You can use helpful scripts like Popups or all this stuff and edit semi-protected pages (after a while), which is pretty neat. Some of the more trigger-happy users are also less likely to rollback your changes when they see a username instead of an IP. --illythr (talk) 19:30, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I put the new socks you found after User:Dennis Brown closed the previous investigation into their own new section. Just a heads up. Ansh666 03:42, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • It doesn't matter, they are already blocked. We just need a list to know what edits/articles to check later. Someone not using his real name (talk) 03:43, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Okay, then, it'll probably be closed soon. Thanks anyways, Ansh666 03:46, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • The problem with stale socks is there just isn't anything we can do there. We stay backlogged, so there isn't much purpose in investigating someone who hasn't edited in a year. Actually, we cant run a CU on anything over 90 days old, they purge the logs. Dennis Brown |  | WER 10:13, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • That's fine. I think you have helped substantially already. Most of those accounts on the list I created/updated are blocked either by now you or were blocked by AGK (back in Feb.), except for maybe for 5-10 or so of the 50 accounts I listed, the oldest ones. I did not request a check-user on the stale ones myself; Ansh666 did, but he understands now that is not helpful. My goal there was to have to a list of the accounts that have edited substantially, so myself and possibly others interested (e.g. Ansh666) can coordinate in a review/clean-up of the problematic edits, mostly of the stub articles these socks created. If I should have created the list somewhere else, I apologize, but I don't know of another place that would have been appropriate. I've avoided listing accounts that have been blocked when they have made only trivial or no contributions, e.g. Special:Contributions/Neuhr, those whose contributions whose contributions were not apparently problematic, e.g. Special:Contributions/Xuihua, Special:Contributions/Uwkka or Special:Contributions/Fuyuoy, Special:Contributions/Wnuak or those whose contributions have been checked for content problems already, e.g. Special:Contributions/Xuaoi (Exotic weaponry already deleted; I guess we should still evaluate if the associated category created [by Skrunyak] [1] is of some use to the reader.) Deletions[edit]

I noticed that you're trying to delete some "not notable" Russian firearms. I agree with you, and you can find many more on the List of Russian weaponry page. Also, please look at the List of Russian inventions page. It is filled with Russian propaganda claiming to have invented everything from the wheel to the computer. It also uses Wikipedia pages as references and is filled dead internet links, and completely unverifiable foreign language references that do not meet Wiki standards. I have tried to remove some of them myself but was reverted.--RAF910 (talk) 19:16, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As for the NA-2 and NA-4 I also vote for deletion as they are not notable and certainly not deserving of their own pages. Both are dead end prototypes. Both articles consist of only two sentences. If the Armalite AR-15, a real production rifle that evolved into the M16 and semi-auto Colt AR-15 does not merit its own page, then the NA-2 and NA-4 most certainly do not. If you want to add them to the deletion page I will support you.--RAF910 (talk) 22:44, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

List of fashion designers[edit]

Hi - Edith Flagg was born in Romania, so she is listed under Romania. It was decided that rather than risk trying to sort people by the country they are most active in (which could lead to some people being listed under ALL the countries they've got shops/business activity in), sorting by nationality (place of birth) was a consistent rule of thumb which meant that there could only be one place on the list for each name - their place of birth. Yes, it's not a perfect science, but it avoids people adding Chanel and Versace to every single place on the list. Mabalu (talk) 18:49, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: ANI vs. AE[edit]

I don't think your assessment of the situation with Badmintonhist's stalking is accurate. A number of the edits (both linked in the current case and in the previous one here) are not about abortion at all, and simply illustrate that Badmintonhists primary motivation in editing is to revert me or otherwise prevent me from editing. It may or may not be motivated, at base, by an editing agenda, but I don't think that's the concern here; it's just misbehavior. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 17:59, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DYK[edit]

