This is my April to August 2007 archive. Things included here are: after numerous noms an RFA attempt which i later had to withdraw, various railway and transport stuff, various wikiproject stuff and assessments.

Route 205, 628 and C2

I've got the information from www.londonbusroutes.net/changes and the Metroline websiteC.bonnick 22:42, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

South Tottenham

I've tweaked Lea Valley Line to include South Tottenham. Comments or improvements welcome! As far as junction names go, according to the Baker rail atlas, a train travelling from Clapton to Seven Sisters would travel over the following junctions and stations:

  • Clapton station
  • Clapton Junction
  • Cooper Mill Junction
  • Tottenham South Junction
  • South Tottenham East Junction
  • South Tottenham station
  • South Tottenham West Junction
  • Seven Sisters Junction
  • Seven Sisters station

Hope this helps! I'll try to find out distances next week. – Tivedshambo (talk) 08:12, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

WP:BUS

I'm sorry if I caused mayhem with that template! I just don't want people to think that they are higher than and/or associated with WP:LT. I want WP:LTs template to be seperate from the bus template. Unisouth 15:29, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

The bus template is based on the rail template, which has the same parameters. It's not meant to show any precedence; it's just a way to reduce clutter on talk pages by combining templates. --NE2 18:10, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Well, just thing about it. Even so, you have about twice as many edits as me, (I think I have like 4,016 or something like that), and I think you'd probably pass. I'll voice my support if you accept. Besides, as Jimbo says, adminship isn't a big deal, and you'd probably pass. Cool Bluetalk to me 14:43, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
The only suggestion I would make would be to capitalize the word I more often, or at least at your RfA, if you accept. Cool Bluetalk to me 14:46, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
Well, just think about it. If you just answer the 5 or 6 questions they give you, and check back once in a while, you should be fine. I don't think it would interfere too much with your RfA, and once this is over, you have the tools of an administrator. Cool Bluetalk to me 14:52, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

RE:MOTD

To the best of my experience (i.e. observing the way in which Iewy closed the nominations), if there are multiple versions of the same motto, only one will (or should) be approved. For example

Re: RFA and edit summary usage

What exactly is wrong with judging edit summary usage? I think this is a good trait. However I do take into factors as well so judgements are not based solely on edit summary usage. Simply south 23:27, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

What is wrong is that people stick a user's name into an edit summary counting script and read out a number, and then – for reasons that defy me – actually pretend that that number has some bearing on the candidate's suitablility for adminship. Nice though it is to be able to rely on numbers rather than actually looking at the candidate's contributions, it is not helpful – Gurch 23:30, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I'll know to continue to review more closely.
I'm sure that doesn't happen all the time (the username for every edit summary, that is), does it? But it probably, on th same area, is more helpful to look at what they are actually typing in the edit summary, as you've effectively said, then whether figures are high or low. Thanks for the advice. Simply south 23:39, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
On the contrary, running the script on the candidate's username is pretty much all that happens, much as it would be nice if people actually looked at the content of the candidate's edit summaries. See my own RfA for a demonstration of the problems this causes – the script malfunctioned for some reason and reported that I only had a 33% edit summary usage. I was hit with a question about this, a couple of neutral votes and a couple of "support, but should use edit summaries more often" (which if they'd had other reasons to doubt me may well have pushed them to neutral or oppose) within an hour or so, before someone else thought to check with another script – and saw that in fact my edit summary usage was 95%. This was last June, but attitudes have hardly changed for the better since then – Gurch 23:45, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Can you please take action against this user (Gnevin 13:23, 6 May 2007 (UTC))

motd nomclosing

Hi. Should we settle for a consensus? User:Magnus animum thinks that it is "mottoes", while you and I both agree it is "mottos". What dilect of English, in your opinion, should we use? Or, is it just personal preference? Should we vote on a consensus at the templatetalkpage? Thanks. – AstroHurricane001(Talk+Contribs+Ubx)(+sign here+How's my editing?) 15:44, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

This may just be a coincidence, but it turns out, after reading both of your userpages, that we both use commonwealth English, while the user who said "mottoes" uses American english. Do you think this is a coincidence, or is it based on regional english varieties? Thanks. – AstroHurricane001(Talk+Contribs+Ubx)(+sign here+How's my editing?) 15:53, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
Well, I guess maybe it is just a coincidence. If you want, you could say so on the talkpage, but is seems that people who use "mottoes" are american. Thanks. – AstroHurricane001(Talk+Contribs+Ubx)(+sign here+How's my editing?) 17:12, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Merging template

I'm not really much of a technical person. Is it possible to create a template to suggest merger of sections within the same article into fewer sections in that same article, therefore increasing the size of some sections but reducing the number of sections within the same article? I hope i'm not too waffly or wordy which i have a feeling i am.

