    Request to remove maintenance templates[edit]

Hi, I would greatly appreciate if someone could please review, and if satisfied, remove the maintenance templates on the following two articles: Vertiv and Redlands, Cremorne. I believe I have since improved both articles to meet the required standards. Armenshirazd (talk) 00:48, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Armenshirazd: Hi there! If you've resolved the issues, you may be bold and remove the maintenance templates yourself. If someone else disagrees, they can revert your edit(s), and then you can discuss on the article's talk page. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 03:23, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks GoingBatty, will do. Armenshirazd (talk) 03:48, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Armenshirazd Keep up the good work. You may be interested to read WP:SOLUTION: about a word that still appears ten times in Vertiv. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:45, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Reverts to bad versions[edit]

Perhaps someone could take a look at the editing history of Mark Geragos. A factual error has been restored no less than 25 times, for reasons that have nothing to do with actual content. The page has been repeatedly protected to keep the error in place. Anyone who knows about U.S. politics knows that a pardon would not have been requested on January 20, 2001. Rather, that seems to be the date it was granted, as it was Clinton's last day in office.

Next, take a look at the editing histories of Wikipedia:Guide to addressing bias and Wikipedia:Everything you need to know. Read the explanations given for these changes: [1] [2] Again, all of those reverts have nothing to do with actual content.

Now look at the editing history of Opioid epidemic in the United States. published its rebuttal to the 1980 letter suggests that there was something wrong with the letter itself. That was not the case; the problem was the way it was later misrepresented. The article about that letter makes that fairly clear, though a similar pattern of nonsensical reverts has occurred there also. See this explanation as to why the other version is better. 195.226.122.82 (talk) 03:20, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Football (Soccer) Personal Profile[edit]

Hi, Im writing my first Wikipedia article and i practiced in sandbox first, i created the artcile and using the template function added a personal fotball profile, it had such fields in it as Name, Age, Current club, Height, Weight, Clubs, Apperances and Goals...now im wrtiing the article ready for publishing and i want to add the same template, but its not there when i search for it, any suggestions, thanks ScouseMouse213 (talk) 03:28, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ScouseMouse213: Feel free to post here at the Help desk OR at the Teahouse, but please don't ask the same question in both locations at the same time. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 04:32, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editing an item about the next General Election in the UK[edit]

I would like to add the Party name "Liberal Democrats" and the name of the candidate, "Mark Argent" to the item on the next General Election on the Huntingdon Constituency Page but I'm not sure how to do this.

    The link is:-

    Huntingdon (UK Parliament constituency)

    MalcolmHilton (talk) 12:42, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MalcolmHilton If you navigate to Huntingdon_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Elections and use the source editor you will see how his name is included in the table for the 2019 general election. You can copy the relevant bits to the table above provided you can also add a source that verifies he will be a candidate. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:33, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please be aware that until the calling of the election and the submission of the papers they are prospective parliamentary candidates. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 16:08, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you very much.
    Will do. MalcolmHilton (talk) 16:33, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The problem I now have is that I can't see a way of adding a line to the table in order to include the details I want to add.
Although I can see all the other candidates' details there doesn't seem to be an option to add another one. It looks as though I can overwrite their details but I don't want to risk that - though it may be that the fields that are shown are just intended as examples and are actually editable. Would welcome advice on this point. MalcolmHilton (talk) 18:20, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @MalcolmHilton: See Help:Table. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:11, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MalcolmHilton: I assume you're referring to the "Elections in the 2020s" table in the article. The easiest way to add a row, using the source editor, is to (1) click the "edit" link for the table, (2) copy the whole {{Election box candidate with party link}} template for one of the existing candidates and paste that where you want the new row to appear, either between the templates for two existing candidates or after the candidates but before {{Election box majority}}, (3) replace each field in the template, including the |url= field for a reference, with corresponding information about the new candidate, and (4) preview your edit to make sure you haven't messed anything up. Then click "Publish changes". Deor (talk) 00:37, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    @Sm8900: Have you tried adding the closing tag </span> after your text to be formatted? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:38, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
hi. yes, but the opening tag is at the top of the page, and the closing tag is all at the way at the bottom, after all of the section headings. could that be the problem? Sm8900 (talk) 15:48, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It might be. There is a hierarchy of elements in HTML: <span>s are within <p> elements, for example; so your span will get closed as soon as the parser meets the end of a higher-level element. HTML allows you to add a style= to almost any element, not just a span. ColinFine (talk) 15:56, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ok.. err, lol it's working fine now. maybe I just needed to hit "purge cache"? oopsie. lol thanks! Sm8900 (talk) 16:00, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Victor Schmidt fixed it by using div instead [3] 3 minutes before your post. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:13, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    ok thats great. thanks!! Sm8900 (talk) 18:56, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sm8900: What happens if that font is not available on the device a reader is using? It might be better to use the {{mono}} or {{code}} templates. For example, {{mono|This is in a monospaced font.}} produces This is in a monospaced font. There is alsi a corresponding {{monodiv}} template. Bazza 7 (talk) 20:25, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
wow, ok thats very useful. @Bazza 7, @PrimeHunter, @ColinFine, @Tenryuu, could you please point me to the help pages or manual of style, etc, where all of these items would appear?? I'll try to learn all of these methods. thanks! Sm8900 (talk) 20:35, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sm8900: For various markup templates, see Category:Semantic markup templates and Category:Templates using TemplateStyles. As is often the case, these lists can be quite difficult to follow to find what you are looking for. Asking questions here, as you have discovered, can be productive when solutions prove elusive.
On the manual of style, see MOS:MARKUP, and its excellent advice about KISSing. Bazza 7 (talk) 20:57, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
excellent advice! and also KISS is a new acronym for me! all i knew of was fubar and snafu! lol well done! Sm8900 (talk) 20:59, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are free to choose fonts in your own userspace like User:Sm8900/items tasks. If a reader doesn't have the font then their browser will select another font they do have. Articles shouldn't set fonts per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Text formatting#Font family. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:12, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello can you help me with trying to remove the Notability of this article page, I have already gather many sources but it remains challenging. Jeanneshi (talk) 17:02, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think you mean "remove the notability tag". There are currently no independent reliable sources in the article that provide significant coverage of this publication.
Are you associated with this publication? 331dot (talk) 17:13, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The only way is to establish that the Flame meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability (most student newspapers don't) by showing where several people, wholly unconnected with it, have written at some length about it in reliable sources.
Evaluate every one of your sources against the golden rule: if a soue doesn't meet all the criteria in that, then it does not contribute to establishing notability. ColinFine (talk) 17:41, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is anyone allowed to comment on someone else's post on ANI?[edit]

