Wikipedia:Federal Standard 1037C terms

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following terms are defined in Federal Standard 1037C, which is essentially a dictionary of technical terms promulgated by the United States government, and available to view here: Federal Standard 1037C. This page and its many many subpages are in dire need of attention. The articles linked from here were created in early stages of Wikipedia. They were just copied directly from the Federal publication with only minimal wikification, and were originally just dictionary definitions. Some have expanded as time has passed, and many have the potential to become good articles, or to be merged into new or existing articles. Others clearly can never be more than a dictionary definition, and should be deleted or moved to Wiktionary.

The goal of this project is to work through these articles and determine the best outcome for each. The articles fall into several categories:

Articles that should be made[edit]

Some of these terms should have articles and do not. Please do not copy any definitions from Federal Standard 1037C with attribution to non-Federal sources such as NATO, ITU-T, the Radio Regulations etc. as these are derived from sources not known to be in the public domain. Instead, if a term should have an article, please write your own definitions for these terms in your own words. Look for opportunities to redirect red-linked terms to existing articles where possible.

Articles that should not exist[edit]

Many of these terms have articles but should not, because they can never be more than dictionary definitions. Such articles that have already been made should be moved to Wiktionary. Do this with caution however. In many cases a 1037C article that appears to be purely a definition can be converted into a viable stub with only small changes in wording. All of the 1037C articles started out in dicdef form, since 1037C is a glossary. A substantial number of non-trivial 1037C articles are now incorporated into Wikipedia; insubstantial articles, and articles which contain copyrighted material, should not be copied into Wikipedia. Often several unviable 1037C articles on closely-related terms can be merged together to form a viable stub that covers the related area of telecommunications technology.

Articles that should be kept, but which need work[edit]

Many of these articles are viable stubs (even if they are written in dicdef form). Most have hyperlinks to other articles, but these are often inappropriate. Please check links for correctness, make more links, and rephrase viable articles in encyclopedic form. Add appropriate stub tags and categories. Watch for opportunities to move articles from large categories like category:telecommunications into appropriate subcategories.

Articles that have been expanded[edit]

If an article has been expanded beyond the original 1037C dictionary definition and become a true Wikipedia article, please delete the link to that article from this page, so it will no longer need to be checked.

The template {{FS1037C}} lists the information source for use in References sections, and puts the article in Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from the Federal Standard 1037C.

{{FS1037C MS188}} is for articles that contain content from this standard and/or MIL-STD-188.