Also, would i need to suggest this anywhere else? Simply south 19:59, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello! The {{cleanup-combine}} template (which places tagged articles in Category:Articles in need of internal merging) appears to be what you seek. —David Levy 02:08, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Herts arms

I don't have a free-use image (or I'd have used it). I think you could maybe ask my friends User:TSP or User:Armtuk who are both good at making SVGs out of bitmap images; if the whole achievement of arms are too complicated, maybe they could just do the shield. (Send hugs from me.) Good luck with your WikiProject; I'd like to join it myself (I was born in Hitchin). Marnanel 16:15, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Walkway/travelator

I'm unsure which term is most common, though from personal experience, moving walkway is the one I hear most. I could do a search in dictionaries and encyclopaedias and see which term tends to be listed first.

I think the article could do with some padding out, but I've done my best to include as much of the information from the original page as possible.--Jcvamp 22:11, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

I've looked up the different terms and 'travelator' seems to be solely a British term. I am English myself, and I've heard of the device from TV programmes mostly (I live in a village so there aren't any about). I, personally, find walkway more neutral than either pavement or sidewalk (apparently the device can be called a 'moving sidewalk' or 'moving pavement'). Also, 'moving walkway' is the definitions that the others direct to on dictionary.com. What do you think?--Jcvamp 22:27, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

I've still added the dictionary.com reference for future reference in case anyone wants to discuss the title again. Thanks for checking it out too.--Jcvamp 22:43, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Probably because {{click}} is broken, hacky, and doesn't work properly. Historical Scottish Railway companies (and lines)

Do you think it would be okay if I split these from {{Railway lines in Scotland}}? Also forgot to say, thanks for the sources. Simply south 17:14, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

I have no problem with this. Then comes the un-enviable task of ensure the correct template (or templates) are inserted into each line - railway company. --Stewart 23:32, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Separately, the new template is under Template:Historical Scottish railway companies. Simply south 12:21, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Not convinced with the background colour, or everything in bold, but these are personal style issues. --Stewart 12:32, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

I still have difficulty with this article. I think it needs to be split to cover the current operation (Glasgow Central to Paisley Canal) and the historical line (St Enoch to the original Johnstone Low). For example, the current article only has a route map to Paisley Canal (I am sure we had it going further). Also the current Hawkhead and Dumbreck stations were new for the re-opening, and there was a station at Bellahouston. Then there is Mosspark, which I think given is concrete platform construction is possible of LMS or BR vintage. Thoughts? --Stewart 23:36, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

It effectively follows the same route. I think parts of the article could be reworded and expanded but as it is the same line really i think it should stay as it is. The route map could be extened further but maybe with ex-links. If you want an example of an article which ha both the historical and modern line, see London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. Simply south 12:21, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Understood - To do list will include revision of route map. On a separate thought, do you know when the main station building was taken out of use and the over line structure was built. This was the setup when I regularly used the station from October 1980 until closure. --Stewart 12:32, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Peaches and Georgia

It's Word Association. I was under the impression that Word Association was played by naming the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the last word said. Therefore, peaches made me think of Georgia (because they are grown in that state). I could just as easily have said "Pits" or "James and the Giant Peach" or "Pears." Georgia, however, was what immediately came to mind. -- Tckma 02:50, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Re: Motto approve\rejected

There were already a lot of nominations being reopened, so on the ones that had two support votes, I added in my own, to make three, which, since there were no oppose votes, seemed like just enough to warrant approval of the nomination. I probably should have reopened them, and normally would have, but there were already 19 reopened nominations. If you object to a particular motto's approval, feel free to remove it from its Motto of the Day subpage and reopen its nomination by cutting and pasting it from the archives. Just cross out my decision of approval and mark it as "reopened". --Tewy 19:33, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Newcastle

Steady on!! The village is called Newcastle and never really Newcastle-on-Clun - the longer name is really only ever used for the civil parish. I will make things clearer in the article! David 18:20, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

To follow on, maps such as Ordnance Survey or an AA Atlas only ever put "Newcastle". Click on the Crown pub link at the bottom of the article too. The parish is called "Newcastle-on-Clun" to distinguish it from other parishes in the country called Newcastle. David 18:28, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Transport in Scotland/Assessment

Hi Simply South,

I'm getting confused over some of the assessment directories. In the last two days I've increased the number of assessed articles by about 100%, from 61 to 119. And I can now find the lists, etc, mostly under Category:******* Scotland Transport articles, where **** = FA-Class, B-Class, Mid-importance, etc; however these do not appear to be the pages the project page points to.Pyrotec 18:43, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

My problem is this esoteric assessment template. It is slightly under-documented. It should (as a default) put all articles with a {WPTIS|class=} flag into [Category:WikiProject Transport in Scotland article] and it appears to do that. However, if it is a {WPTIS|class=NA|type= List, Template, or Category} flag then these articles should go into [Category:WikiProject Transport in Scotland list], [Category:WikiProject Transport in Scotland template] or [Category:WikiProject Transport in Scotland category], as appropriate, and so far this does not appear to be happening.