Yes, there's no requirement to be an admin to respond to ANI posts. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 17:46, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is, however, a requirement to be brief and concise, especially in a venue like ANI where tensions are high and tempers inflamed. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 01:37, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Google summary[edit]

How do I edit the little summary box that a Google search produces at the top right-hand side of the page of Google answers? Historiamanto (talk) 17:51, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You'll have to ask Google; we don't have diddly-squat to do with that or any other of their features, even when they lean heavily upon us for answers. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:57, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. The same feedback facility is also provided on Bing and some other search engines. See also: [4] Victor Schmidt (talk) 19:34, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Change Page Title[edit]

Our organization changed names, but we don't have anyone who can change the title of the wikipedia page that represents our organization. Is there an admin who can help us? 24.214.127.10 (talk) 19:25, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What typically matters is if the title of an article is the most common name for a topic, not necessarily the official or legal name(example, Bill Clinton, not William Jefferson Blythe, his birth name which is a redirect). If you think the new name will be more prominent, you may make a request at Requested Moves. 331dot (talk) 19:37, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not directly an answer, but please note that a Wikipedia article absolutely does not "represent" your organization. It is an encyclopaedia article about your organization, based on what independent sources say about you, not on what you want to say about you. If something happened that caused a lot of negative media attention about your organization, that would and should be covered in the article. ColinFine (talk) 22:01, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Given all this, you you should try to show that the new name has become more common than the old name in multiple reliable sources (i.e., newspapers, etc.. If you can, then add a comment on the article's talk page and point to those sources, and then request a "move", which is what we call the title change. -Arch dude (talk) 22:11, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! For more information about making a request, see WP:Edit requests, or try the WP:Edit Request Wizard. Be sure to disclose your involvement with the organization, as it is a conflict of interest. Thanks for your interest in improving Wikipedia! GoingBatty (talk) 04:51, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Problem regarding archiving a talk page[edit]

I set ClueBot III to archive Talk:Las Vegas Strip using the template found on Help:Archiving a talk page. Even though the earliest thread was from 2005 and there's been about 50 since then,it's put most of them on one page. I assume that it's meant to spread them out to more than one, so I'm not sure what's gone wrong. Could someone have a look? KaraLG84 (talk) 23:01, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@KaraLG84: A new archive will start when it reaches the max size. You specified maxarchsize=75000 and the archive is now at 70199, so not quite big enough to start archive page 2. RudolfRed (talk) 01:06, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: Ah that'll explain it. Is it fine as it is or does it need to be smaller? I'm not sure what the best practises are. I already tried once before so don't want to mess it up any further if necessary.KaraLG84 (talk) 13:39, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    My User Sandbox[edit]

I seem to have renamed or moved (or both) my own User Sandbox, which is not quite what I had in mind. i.e. User:WendlingCrusader/sandbox now redirects to User:WendlingCrusader/Vitry-le-Francois - Wikipedia which is a draft article that still requires work before I submit it.

Meanwhile I have 'lost' my original (empty) sandbox, and cannot begin work on anything else. Can this faux-pas be undone in any way?

This came about because frequently when editing one article, I cross-check information from a second article, only to find more editing is required on that second page. This in turn leads me to a third page, which I find has some editing flaws in it too. And so on.