Hi Someone not using his real name, I saw your new article, Shpitalny Sh-37. It is the right size to be submitted for DYK, so, I took the liberty of nominating it for the Did You Know section on the main page. I hope you like the hook! Matty.007 17:15, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm still working on improving the article, but I don't mind. Also I have expanded a few others, which probably qualify including PV-1 machine gun and Nudelman-Suranov NS-45. Those are a bit more mature, because I've exhausted most of the material available [to me] about them. Someone not using his real name (talk) 17:17, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can nominate them yourself if you want, just go here, and follow the instructions. Ignore anything you see about QPQ, that only applies after you have 5 DYK credits. I wasn't sure if you were aware of the DYK process, so thought you could get involved... Matty.007 17:44, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

ANI notification[edit]

Information icon Hello. There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.Coldman the Barbarian (talk) 11:59, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rather than trying to prove the existence of detectives or the authenticity of the video, find some sources (in Russian or English) that without question meet the requirements of a reliable source and then there is not a problem. LGA talkedits 06:59, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, sorry for the somewhat blown-out-of-proportion misunderstanding[edit]

I apologize for assuming bad faith on your part. Your pointing out your edits from back in 2007 convinced me that I was in fact in the wrong. You will understand that it certainly looked like you were a meat puppet when you made your first edit under your more recent IP, so I hope you can forgive my having drawn certain conclusions from that. You were also acting in good faith when you opened your recent SPI. ArbCom was already looking into it, as I had openly admitted to using multiple accounts on ANI. They really did come to the conclusion that my editing was not disruptive, and that I was justified in hiding my identity after the previous incident. (I'm still not going to give you the worst, non-public details of that earlier incident unless you tell register an e-mail with your account, though.) They said that I needed to stop editing under multiple named accounts, so I plan on ending my Wikipedia activity after the dust has settled on the Bagworm issue, and I promised them to limit myself exclusively to this account until then. They will notice immediately if I start editing under other accounts. Anyway, I hope there is no longer any bad blood between the two of us. Kind regards, Coldman the Barbarian (talk) 12:22, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I think I may have overreacted in my replies somewhat. I wish you well. Someone not using his real name (talk) 12:26, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding ANI[edit]

Not to beat a dead horse until its head falls off, but regarding this edit: if you go back and look at his contributions list, a very, very large proportion of his JLit edits are only semi-constructive at best. Most of his sources were questionable online poetry mags, with articles representing a consensus among modern English poets rather than Japanese literary scholars, and it got to the point of blatant advertisement at times. His last post blatantly expressed nostalgia for the 2008-2012 period when I was inactive and he could get away with that, and also insisted that I was "new to the area" of Japanese literature even though I had been editing in the area in 2005. Until I got involved he refused to interact with the rest of the Wikipedia community, and whenever I tried to bring in comments from the broader community he referred to the tag-team he had formed with one other COI modern English poetry edit as "consensus". Why did he retire? Did he realize he didn't have a case to bring to the Wikipedia community, and that it wouldn't take long for the same thing as happened to his tag-team partner to happen to him? Search Talk:Haibun and Talk:Prosimetrum for the word "consensus" and you will quickly find him referring to his own opinion (shared by the banned user Tristan noir) as "consensus". I don't expect you to go back and do extensive research on these issues before commenting, but please at least read my comments before just assuming I am lying. It was pretty obvious throughout that discussion that you had not bother reading my original case. Hijiri 88 (やや) 13:50, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

ABF accusations[edit]

Give it a goddamn break already. Joe jobs are impossible because of CU. Maybe the reason I "edit-warred" with myself was because I was upset that JoshuSasori had caused me to miss WP:APRIL. It doesn't matter now anyway, as I have committed numerous times to using only this account.

But the times IPs similar to mine reverted my logged-in edits were both NOT me.

Please stop it with the hounding or you'll be the next one taken to ANI. People who hound me have a nasty habit of getting blocked when they get there.

Hijiri 88 (やや) 13:55, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

By the way[edit]

My IP is also shared by a banned vandal/conspiracy-theorist. And I never said the person on the same IP range as me who reverted me was the same person as JoshuSasori, nor that he/she was harassing me. Don't lie about me. Please. Grow up. Or the same thing that happened to all the other users who hounded me and were brought to ANI will happen to you.

Cheers!

