Operas by Claudio Monteverdi[edit]

Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643) composed ten operas, a genre which emerged while he was court musician in Mantua. His first opera, L'Orfeo, was premiered in 1607 and became the first opera still in today's repertoire. For seven opera projects the music is mostly lost. Four of these were completed and performed, while he abandoned the others at some point. Librettos have survived for some of them, and fragments of the music for L'Arianna and Proserpina rapita. Monteverdi composed operas for a theatre in Venice when he was master of music at San Marco there, including Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria in 1640 and L'incoronazione di Poppea in 1643, both of which also remain in the repertoire.

With exception to the List of operas by Claudio Monteverdi by Gerda Arendt and myself, this topic is entirely the work of Brianboulton, who has since passed away. (His birthday is today!) Brian's fabulous contributions resulted in what is currently the only major opera composer whose operatic oeuvre is entirely FAs. Thanks to all who review.   • Complete unconditional support: the articles are serious and well documented, Monteverdi deserves no less being the prime composer marking the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music, notably with its innovative uses of dissonances. Plus he essentially invented the opera format in spite of a small couple of barely earlier pieces that are really more precursors than proper operas.   • Comment: The articles look fantastic, and it's certainly a worthy topic, but I'm confused by the inclusion of L'Arianna; isn't it one of the "lost operas"? If it's here because fragments of the music are extant, the articles seem to indicate that at least a bit of the music also remains from Proserpina rapita.   • @Bryanrutherford0: I had a feeling this would come up – I probably should have addressed it in the blurb above. Basically, L'Arianna is the only lost one where enough even exists to write a full article about – it's also very important for its Lamento, see the third paragraph of the article. Brian himself actually recognizes this on the Lost operas talk page. Anyways, to your point of fragments of music existing for Proserpina rapita as well, this is true, but this opera hardly had the influence of L'Arianna and an article dedicated solely to it would seriously struggle to have more information in it than the section for it already in the Lost operas article.