I will try to give a live example; I looked at the Hawker Hurricane page, and thought there might be accuracy issues regarding which squadrons flew that aircraft type. This in turn took me to a number of RAF squadron pages, including one that clearly needed tidying up, and another that had mis-labelled one of it's pilots. As it happens, that pilot was notable enough to have his own page on Wikipedia, and that page also had issues. Suddenly I've got four editing projects on the go at the same time, and sometimes the same source answers questions on more than one of these pages.

What I was attempting was to create multiple sandboxes, allowing me to work on multiple drafts at the same time, giving me time to assemble all the various references & citations, checking & double-checking them, or waiting for a book to be delivered, or some free-time to visit a library. I didn't want to be rushed into hitting the 'publish' button, simply to allow me to start on the next project before I forgot what had attracted my attention in the first place.

But somewhere along the way I goofed up. So is it possible to go back to one original sandbox, without a redirect? Or better still a small selection of sandboxes, each with their own identifier? And is somebody going to suggest that I should only work on one article at a time, and quietly forget all the peripheral issues I invariably stumble across?

    WendlingCrusader (talk) 00:55, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@WendlingCrusader: You should click on the link to your sandbox as provided, which will take you to the destination page. While there, click on the link in (Redirected from User:WendlingCrusader/sandbox). Once you're there just edit the page and remove the redirect. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:02, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your prompt reply, but I fear it is more complicated than that.
From my user page, clicking on the sandbox link only takes me to this Redirect page
    https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:WendlingCrusader/sandbox&redirect=no
It is headed User:WendlingCrusader/sandbox, but this page is only a stepping stone, not the sandbox itself.
Obviously when I click on the redirect, this second click now takes me to my revised sandbox, which right now is already populated with draft text for an article. So it takes me two clicks to reach a page that functions as my sandbox, but now has a different address.
However, if I manually enter the following into my browser, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:WendlingCrusader/sandbox, it takes me directly to my sandbox, complete with (Redirected from User:WendlingCrusader/sandbox) just as you describe. But I just cannot find a way to edit the page and remove the redirect.
    WendlingCrusader (talk) 03:40, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did it in this edit; you have to edit out the #REDIRECT. The edit links still work on the page. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 04:04, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It may be my failing eyesight, but wherever I searched I just couldn't find the #REDIRECT in order to edit it. Just now I have added (curly brackets)sandbox(curly brackets) to bring that page back even closer towards the original. And now I'm even using coloured text. This is all 'heavy programming' for a novice such as myself.
Many thanks for clearing up my mess. You are a star!
    WendlingCrusader (talk) 12:11, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're very welcome. If you know you're going to be creating draft content in your userspace and don't want to move it later, you could always start it immediately in a new page by typing the title you want in the search field (e.g., User:WendlingCrusader/[draft title here] and searching, you should be brought to a page where one of the links should be in bold and italicised and say Start the User:WendlingCrusader/[draft title here] page. Clicking on that will bring up the editor for that new page. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 12:31, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Excess Wikilink query[edit]

Hello. I have a query about how often a word should be wikilinked in an article. I thought it was once, then not again, but after removing extra links from this article: List of German films of the 1970s they were all put back in again, with the editor saying they were needed to make the actors' names more searchable. The entire article is virtually blue. Just wanting to check if that is correct? I really enjoy removing excess wikilinks :-) BJCHK (talk) 02:12, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

BJCHK, MOS:REPEATLINK says Duplicate linking in stand-alone and embedded lists is permissible if it significantly aids the reader. This is most often the case when the list is presenting information that could just as aptly be formatted in a table, and is expected to be parsed for particular bits of data, not read from top to bottom., so I think the other editor is right. I am sure you can find excess wikilinks elsewhere. TSventon (talk) 02:22, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks @TSventon - I'll keep looking for them BJCHK (talk) 02:24, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BJCHK You could look at Category:Articles with too many wikilinks if you have not already done so. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:35, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull the list is very often unpopulated so I go looking via the randomiser. BJCHK (talk) 06:19, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    List page name?[edit]

I would like to create an article listing, with prose accompaniment, the compositions of a jazz composer; no big deal, as there's a common naming scheme of "List of compositions by x" for these articles. However, I would like to also include a small section on works not composed by the subject, but which are worth mentioning (such as jazz standards popularized by them). What should I title the page? "List of compositions associated with X"? Or keep the normal title because the section would only be a small minority of the list content? Mach61 06:36, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mach61 My suggestion would be to stick to the topic (i.e. compositions) in the list article. If reliable sources have said that other jazz standards were popularized by them, that could go in their biography. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:31, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Individuals without Media Coverage[edit]

Creating Personal Biographies on Wikipedia: Exploring Feasibility for Individuals without Media Coverage