Hi Someone not using his real name, please if you could kindly spare some time and drop in your thoughts on the new steps, moderated by admin Nick-D, that are being taken to resolve the dispute regarding blitzkrieg on the Battle of Kursk article. EyeTruth (talk) 17:19, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, it looks too time consuming. I've already said what I had to say about this on the DRN page. Someone not using his real name (talk) 17:23, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, ok. Although this is just about giving your opinion regarding two versions being put forward. But if you still think that is time consuming, you can just summarize your view presented in the DRN case. Something as brief as a one or two sentence-summary will suffice. Other editors involved would appreciate your input. EyeTruth (talk) 17:53, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Someone, there is an ongoing poll to settle this issue once and for all. Nick-D has suggested that a poll on the suggested wordings would be the best way to avoid the whole drama and reach a conclusion. All you need to do this time around is to place your vote for whichever version you think is preferable. The LINK EyeTruth (talk) 17:31, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should ask someone with script (file mover?) access on Commons. I have marked the old (jpg) image as superseded, but apparently more bureaucracy is needed per commons:Commons:Superseded_images_policy#Redundant.2Fbad_quality. Someone not using his real name (talk) 15:44, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It seems you have created the png from the larger jpg (File:UDR Sign.jpg), so there's not visible difference between the the smaller jpg and the png, although there is a minor size difference 99 Kb jpg vs. 95 Kb png. Probably not worth the hassle to do replacement manually under these circumstances, although one of those script wizards from Commons would probably do it in a heartbeat. I think the design, like that of many artillery pieces, was licensed, so it's hard to disentangle the licensed production vs. units that were sold by the manufacturer, and the arms trade in that era was even more shady than it is now. Add in that documentation was in multiple languages, a couple of intervening wars, and the fact that it was probably a secret at the time, and it'll be hard to source without a research archive at hand. Acroterion (talk) 13:20, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: BASC[edit]

I can't think of a situation where we've overturned a community ban without community consultation beforehand, but we hear appeals from all users. Often we punt community bans back to the community. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 23:50, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs, exactly what is involved in a "community consultation"? A conversation on an Editor's Talk Page or posing the case at AN/I? I'm trying to find out what is required to be unblocked from "community consensus" and I'm being told different things.
In the case of Bonkers the Clown, an Admin reviewed the case and unblocked him. In the case of L'Origine, a different Admin reviewed the appeal and declined. But there was no "community" involvement even though both Editors were indefinitely blocked because of cases posted to AN/I that went a little wild and off-track (and on the same day, but different results). Neither Bonkers nor L'Origine have been community banned at any stage; however, both were indefinitely blocked by community consensus. It is possible for an individual admin, with local support, to overturn a community block; but any community ban appeal has to go through WP:AN. :) Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 22:13, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just seeing this comment, Lukeno94. I didn't realize that a community ban was even possible via AN/I. I thought bans were only given out by ARBCOM. Liz Read! Talk! 13:22, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • You can't be community banned via ARBCOM. A community ban is a ban voted on by the community at AN or ANI. Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 14:09, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Then, Lukeno94, what do you call a site-wide ban levied by ARBCOM? Just a site ban? Liz Read! Talk! 23:02, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • An "ARBCOM ban", is what I would call it. Site ban also works, but that's a general term that could apply for both. There may be a proper/official term for an ARBCOM ban; if there is, I can't remember what it is at present. Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 23:06, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help identify this weapon[edit]

Help identify this weapon. I added it to the article on the Mountain gun. The Library of Congress has lots of images of WWI that are asking people to help give context to. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 18:22, 5 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The 80mm mountain gun looks like an old De Bange 80 mm mountain gun (different from the field gun) with an improvised carriage. The 130mm projectile is most likely an improvisation, as there were many such kinds in the early days of the trench warfare before the Stokes mortar was adopted in large numbers. Thanks for catching that claim on the System/36 page; heck, I think the original IBM PC had 25x80. It was the same size as a number of computer terminals, so I changed it just to say that. (And, no, they can't argue that it's the same size as terminal emulator windows in GUIs; maybe xterm or Terminal or Konsole or gnome-terminal or... default to 24x80, but they can certainly be resized, and I don't run 24x80 on my Mac, for example; I suspect cmd.exe defaults to 25x80, and it's also resizable.) Edits to the OpenZFS article[edit]

