Re: Hernan[edit]

i t NEEDS an article now. its a Major hurricane and it will have one by tomorrow, possibly under the name Hurricane Hernan72.193.254.254 (talk)

I really do No need for such a stubby article on a storm that never touched land. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:52, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • No Merge Hold out on the merge for now. I'm currently working on rewriting the whole article. Wait until I've finished, then see if it still needs to be merged. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 01:55, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Sounds good. Fine with no merge for now. Don't forget to use TWO's and TWD's (both on here). ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:59, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm going to move the article to a user sub page for now. I'm tired and I don't want to do a sloppy job on it. Sorry for delaying it. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 02:38, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • No MergeIt has not been edited since Labor Day, butI think we should all help Cyclonebiskit do the job.--72.193.254.254 (talk) 04:00, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see any need for an article on Hernan. It didn't affect any land, it didn't set any records, and overall there wasn't much of anything special about it. However, if you are interested in article writing, there are plenty of older storms that either have articles and need work, or caused some impact on land but do not have an article. Or, if you want to focus on Hernan, you could always work on the section in the season article. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:16, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please wait till Cyclonebiskit finished it, the storm history isn't done. At least wait until it goes to Hurricane Hernan (2008)

It should be clear that i am doing edits. Check the Revision history and you will see edits done by me.--72.193.254.254 (talk) 19:55, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It shoud be noted that you are the first person to put it under the correct section. thank you. --72.193.254.254 (talk) 19:58, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We agreed unanimously here that there is no need to have the timeline in the storm article. The text in the timeline should be in the storm history. And by the way, Hernan is still being proposed for a merger. You might want to discuss why it should not be merged. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:08, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yellow Evan! In case it hasn't been done, I'd like to formally welcome you to Wikipedia. First, I noticed that you've been editing tropical cyclone articles, so you might be interested in joining the WikiProject Tropical cyclones, an organized group of editors focused on creating, expanding, and improving tropical cyclone-related articles. That said, I've looked over your contribution list, and I've noticed a few things. First, per notability guidelines, not all tropical cyclones need an article, especially ones that caused little damage, regardless of strength. One such storm is Hurricane Hernan (2008), which probably doesn't need an article. It would be more productive to work on existing storm articles. If you do want to create articles, you should become familiar with Wikipedia's policies, guidelines, and the WikiProject Tropical cyclone's standards. A good place to learn about writing better articles is this page. One of the most important aspects to creating articles is to cite your sources, and format them properly. Another important process is using correct grammar, and learning small tricks of the trade, such as never using exclamation points in an article. The next is to calm down :)

This article dose not need to be merged if you look and the to do section of this page —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.193.254.254 (talk) 17:25, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Although I understand that this storm can have an article even though it never affect land, the creation of it should have been held off until the TCR for it came out. The TCR would make it much easier to create an accurate and useful article for a storm that didn't affect land. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 01:03, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Boris TCR is not even out so I would not count on it, however its says on my talk that it needs an article now so i would rename it Hurricane Hernan(2008) when its finished and yes i am also editing it from time to time.--72.193.254.254 (talk) 03:56, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The order of the storm doesn't determine how long the TCR takes to come out. Stronger/long lived/landfalling storms take longer than weaker/short lived/non-landfalling storms. It also depends on the activity of the season, the more active, the less time they have to write them up. Also this page is now under my user page, for the time being do not update this page or revert my edits. It takes time to make an article that is useful to be put out in the main space. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 07:08, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an near to above normal season but the above normal season of 2006 had a lot of TCR come out early, but Boris TCR is not out.--72.193.254.254 (talk) 16:27, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's because the atlantic was quiet, they had the extra time to write them. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 22:02, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MM, I would say the average number of TCR is 28.However The TCR of 2005 came out mostly in April and they had over 50 reports to wrie, Some extremely long ones like Katrina. So, I think the Hernan TCR wont be out until December.--72.193.254.254 (talk) 23:12, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Assement scale[edit]