Hello, I'm curious if it's possible for individuals to create their own biography or personal information page on Wikipedia. Specifically, if someone, like myself, lacks media coverage but possesses tangible evidence such as certificates, is it acceptable to create such a page? Ahmed Ghazanfar (talk) 07:12, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ahmed Ghazanfar: Unfortunately not. Wikipedia articles are required to demonstrate that there has been significant coverage of the subject in reliable sources – if that isn't the case, the article can't be written. Tollens (talk) 07:16, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a social media website, directory, or an indiscriminate collection of information. Remsense 07:29, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ahmed Ghazanfar: To be specific, people aren't prohibited from creating articles about themselves, but they're strongly discouraged from doing so due to the reasons laid out in Wikipedia's autobiography guidelines. Said people would also have to find reliable sources that are secondary and independent of the subject to establish that they're wikinotable. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 12:38, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ahmed Ghazanfar Much as it galls me to say it--because I despise both sites--it sounds like what you want is either Facebook or LinkedIn. You don't come into Wikipedia to gain notability; someone writes about you because you already have notability. Uporządnicki (talk) 12:58, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    How do I upload a non-free image[edit]

Hi, I've been trying to upload an image in wikimedia with a non-free license in wikitext format which is this; {{Non-free promotional}} OR {{Non-free biog-pic}} (I've tried both for the "license" part of the upload). But it just keeps saying "The wikitext you entered doesn't contain a valid license template." And then when I tried to get a roundabout at it and added that wikitext and a rationale after it's been uploaded, it automatically gets nominated for a Speedy deletion.

So the question is, How do I upload the non-free image for use in an article? Also, yes, I have checked that the image is adequate Turniner (talk) 07:29, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Replaced transcluded templates with template links. Tollens (talk) 07:32, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Did you do it via "Upload a non-free file" at WP:FUW? And what image for what article? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:47, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No I uploaded it at "Upload Wizard" directly, isn't that where images are supposed to be uploaded?. The article was Kyoya Honda Turniner (talk) 07:58, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Turniner: It appears this relates to commons:File:Kyoya Honda.jpg for the article Kyoya Honda. Wikimedia Commons never allows non-free media files – you were probably looking to upload it here, which you can do via the File Upload Wizard. In this case, it appears you should not do so, however: WP:NFC#UULP lists Pictures of people still alive, groups still active, and buildings still standing; provided that taking a new free picture as a replacement (which is almost always considered possible) would serve the same encyclopedic purpose as the non-free image. This includes non-free promotional images. under the "Unacceptable use" section. Tollens (talk) 07:49, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tollens: provided that taking a new free picture as a replacement (which is almost always considered possible) would serve the same encyclopedic purpose as the non-free image. This includes non-free promotional images.}} under the "Unacceptable use" section. No, there aren't any free images at all, that's why I was trying to upload one so that the article's infobox has the image of the subject, Which was Kyoya Turniner (talk) 07:54, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That isn't what that says, though. It specifically says "taking a new free picture" – if someone was to take a new free picture it would indeed serve the same encyclopedic purpose as the image you uploaded at Commons. Tollens (talk) 08:02, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Except that's not the case, cuz there's NONE. Now how do I upload a non-free image for use, I already have the rationale Turniner (talk) 08:08, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that there are none. That does not change the fact that somebody could photograph this person in the future and release the image under a free license. Images can be uploaded using the File Upload Wizard, but again, do not upload that image. If you do it will be tagged for speedy deletion. Tollens (talk) 08:12, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In short, no non-free pics of living people. Unless they are in jail for the foreseeable future or something like that. If you want, you can try to contact him and suggest he "donates" a pic on Commons. It has to be done right though. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:28, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This reminds me of the endless debates for years at Talk: Kim Jong Un that basically said that North Korea was a hermit kingdom and that no freely licensed or public domain photos of the North Korean leader could possibly be taken, and so a non-free image was an acceptable exception to the rules. And then along came the summit meetings between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump in 2018, documented by several US government photographers, whose work was immediately in the public domain. That uncontested fact obliterated the earlier arguments. Try to fully think through your argument first. Cullen328 (talk) 09:07, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Use of the invisdible to others[edit]

    Hello,

how can I use the translation tool without other people seeing what I have translated?

    Kind regards Sarcelles (talk) 09:56, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sarcelles: I am not entirely certain what you mean. If you mean you want to write a Wikipedia article by translating content, but you don't want to link to the article you translated, that would be a copyright violation and is not possible. If you instead mean that you want the translation used in the article not to have your name attached, that too would be a copyright violation and is also not possible. If you want to translate a Wikipedia article for publication outside of Wikipedia, you must link back to Wikipedia under the terms of Wikipedia's licences, so it will not be possible to prevent others from seeing where the content came from. If you simply mean that you want to translate a Wikipedia article to a different language for your own personal use, you can simply use an online translation tool like Google Translate. Tollens (talk) 10:03, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's about Special:ContentTranslation. I thought a translation in progress was normally invisible to others but I'm not sure. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:17, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to publish the article at once. Google Translate has its drawbacks. How can I do the aforementioned a priori? Sarcelles (talk) 10:18, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sarcelles There is information about the tool at mw:Help:Content translation. I think that mw:Help:Content translation/Publishing shows that you can work on your translation in the tool and it will not be visible to other editors until you click on the publish button. Add redirection page[edit]

Hello. I think Nemo Mettler should be a redirect to Nemo (rapper). But I'm new, so I'd like to ask first:

