through half the page and sometimes even go to the references to find out that it's a BE term. (Same goes for AE.) Sometimes the respective AE/BE page doesn't exist or redirects. Technical terms rarely end up on the comparison list. (Thks. for the link.) If I may bother you with one more question, what do you call the account that rent "utilities and service charges expenses" get booked to. I have so far assembled a colorful variety of terms used by companies, but nothing that got more than a shrug or a good laugh on a google search. Many countries put the rent in one item and all the related expenses together in another. Would be nice if I cold finally find the "correct" term to call it. Thks. 4 ur prompt response. That wouldn't work for most of my clients because they call the account that the rent they pay (without the utilities and service charges) is booked to. How do you like "other occupancy expenses" ?? Occupancy expenses would include the rent they book separately from what I found, so it's too broad. By using "Other" I would limit it. Re your question: I have not got the foggiest myself. I just filled in the form - it contains an entry box at the bottom, something like "Where to put the paper?" - so I wrote "put it in front of the door to the apartment", but I am not certain how they come through the front door of the building without ringing our bell at some ungodly hour in the moring. Adam Thorpe

Dear Richardrj, with all the good will I have for your inquiry for recommendations among Adam Thorpe's ouevre, I'm afraid I must disappoint you as I have virtually nothing to offer. The loss is mine as well: a trudge to the local library revealed its collection to hold precisely zero titles of his. I've only recently discovered this author; the one volume of his I read, Shifts, was brought home from (and subsequently returned to) what we call the "pass-around" box outside the library door, filled with individuals' discards that don't pass the librarians' muster for inclusion on the limited-space English-language shelves. (Resource restrictions prevent me from acquiring books by choice; happily, I'm largely content to make do with what comes my way.) I was impressed with this collection of short stories, a favorite genre of mine, and likewise noted the author's recognition as a poet and dramatist. Imagine my indignation, then, to discover he had no page in the English-language Wikipedia! As with other authors I consider worthy of promotion, I took the time and made the effort to create a page with what I could find on the Web, and was gratified to subsequently it expanded by fellow editors. Now thanks to you, I've added Ulverton to my want-to-read list. "In Reagrds to Phil Collins B-Sides and Music Post"

Yes, I was looking for some songs that could be heard and available in the internet or at least at some store of where I could actually purchase. It was 'The Man with Horn' by Phil Collins which I heard was a B-side for his second album, the Hello I Must Be Going album, ' Rad Dudeski' which was a instrumental track not included on the Bost Sides album eventually posted for release, 'Around the World in 80 Presets' which was a B-side of the But Seriously album, and 'Don't Call me Ashley' written orignally for the Bost Sides record.

If not availible in stores is there at least a way where they can be heard on the web?

Or if not that either, is there a way to message the contrlling man of the website whom you found these photos of the 'Lost Album'?

How prescient of you -- after walking around many notorious tracks and climbs, there's a track to the very Hanging Rock, so marking it for next time (we don't seem to have an article on quite that spot though there are others). At one point (reminiscing here) I used one and then two makeshift hiking poles -- it works!

Hovis advert from 1980s

You may remember that I posted a question about this advert and how I a memory of it being with a Yorkshire accent. You replied with a reference to the 1973 version - and thank you for that. The 1973 version had a sort of southern England rural accent. Well, here's the solution to that problem, look and listen - two identical (or almost) clips with very different soundtracks, [3], [4]. R v Southwark Crown Court, ex p Koncar [1998] 1 Cr App Rep 321

The applicant, who suffered from mental illness, was arrested and charged with affray and common assault after attacking a police officer in the erroneous belief that the police officer had killed his girlfriend. After being committed for trial to the Crown Court, a jury determined that the applicant was a person under a disability in accordance with s 4 of the Criminal Procedure (Insanity) Act 1964, a second jury determined in accordance with s 4A of the 1964 Act that he had done the act of common assault but acquitted him of affray, and the judge then proceeded to make an admission order under s 5 of the 1964 Act and sched 1 of the Criminal Procedure (Insanity and Unfitness to Plead) Act 1991. Following the making of the admission order the applicant was transferred from a hospital to a secure unit. The applicant applied for judicial review of the decision to make the admission order and for habeas corpus. It was argued that the judge had no power to make the admission order, on the basis that s 40(2) of the Criminal Justice Act 1988, only gave the Crown Court power to deal with the applicant in respect of the summary offence of common assault in the same way a magistrates' court could have done. Section 40(2) provided inter alia that, '… the Crown Court may only deal with the offender in respect of it in a manner in which a magistrates' court could have dealt with him.' Held Section 40(2) of the 1988 Act was concerned with the Crown Court's powers on conviction, this could be seen from the use of the word 'offender' which referred to a person who had been convicted, in contradistinction to the word 'accused' which was used in ss 4 and 4A of the 1964 Act and referred to a person found to be unfit to plead and not convicted. Once a jury concluded that an accused person was unfit to plead there could be no conviction in respect of any of the offences charged. The subsequent trial of the issue as to whether or not the accused did the act or made the omission charged against him as an offence could not result in a conviction but might affect the way in which the court ultimately decided to dispose of the matter. If Parliament had intended to limit the Crown Court's powers to deal with an accused tried on indictment for a summary offence and found unfit to plead to those powers applicable to the magistrates' court, it could readily have included such a limitation in the section. Accordingly, s 40(2) had no application and the admission order made by the judge was lawful, as were the subsequent transfer orders.

Nice work! However, this user will likely also need the provenance, i.e. where does the text come from? This will be important if Richard wants to make a footnote. As far as copyright goes, same question: is this a summary from a law library or was it published by the court? If the former, it probably is a minor copyvio, which can be corrected by blanking. The text comes from LexisNexis Butterworths. I'm unsure if it was published by the court but because it was a judgement in the District Court, it's unlikely to be published by the royal stationers. As a result I think I'm on unstable copyright here...