OK, I accept that I made a small type in the Unref Category, but once the CFD goes through I will need to dab the esoteric assessment template again. Pyrotec 19:56, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick dab on the template. I sort off got carried away with this assessment. I tend to do between 100 and 200 edits per month and I've done over 400 this month.
A bigger problem. The logic of the WPTIS template was to place the relevant talk pages of FA-Class, B-Class, Start-Class, Top-importance, articles, etc, etc, into [Category: "same"-Class Scotland Transport articles] categories; whereas the "type" part (which is faulty so far) was to put List, Template, etc, into [Category: WikiProject Transport in Scotland "same type"] categories. WikiProject Transport also has a Transport Scotland flag that does the same sort, i.e. either [Category: "same"-Class Scotland Transport articles] or [Category: WikiProject Transport in Scotland "same type"] categories; but that template is protected. I find it difficult to navigate all the cats at the moment. Could we have some consistency? The main Assessment Bot uses [category: Transport Scotland] so there is a preference (presummably) for using those ones. I know that Stewart has a very good Worksheet; but it should be just as easy to find unclassified, unreferenced or mapneeded articles by going to [Category: Unclassified Scotland Transport articles] [Category: Unreferenced Scotland Transport article] [Category:Mapneeded Scotland Transport article].Pyrotec 20:24, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Having got your message (but not read it) whilst I was composing the above - we seem to have come to the same conclusions - but see my note about WikipProject transport.Pyrotec 20:29, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
No this is part of WP Trains template (normal users have the ability to copy but not to change it). I've "bent it" so that it lists rather than "does".

Scope

I've already assessed the Falkirk Wheel and some canals.

It should include boats (canal, ferries, rivers, viaducts); trains (trains, railways, lines, stations, etc): planes (airports); roads (roads, motorways, bridges).

I think we most of them covered so far, except roads, motorways, bridges. Pyrotec 19:30, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Ok, will do! Is there anything else that can be done to boost members? I've already got some templates, which will be loaded up to the main page shortly, and I have someone who is going to do a portal etc for me. Theres also a userbox if you would like it. Bluegoblin7 16:57, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Ok, what do you mean by a banner? Is it the things that go on talk pages? Bluegoblin7 17:02, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

I totally agree that the project needs one, however I am completely unsure how to edit one: The Userbox was made by someone else, and the portal will be made by the same person, and everything else I just used a lot simpler code and edited the relavent bits! If you can help, please do (the image is the one in the Userbox), but if not, I will ask the person doing the box/portal for one. Bluegoblin7 17:14, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
Thank you very much - do you mind? There are countless pages created so far - I am going to try and put them all on one page when I get round to it. Thanks your for your comments. It's been an interesting experience so far. One big lesson I've learnt so far is to read the talk: page first!!!! Marcgr 21:24, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

I have a couple of questions:
1. When I use the "What links here" Wikipedia lists every page included those using a category template box indirectly. Is there a way to list which contains just the list of pages directly refereed to?
2. Is there page a which talks about how uses should talk to each other? So far I've been writing on User_talk pages but get confused as to whether to continue on my own page or respond on the originators page? Marcgr 21:56, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

re:Unreferenced- Scotland Transport articles

Kbdank71 dealt with this move. You can see from the last edit at Template:WPTIS, that the typo was transcluded through the template on a number of articles. That has since been fixed. If you click on any of the articles listed at Category:Unreferenced- Scotland Transport articles, you will note that none of them actually have that category on them. The database just hasn't been updated yet, due to serve lag with the template transclusion of the category. If that makes sense. Needless to say, the category is in line to be deleted, and the move has already taken place (just needs the database to update before everything displays normally). Hope this helps.-Andrew c [talk] 22:54, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Re: For the Record

Thanks for your note, but I see no reason to propose the project when I can just go ahead and start it. I don't really see how it overlaps with WikProject Wikipedia, either. Andre (talk) 00:37, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

re:leaving

beleive me, i do not want to leave, but certain individuals have compelled me to do so - I am happy to learn, but not to be criticised. I may well return, as i hav'nt been able to resist certain things. Thanks for your words of encouragement - not many people have been doing so recently. Bluegoblin7 18:05, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Re: WPTIS importance

I've got it working now in my test area using Scotland-transport as the parameter name. There are a few more tests I want to run before installing it, but so far it looks good. Slambo (Speak) 18:32, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