    - Where should such a question be asked? On the talk page of Nemo (rapper)? PlusPeter (talk) 13:49, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is a specific page at redirects for discussion. If you think that the redirect would be uncontroversial, the talk page would be ok.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 13:54, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the quick and clear answer! The redirect discussion page was exactly such a thing, that I thought might exist. In this case I don't think it's controversial, and it goes along the lines of other artists known by a mononym. E.g. “Cherilyn Sarkisian” to “Cher” and “Paul David Hewson” to “Bono”. PlusPeter (talk) 14:01, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PlusPeter if you want to start with a draft, the page name would be Draft:Nemo Mettler. The page content would be the same as Cherilyn Sarkisian, with "Cher" and "DEFAULTSORT:Sarkisian, Cherilyn" replaced. TSventon (talk) 14:24, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Should I still use the Wizard? I am really sorry about the bother! PlusPeter (talk) 14:26, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can if you want, but I would delete the Wikipedia:Articles for creation header as a redirect does not need an AfC review. It will still be reviewed by Wikipedia:New pages patrol at some point. TSventon (talk) 14:35, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if you create a page by mistake you can tag it with {{Db-author}} and it will be deleted. I have done so with Draft:Redirection to Nemo (rapper). TSventon (talk) 16:03, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, great! Thank you! That's very good to know. PlusPeter (talk) 16:24, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    question re button-style links[edit]

hi. i would like to add a visual button for a link, on some user pages and maybe some project pages. in other words this would be a graphic in the shape of a button which a user would click in order to visit a link. is there a template to use for this? also what would be the code to use? thanks! Sm8900 (talk) 14:39, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sm8900 I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about this happening when reading an article, or editing an article? If it is the latter, there already is a button for adding a link in most editor views, including source editing and visual editing. Cheers, Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 14:57, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One possibility is to use {{Clickable button}}. The bottom of the template page lists others. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:01, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
hi. sorry, no i meant a link to visit an actual url. this is not for articles; it is for a user page, or maybe for a wikiproject page perhaps. Sm8900 (talk) 15:32, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sm8900 All you need to make a URL into a link is to surround it with single square brackets. So this link takes you to google.co.uk. There are some other useful inter-wiki link methods described at Help:Interwiki linking. Incidentally, the template I suggested works for userpages and talkpages and can link to URLs, not just articles. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:39, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    ok, noted. thanks. Sm8900 (talk) 18:42, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

External links to news websites authored by the subject's organization[edit]

I'm in the process of updating this Wikipedia page for my client the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF). My question is regarding External Links I'll be adding. The client has provided me links to several news sites with content authored by TMCF, in some cases could be interpreted as opinion-based. As you can see, the subject is TMCF's president and CEO. Is this type of content appropriate? Thank you! Sigridtx (talk) 15:20, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sigridtx As you are a paid editor, you must under Wikipedia's terms and conditions, declare that as described in the linked page. Then you should make suggestions for additions to the article (including external links) on the Talk Page at Talk:Harry L. Williams so that others who do not have a conflict of interest can decide whether they are appropriate. There is some guidance about links at WP:ELBLP and there is an edit request wizard to help you make the suggestions in a way that they will be noticed by editors who look out for such requests. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:34, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
hi. can I please suggest that perhaps you could practice editing on other pages, before editing for your client? we welcome your ideas and efforts, but we strongly encourage all new editors to get some practice on general editing procedures, before making major edits here.
just to clarify, there is no rule against your ideas above, but in general it is simply a better approach for any new editor to learn the methods here and get a little experience, before embarking upon major edits. so this is just a friendly suggestion . Thanks for sending this. I'll work to make sure I do this. Sigridtx (talk) 21:07, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mann Mann keeps vandalizing my edits in Central Asia. What to do?[edit]

I just started my studies in East Asian studies and was doing edits related Botai Culture in Central Asia page. Then moved on to some edits to Tiele and Book of Sui.

This guy keeps deleting my well referenced edits and just plain historical facts. I also fixed a previous reference that was already there and the reference used was made by Ferdowsi in Shahnameh. I checked the reference and made the edit simpler there. It was a misinformation by non admission of a location and also added more references to a battle, and added more references.