Yellow Evan, I noticed that you keep assessing your own articles up to C and B class. The fact that they're nowhere close to those levels aside, it is generally discouraged to assess your own articles. Please refrain from doing such, and ask another editor's opinion on an article. Thank you. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 14:08, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, it shouldn't be. The assessment scale is not a grade of how long the article is. Hurricane Hernan (2008) is very poorly written, there's little content outside of a rough storm history, it's under-references, and the lead is too short. It could either be considered a stub or a start right now, though certainly no higher. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 14:14, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead. Let me know when you're done so I can re-assess. But please do not upgrade it yourself. Also, I'm going to ask you again to please sign your comments on talk pages with ~~~~. Thank you. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 14:23, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, because there is no guarantee that it will in fact be better. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 14:28, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The writing is still very poor. There are still exclamation points. There is incorrect grammar. There are short, stubby sentences, with little meaning. And what's that link the middle of the prose? –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 14:36, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why do you keep moving Hernan into the mainspace, and reverting the merging? There is a clear consensus to merge, and your edits are beginning to resemble vandalism. Please stop. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 19:36, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Hernan 08[edit]

The article is still very poor. The entire "impact" and "preparations" section does not have a citation that backs up what is there. The prose is still horrible, far from being well-written. No offense, but I still think the article should be merged, as there is absolutely no need for such a poorly-written article. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:26, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ugh, please stop removing the citation needed tag on the Hernan article. You need a reference that says, explicitly, that Hernan caused increased waves along the coast of Mexico. More importantly, it seems like you are going in the wrong direction. Some of your edits have been borderline disruptive, and it seems like you are going down a bad path here. I am willing to provide help, if you are willing to accept it.
First and foremost, you need to learn that you do not own your articles. As such, please do not revert changes that other people have made. If there is an overwhelming consensus that an article you wrote should not exist, then please do not make things difficult by keep restoring the articles. Instead, try and figure out why they were merged, and see if anything else can be done. In most cases, you can expand the storm section in the season article, instead of creating a separate article.
Second, and equally as important, you need to learn to write better. This is an encyclopedia, not a blog or low-brow website. I'll repeat, this is an encyclopedia. We expect good writing, both in terms of spelling and grammar. A quick way to make your article 10 times better is to run it through a spell check, such as Microsoft Word.
Is Hernan salvageable? That depends on whether the rest of the project wants articles on storms that caused no impact (which is still not set in stone). However, what you can do is work on other, more impacting storms. Your article on the Mazatlán Hurricane was a good idea, since that storm was rather notable. The problem was that it wasn't nearly long enough. When making an article, you need a wide range of sources, not just one link; the project created a resources page just for this purpose. Additionally, you need to make sure the article is as comprehensive as possible. For storms that affected land, that means you need to cover every portion of the storm's impact. Compare Hernan to Hurricane John (2006), which was WP:FA. Notice how long it is, how much it covers, and how well-written it is. That isn't possible with Hernan, since it didn't affect land. It would be possible for a storm like Hurricane Juliette (2001), Hurricane Fausto (1996), or maybe even Hurricane Hernan (1996), since I know you like the name ;) Please, read what I said and think about it. Cheers. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:01, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That is the only response you have? Please read what I said! The weather.com reference does not work for Hernan, since it mentions nothing about the waves. And no, there's no need for an article for Hernan in 1990. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:34, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Once more, please respond to what I said above. Second, copying and pasting is bad. It destroys the edit history, and it is more hassle than it is worse. I'll reiterate. Please don't make an article for Hernan in 1990. The Weather Channel reference is bad for Hernan, as it doesn't explicitly say that waves from Hernan reached the coast of Mexico. Once more, I don't really care about Hernan 08. Instead, please provide a response to the four paragraph plea I gave to you. If not, I'll assume you don't want help, and instead you wish to continue to be disruptive. If that is the case, then you could get blocked again, and if blocked again it would be for a longer period of time. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:49, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously, John 06 being a FA wasn't the point of Hurricanehink's comment. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 19:04, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