Hello there! While I do appreciate your edits, you should be more careful while deleting content. For example, you've deleted a few good references, and some explicit anchors used for external links. Please pay more attention to such things. Thank you. — Dsimic (talk) 22:30, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Let's take it easy, please. I'm not questioning your deletions of content, I'm speaking about the way you're doing that. While deleting some content, you should be checking for keeping references and explicit anchors. References are probably there to stay, and deleting explicit anchors (what means {{anchor|...}} pieces of wiki code) breaks links from other pages. Hope it makes more sense. — Dsimic (talk) 22:40, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Since I don't actually remember removing any citation templates, but I surely added plenty of new referenced info to various articles, and since your user page is lavishly adorned with so many self-congratulatory GA tags, I suggest that you format whatever is bothering you yourself and then self-congratulate yourself with another GA tag (ok, put the article through the perfunctory GA review process first). It's a win-win situation, unless of course you want me to do all the work, including formatting the refs and so you can claim your GA thingy. You were supportive of the idea that Jehochman proposed: "A message is most effective when it matches the format of the media. We're an encyclopedia. On Feb 11, I suggest we fill our front page with articles, blurbs and news about mass spying and privacy. That will send a strong message, and help educate people. It's sort of like what we do on April 1, except serious instead of foolish."

Since this proposal received so much support, I and several others have done our best to begin the process of implementation. That said, the proposal is very controversial with Main Page insiders who have, understandably, objections that boil down to WP:NOTADVOCATE.

It's valuable to have feedback from people who oppose any deviation from the status quo, but we really need feedback from people who understood Jehochman idea, supported it, and could tell us whether we're succeeding in "implementing the vision" that Jehochman laid out and how to improve the proposal.

If you have the time, would you lend your view over at Wikipedia:Surveillance awareness day. If you want to see a list of custom content that could be available, we have a Arbitrary mockup #2, that shows lots of proposed content on one page.

Your feedback is most appreciated. --HectorMoffet (talk) 09:53, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Xbox One[edit]

Hi, I removed your link because it was simply added on to the end of the article in the links section with no context or referencing from within the article itself. Would you be interested in starting an article similar to the PlayStation 4 technical specifications or Espresso (microprocessor) articles, where it could be used as a reference? SynergyBlades (talk) 18:21, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not being (yet) referenced from the article is what the external links (or WP:FURTHER reading) section is for. Maybe someone will write a sub-article for the Xbox One SoC, but in the mean time I see nothing wrong with having that link there, which provides a bit more info than the Wikipedia article. WikiProjects about surveillance[edit]

I really appreciate your comment to Jimbo's page. Though it's not that we don't care - it's just hard to track when they rename their programs every time something is published about them, and besides, from a common perspective what difference does it make which TLA claims a right to make your ISP spy on you, when you don't have a right to privacy?

Still, this is Wikipedia and we should have articles on all these things! So while I can harvest some names from your post -- would you consider joining a WikiProject, either the inactive WP:WikiProject Intelligence Agency or the newly started WP:WikiProject Mass Surveillance (I'm thinking we should merge them anyway, somehow) and post a list of all the redlinks you can think of? Question[edit]

It looks like you know how a good Wikipedia article should be. I wonder what do you think about I Can Read!. I believe it was started by a new SPA account and it was deleted. Then it was started again. See the edit summary "begin stub" But the question is, if the book is notable enough to have its own Wikipedia entry. What do you think? Thanks.76.126.141.41 (talk) 16:29, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's mostly a WP:LIST article about a book series. Maybe an WP:AfD for it is justified, but at least some of the books in that series appear to be notable (have their own wiki articles.) To have a fair chance at deleting the series page, you'd have to start with the individual articles for the books and work up from there; but make sure you read WP:BEFORE. That's wikilife[edit]

Hi.

I don't mind a partial counter-revert that addresses the revert's original concern, but I've often seen you getting tensed up over doing it. Well, I want to show you something that makes you feel better:

See, Jeh and I can have substantial disagreements in many cases but once we discover its impact (or the lack, thereof) on the article, we quickly work out a compromise and leave impactless portion of disagreement in the world of abstract things that remain abstract. The important thing, however, is that we talk outside pings and edit summaries.