I would usually just discuss and I knew history related pages are more subject to vandalism due to some nationalists. I consider it a pretty serious case of vandalism. So what should I do? I have 0 experience in encountering this. 2001:14BA:44CF:3A00:8910:2DFF:1491:5F81 (talk) 17:38, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You should probably start by reading WP:VANDAL. And then consider how we can possibly respond to your posts when we have absolutely no way of knowing what edits you are referring to. You have no edit history under your current IP. AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:42, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot to sign in. Can you check? TheLastUbykh (talk) 17:44, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You have made no attempt to discuss this with Mann Mann. That's what article talk pages are for. AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:47, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't that the point of using references? I have never had people revert when I used to contribute on Wikipedia if I used them. At most, my edits got "citation needed", not down right reverted TheLastUbykh (talk) 17:50, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is supposed to be a collaborative project. When someone disagrees with an edit, you need to discuss it. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to revert content, even if a reference is provided. I've no idea whether Mann Mann's grounds for reverting were valid or not, but throwing around accusations of vandalism isn't going to resolve anything. AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:57, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
can you check it? the edit he keeps to trying to revert back to refer to Iranian speaking people being majority in ALL of Central Asia when it is the smallest part. In his own reference that only refers to SOUTH of Oxus/ Amu Darya which is the edit I made.
Bro is also just deleting my edits in regarding Botai Culture and Tiele. That's where we literally start studying Central Asia in my studies. WE BARELY discuss anything with Iranians because even if their geography is not really considered in CENTRAL Asia but SOUTH Asia.
I think this is a nationalist Iranian who seems to be camping in that page. TheLastUbykh (talk) 18:03, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unless and until you make an attempt to discuss the matter on the talk page, nothing is going to happen. This is a help desk, where we explain how Wikipedia works. This isn't a dispute resolution page, and nobody is going to get involved until you have made an effort to resolve it yourself. AndyTheGrump (talk) 18:11, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will edit it again then call on his vandalism on talk page I guess.
I just hate this part of Wikipedia, that's barely a history page and there are already nationalists... Thank you for your help, I was just frustrated. TheLastUbykh (talk) 18:14, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rather than casting aspersions about an editor's background, ping the editor at an article's talk page and start discussing. If said discussion becomes untenable, you may wish to take it to dispute resolution. At this rate, this situation is very likely to devolve into edit warring, which generally has unpleasant outcomes for those involved. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:12, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think I will just take it to dispute resolution since I trust in my own references.
Dude already made it to edit warring. It is annoying. I just have no experience with this since I guess I never edited on wikipedia on things other than gaming, so I wasn't sure when to escalate to dispute resolution. TheLastUbykh (talk) 18:27, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TheLastUbykh: Reverting is a normal part of Wikipedia editing. See Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle for some suggestions. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 22:10, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
TheLastUbykh, please read WP:BATTLEGROUND. If you carry on writing from a position of "I'm right and you're wrong", then you are likely to find yourself blocked for disruptive editing even if you are factually correct. ColinFine (talk) 22:22, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Latin or Cryllic character?[edit]

On We (Cyrillic), an anon changed two single characters with this edit w/o source nor explanation. Apparently from the Latin "w" to/from Cyrillic "we". How can I determine what "w" the character is? Unicode info, I suppose. Thank you Adakiko (talk) 21:33, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adakiko, good question. A Wikipedia search of the changed letters shows that the edit changed We (Cyrillic) to W. This was obviously incorrect, so I have reverted the edit. TSventon (talk) 21:49, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TSventon and DoebLoggs: this seems to be an LTA IP-hopper. I've reported a few others in the past. I did a brief, unsuccessful search on wp:SPI. Not sure how to search without turning up every soap-opera sock. Cheers Adakiko (talk) 23:22, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Adakiko, I first noticed this edit where there is a (possibly unintentional) obvious disruption, then I found this other edit where a regular 'x' has been changed to this character 'ӿ'. This couldn't be considered an unintentional change, so I considered the edits made by this user as suspicious. Then I made other reverts where I considered their changes to be dubious. May be someone from WikiProject Linguistics is willing to help determining if this is a vandalic-only user of there is some good basis for their changes. --DoebLoggs (talk) 12:44, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Old Hill is NOT Rowley Regis[edit]

I have an issue with your description of Old Hill. As a resident, we are not considered, and have never considered ourselves, a part of Rowley Regis. While we are close to a lot of towns (Cradley Heath, Rowley Regis, Halesowen, Brierley Hill, Dudley, etc), this is ONLY because of bus routes. Old Hill houses bus stops for: X10, 4M, 3, 18, 19, etc, which is WHY we are considered "part of" our NEIGHBORING towns. We need to keep the name of O L D H I L L alive, someone has to. We have several nail salons as part of Old Hill Market, a bakery AND a Greggs, separately, several hair dressers and barbers, convenience shops, a shop for house pets, a shop for reptilian pets, several groomers for pets, parks, canals, etc. What more do you need Wiki? Old Hill is a TOWN, it is NOT part of other towns, it is still recognised as it's OWN town and should be recognised, as such, on Wikipedia. We are part of the black country, but that doesn't mean that all black country towns are the same.

    Thank you your time chick. 2A02:C7C:3238:9700:E067:4F47:7042:958D (talk) 02:09, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I can see that you're passionate about this, but please understand that Wikipedia reports what reliable published sources say about a matter, which is not always the same as what people on the ground see (see verifiability, not truth). If you have some published sources for what you want the article to say, you are welcome to open a discussion on its talk page, as Hoary suggests. Wikipedia is not the place for RIGHTINGGREATWRONGS ColinFine (talk) 11:42, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is written from reliable sources, not from one's personal point of view. Ordnance Survey calls Old Hill a village rather than a suburban area, and this is in the Old Hill opening sentence. Sandwell Council divides the Borough into six towns, one of which is Rowley Regis and places Old Hill within Rowley Regis, again reflected in the lead. You're more than welcome to discuss this on the Talk page. Rupples (talk) 15:37, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to change the Old Hill lead to reflect the Ordnance Survey source. This would make Old Hill consistent with neighbouring Cradley Heath (town) and Blackheath, West Midlands (town). The leads to both these articles state town in Sandwell and do not also state they are towns in Rowley Regis (Sandwell Council's definition). Rupples (talk) 15:53, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In particular, I've come across the word s–tposter used to describe people, such as in Catturd and Junlper, where it's used in the lead section. (Just so you know, I'm aware of WP:NOTCENSORED)

If at least one source calls them that, it would make sense for it to be attributed. However, if multiple generally reliable sources also ascribe that same label to them, would it be okay for Wikipedia articles to just run with that as though it were a statement of fact (e.g. X is a Y) and not just how some subject-matter experts would describe them, or would that particular description still have to be attributed to those sources? – MrPersonHumanGuy (talk) 15:56, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MrPersonHumanGuy: be bold and use your editorial judgement. If another editor reverts you or adds a {{cn}} template, then add one or more references. If there are lots of references, consider using a footnote that includes all the refs to minimize the clutter. -Arch dude (talk) 16:09, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pigsonthewing: I noticed yesterday that you trimmed my heading. Were you enforcing an unwritten rule, or is there something somewhere about heading length that would apply here? – MrPersonHumanGuy (talk) 11:44, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at the length of the other headings on this page. I was concerned to improve usability and accessibility. Strictly speaking, it's not 'your' heading, BTW. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:28, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Red boundaries on interactive maps[edit]

I've run into two city park articles where in their respective interactive maps, the red boundary for the park is either missing (Shawnee Park) or inaccurate (Seneca Park (Louisville, Kentucky)). What do I do or where do I go to address this? Stefen Towers among the rest! GabGruntwerk 16:53, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have found partial answers to my own question. Apparently these boundaries come from OpenStreetMaps.org. For Shawnee Park, OSM is showing the correct boundary (as far as I know), but it's not showing up in the Wikipedia map. For Seneca Park (and other parks in Louisville), OSM is excluding their golf courses from the boundary, even though the city considers the golf courses features of their respective parks. I have left notes on OSM about the golf course exclusion. Stefen Towers among the rest! GabGruntwerk 19:20, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I discovered that the OSM entry for Shawnee Park was connected to the wrong WikiData page, which was a partial duplicate of the correct one. So, I fixed it on OSM and did a merge on WikiData. Stefen Towers among the rest! GabGruntwerk 20:06, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox gene ortholog outlink not working[edit]

In the article Apolipoprotein AI there's a link to NCBI page in infobox: Orthologs > Human > Entrez > 355, which doesnt work, since its prepended with a dot. It comes from Wikidata, and I don't feel competent to change it. If its not directly Wikipedia issue and you cannot help with that, would you please recommend another way of changing it? InternetowyGołąb (talk) 17:22, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The Entrez link is working for me, and I can't see "335" anywhere in the Wikidata entry d:Q1316030, so I'm not sure what the problem is. (It doesn't appear that anybody's edited the Wikidata entry recently either). ColinFine (talk) 17:56, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hm.. Im dumbfounded then. But if another user doesnt ahve such issue then it maybe was my mistake or something.
just to make sure we are talking about same thing, the 335 is hypertext, for mouse it will be 11806 in same infobox/Orthologs. InternetowyGołąb (talk) 18:19, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ColinFine: Sorry for taking your time, consider solved, I checked both, it was some browser-specific shenenigans. InternetowyGołąb (talk) 18:22, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lisa Lane (place of death discrepancy)[edit]

An ip editor makes the claim that details of the place of death printed in Lisa Lane's NYT obituary are incorrect. What's the best practice here? -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 19:10, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cl3phact0: There might be conflicting info in the different sources. I commented at the talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 19:28, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cl3phact0: : I'm going to offer a different perspective. First, I will note that what was published in the New York Times was an obituary rather than a mere death notice. In other words, it is the 'editorial content" of the newspaper (not to say that it's an editorial, but that it isn't an advertisement). This has the full credibility of the New York Times, and I presume it is listed accordingly on the "perennial sources" list as a reliable source. Fabrickator (talk) 19:52, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Submitting an edit to "Proton Therapy"[edit]

I'd like to add this paragraph but do not want to spend my life trying to do it:

Until recently, there has been no way to physically demonstrate the Bragg Pike phenomenon that is at the heart of this medical procedure to patients. Typically, patients are shown theoretical graphs or cartoons of treatment plans, but no actual demonstration of the counterintuitive nature of proton beam actions. Directed Energy Materials, LLC has patented (US 11,534,945 B2) a process using proton beams to selectively cure liquid resins by applying the Bragg Peak principle. This has been applied in a simulated clinical example as shown in the following photographs. They demonstrate clearly that although the beam of protons travers deep into the clinical model and through liquid resin, the resin is not cured to a solid (concurrently developing a blue-purple color) except in the volume planned for the Bragg Peak.

[I have some very descriptive photographs that I find it impossible to introduce into your system....why don't you just use e-mail....