So, next time you felt you didn't like my revert, please let me know; I probably like you. Oh, and please don't mind my curt edit summaries. How much can I go into pleasantries when I only have 128 characters?

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 03:13, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you were the one who added the text I removed (I don't know if you were), my removal wasn't a "partial counter-revert". Removing claims which are both unreferenced and wrong (or at least quite misleading) is something that goes under the banner "best to have no info than wrong info". I think Jimbo said something like that. Anyway, it actually seemed the best solution there rather than add references for the "but it's not really so" part because running 16-bit stuff is only a tangential issue in that article. Călan[edit]

I saw your review of my DYK nomination and thought I'd respond here. Let me start by saying that I take copyright issues seriously and do try to respect WP:C. However, let's consider a few practical aspects:

  • The author of those passages is 71 years old. If he uses e-mail, he keeps it well hidden. So contacting him to request permission is probably not an option.
  • There are not that many sources on industrial activity taking place in a remote corner of Austria-Hungary 120 years ago - certainly not online.
  • There are not that many ways to say what the original source says.
    • "In 1896, the second furnace was replaced with one 380 m3 in volume, able to produce 120-140 tons of cast iron per day."
    • I suppose we could change that around a little.
    • "In 1896, a new furnace was installed. This was 380 m3 in volume and had a daily production capacity of 120 to 140 tons of cast iron. It replaced the original second furnace."
    • But that's about the best I can think of, given the limitation of having just one source at hand.

To be clear, I'm not trying to justify violations of copyright. The rules are as they are. But in eight years on Wikipedia, the "close paraphrasing" conundrum is one I've never quite mastered. If you stick too closely to the source, you're plagiarizing. If you deviate too far, you're performing original research. In any event, I'm willing to work to clean things up. - Biruitorul Talk 15:42, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If it were just 1-2 short sentences, I wouldn't have posted about. But it's 3-4 paragraphs that are like that, sentence after sentence. Since this is my first DYK review, I may be overly paranoid in that regard. It's probably best that someone else, more experienced, takes over the review. That seem to be what happens at DYK in cases like this. As for writing advice, when I'm confronted with a situation like that, i.e. when I have a single source I can cite for a sizable amount of material, what I try to do is jot down the basic facts in an bullet outline, with as little wording as possible, and then I go back a couple of days later and expand on the outline with my own words. (The reason for the time delays is that if I expand on the outline immediately, I end up using too many phrases from the original that simply stick in my head, but that's probably just me. It is a bit like clean room design, although not quite as strict.) Someone not using his real name (talk) 21:28, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As there have been new edits to the article and new comments at the DYK page, may I ask you to take another look? I hope I've made enough progress in addressing the issues you raised. - Biruitorul Talk 04:45, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry[edit]

Hey, I just wanted to apologize for my comments at ANI; while I stand by the point behind it (that discussing things might've been better than not), I said it in an unnecessary way, that on reflection might've made a sensitive subject worse. I should've said it better. I now see your thread above; I'm doubly sorry if my comments were part of that. Writ Keeper  20:25, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if I can help myself not fix any wiki articles at all in the future, but for now I do need a wiki break. Someone not using his real name (talk) 23:33, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If I may provide an advice, please take a break. I've also had those "screw Wikipedia, why in the hell am I doing this at all?" moments, but again, after cooling a bit I've always realized that contributing to Wikipedia is actually a good thing – you're making your notes public for the world's benefit. Other people are improving those notes further, huge numbers of people are learning from them, also you can always come back and use those notes to recall a few things etc.
There will always be people not respecting your (or mine, or anyboy else's) hard work here, but why should you care? In most cases (excluding the vandals, of course) such people aren't evil by the nature, they're most probably just unaware of the big picture. Also, there's always something to be learned from everyone, even from the people appearing to be hostile at the moment, and Wikipedia is a great place for that.
Please spend a few minutes reading this essay, in case you haven't seen it already – it helped me a lot to become wiser when it comes to editing Wikipedia, and hopefully wiser in the real life as well. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 00:08, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Brogrammer[edit]

The article Brogrammer has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unencyclopedic, more of a slang term more fit for a place such as Urban Dictionary

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