    Sandbox Query[edit]

    Hi there community

    Sandox image

I am trying to create a new article/page but I seem to have a previous page I created stuck in my Sandbox (Granville Boys High School). Even though the page is live and has its own URL - it shows as my user page. Please see attached image of what I see Sandbox.

    Thank you Wozza369 (talk) 23:49, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wozza369: Edit your sandbox and remove the redirect; in the source editor that's the line with #REDIRECT [[Granville Boys High School]]. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:56, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tenryuu - great thanks for your help that removed it. Still unable to add new page / article though. Wozza369 (talk) 00:22, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Wozza369: I'm afraid I don't understand; you can add whatever new content you're thinking of into the sandbox. If you'd like to draft a new article, I suggest using the article creation wizard. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:49, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Help with a translated article[edit]

Hey there! I just translated an article from the Spanish Wikipedia under a user page (User:LeafGreen/sandbox/ARTMS) and now I want to move it into ARTMS but it already exists as a redirection, where can I find some help with this? I don't wanna lose the page history copy-pasting its content into the existing page. Thanks! LeafGreen (talk) 00:13, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you submit it as a draft via Wikipedia:Articles for creation, the reviewer, when they accept it as an article, will take care of those details for you. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.241.39.117 (talk) 00:24, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Right side box[edit]

How do I find the box on the right side to populate information? Gocoolit (talk) 01:38, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    If you're talking about Infoboxes, there's a bunch. Q T C 01:41, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gocoolit: Hi there! If you're looking for an infobox for User:Gocoolit/sandbox, try {{Infobox officeholder}}. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 03:37, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Gocoolit. Please note that the presence or absence of an infobox will not affect whether a draft is accepted or not. What will affect this, overwhelmingly, is whether or not you have adequate sources to establish notability. At present, you do not: two of the sources are largely interviews, and so no indpendent of her; the other merely mentions her.
Unless you have several sources, each of which is 1) reliably published, 2) wholly indepedent of Walton-Desir, and 3) contains significant coverage of her, then your draft will not be accepted.
If follows that every single moment you spend on doing anything at all other than finding sources which meet the criteria (see WP:42 for a summary) runs the risk of being effort wasted. This is first because if you cannot find the sources, the article will not be accepted in any form; and secondly because if you do find the sources, you may have to rewrite your work because (with limited exceptions) any information not in the independent sources may not go into the article.
Note also that external links are not permitted in the body of an article: they should be removed or converted into citations.
Also, here is my standard advice for people who plunge into trying to create an article when they have only just started editing Wikipedia: If you were starting to learn engineering, would you make your first project to build a car from scratch? If you took up a musical instrument, would you arrange a public recital as the first thing you did? No, you would practise on less demanding projects while you learnt the craft.
I would very strongly advise you that you will save yourself a great deal of frustration and disappointment if you forget about creating a new article for several months, while you gradually learn about how Wikipedia works (and most particularly about Verifiability, reliable sources, and Neutral point of view) by making improvements to some of our six million existing articles.. Biography for a Indian Author/Architect[edit]

I have written a Biography for a Indian Author/Architect and its in my sandbox, how long it will take to publish

I have written a Biography yesterday and published in sandbox,BUT i am not getting that how to publish it to Wikipedia. its still in my sandbox: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Amitesh560093/sandbox

Can anyone help me on this. Amitesh560093 (talk) 02:51, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Amitesh560093: From a quick look, it has no references. See WP:REFB. You should not link to LinkedIn, etc per WP:NOSOCIAL. See also WP:YFA for additional guidance. When it is ready, you can add {{subst:submit}} to the page to add it to the list for review. RudolfRed (talk) 02:56, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the article is about you, read the guidance at WP:AUTO. Autobiographies are strongly discouraged. RudolfRed (talk) 03:01, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Use of Picture[edit]

Can we use Medieval India coin images shown on Wikipedia for our use Angshuman deb (talk) 12:32, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Angshuman deb If you click on an image in a WP-article, like Coinage of India, the new page you arrive at will have information on the "Licensing" of that particular image, see File:Rajuvula_coin_Northern_Satrap_with_Greek_legend_and_Athena_Alkidemos.jpg for an example. Those are the rules that applies to that image. It can be complicated. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:38, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Online Translators?[edit]

If there's no article for a given language, is it ok to use online translators (eg. Google Translate or Glosbe) to translate an article into that language? It can't be much worse than the alternative of just not having the article. O.ALGIERS.o (talk) 14:12, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@O.ALGIERS.o: If someone's using machine translations, they need to verify that everything it processes is accurate and edit out its shortcomings. As the bottom of the section reads:

Wikipedia consensus is that an unedited machine translation, left as a Wikipedia article, is worse than nothing.

    Emphasis in original. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:29, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Computational human phantom article needs updating[edit]

The article entitled Computational human phantom is in need of updating. I first read the page about 9 years ago -- it has not been substantially updated since then. I have content to add to the page about a set of computational phantoms developed mainly in Switzerland. This set of phantoms includes animal phantoms, thus, I propose that the title of the article be changed to Computational phantoms; I have read about how to use the move function to change a title. May I proceed with my proposed changes? PLBounds (talk) 14:22, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
