WikiProject Chicago categorization scheme is used to give a structure and information for Chicago Project members to use as they work with categories that are within the scope of the Chicago Project. The scheme also informs readers and editors about how to use categories that are within the scope of the Chicago Project as they use the category declarations for their encyclopedic articles. Chicago Project members work with content and project categories and readers or general editors work and use mostly the content categories. Project categories provide Chicago Project members, other Wiki Project teams, and automated tools with administrative or maintenance information about namespace pages that are within the scope of the Chicago Project. Content categories provide an alternative navigation option that helps readers to find encyclopedic articles or group of articles related to Chicago or the Chicago metropolitan area.

This project page describes:

  1. How Category pages are established— the conventions, methods, and processes.
  2. How Categories are assigned to main namespace pages.
  3. How Category declarations on talk pages are used by bots for automated processes and how they may be used by Project Team members, readers and editors.
  4. How the Category pages and various Category page-based reports are checked and validated by Project members.


Categorization guidelines[edit]

The Chicago WikiProject's style of categorization is meant to support the philosophy of the project and provide a meaningful grouping of any Chicago and Chicago metropolitan area related topics, so that readers can perform their searches using the categories. The following guidelines should be considered when assigning or creating categories within the project:

Namespace designation[edit]

This Project page will follow the standard naming scheme when mentioning namespaces. Basic namespaces will always be a single capitalized word (e.g., Main, User, Wikipedia, etc.) Unlike the standard naming scheme, references to talk namespaces will always be made up of two words - the Basic name plus a capitalized "Talk" (e.g., Talk, User Talk, Wikipedia Talk, etc.).

Specific types of Main pages will always be followed by the type of Main page with the first letter capitalized (e.g., Main Disambiguation, Main List, etc.).

Category list[edit]

All Category pages have a list function. If the emphasis is on looking at the list function of a Category page, the reference to the Category page will include the term "category list".

Category declaration[edit]

Category declaration is the full name of a Category page that is found at the bottom of namespace pages. These declarations mean that the page is assigned to that particular category. By this assignment the page can be found by the category list within the Category page to which it is assigned. For example, the page on Chicago, one of its category declarations is " :Category:Chicago " and the associated talk page at Talk:Chicago has a category declaration of " :Category:B-Class Chicago articles ".

Methods for assigning categories[edit]

Two methods are used for assigning categories to pages:

1. Direct - The category declaration is manually assigned and added to the bottom of a Basic namespace page.

2. Template Assigned - The category is automatically assigned by placing the project banner template within a namespace talk page. The optional parameters, such as class, importance, etc., are decided by the editor that is placing the {{ChicagoWikiProject}} project banner template on an article or non-article's talk page.

Template Add Assigned - Term used for Chicago Project-wide effecting assignment of category declarations that occur at the time a Chicago Project template (PSP010s) is added to a page. Templates can emulate manual edits which includes the setting of category declarations. The use of personal templates is not discussed in this article.
Class Assigned - This is a term for the process whereby the category is set by the value given within the Class field of the Chicago Project Banner. It is part of the process described in Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Using the bot.
Using the talk page of the associated Category Basic namespace page (PSC014), a category is indirectly assigned with the Class assessment parameter of the Chicago Project Banner. The category declaration that is assigned to the page is automatically created by the template and is based on the value given for the Class parameter of the template. If the Banner is there, verify that the correct Class is used - List, Category, Disambig, File, Image, Portal, Project, Redirect, or Template. If the Chicago Project banner is not within the talk page, it can be added using the Chicago Project banner template with the correct Class parameter as given above. There are restrictions (e.g., Class=Template can only be used within the Template Talk namespace) and different processes to follow for each of the types.

Use of mnemonics[edit]

The mnemonics are meant to be used when the repetitive use of the long name or descrition of a specific type of page would encumber the readability. The use of mnemonics should be avoided within overview sections. Wherever the mnemonic was not used for awhile (e.g., two or three screens) the full name or defenition of the mnemonic should again be given, especially if it is to be used within forthcoming paragraphs.

Terms only used within this Project page[edit]

The term Article (with the first letter capitalized) will always refer to encyclopedic pages within the Basic Main namespace. Whereas article (with the first letter in lower case) will always be used as it is commonly used by non-Wikipedians, to refer to any Basic namespace page, excluding those within the Main namespace, that are prose based versus programming code or images, and the subject of the document is non-encyclopedic.

Two terms, specific to only this Project page, are used to help describe the processes used within the Chicago Project classification scheme.

  • Project Scope Page (PSP) - A namespace page that is within the scope of the Chicago Project. PSPs are a subset of pages of all the pages within Wikipedia. PSPs may be any page other than Category and Category Talk pages, which are Project Scope Category (PSC) pages. (see below)
The numbers after the PSP indicate the namespace within which they can be found (e.g., PSP000 can be found in the Main namespace and PSP014 can be found within the Category Basic namespace. See Table #1 for the association of PSP and PSCs with their namespace.
The letter after a PSP000 or PSP001 represents the type of article it is. Articles are only used within the Main namespace from within which all the encyclopedic pages can be found. The four types of articles and their PSP designation are:
PSP000A - Article page within which is written the narrative covering notable and important topics about people, animals, objects, substances, states, events and feelings. These are the encyclopedic pages.
PSP001A - Talk page within which all discussions about the associated PSP000A take place. For each PSP000A there is a corresponding PSP001A. PSP001A is not encyclopedic.
PSP000L - List page within which (Development note: Continue with giving the PSP000x). These may be encyclopedic if there is encyclopedic narrative about the pages provided in the list.
PSP001L - Talk page within which all discussions about the associated PSP000L takes place. For each PSP000L there is a corresponding PSP001L. PSP001L is not encyclopedic.
PSP000D - Disambiguation page within which are given alternative dissimilar Articles or Lists that use the same name. They are used for reader navigational purposes. These are not encyclopedic pages.
PSP001D - Talk page within which all discussions about the associated PSP000D takes place. For each PSP000D there is a corresponding PSP001D. PSP001D is not encyclopedic.
PSP000R - Redirect page within which is code for its relevant target page for automatically routing or linking to a target Article. Used to assign different names for the same article. These are not encyclopedic pages.
PSP001R - Talk page within which all discussions about the associated PSP000R takes place. For each PSP000R there is a corresponding PSP001R. PSP001R is not encyclopedic.
  • Project Scope Category (PSC) - Category pages and the associated category declarations by which namespace pages are designated as PSPs.
Project Scope Categories (PSCs) are Category pages and the associated category declarations that are within the scope of the Chicago Project. These PSCs are placed within namespace pages by editors to designate that namespace page as being within the scope of the Chicago Project. PSCs are used to designate Articles, Lists, Disambiguations, User pages (for project members), Project pages, Portal pages, Image pages (aka File pages), Templates, and Categories. Various approaches are used to assign specific PSCs to different namespace pages. Some namespace pages will never have a PSP because they are out of scope for the Chicago Project. See the table for an overview of which PSP or PSC is used with a namespace and which namespaces are never to be assigned a PSP.

Categorization scheme[edit]

The Chicago Project categorization scheme is meant to accommodate the general reader and those desiring to be editors. In addition, the scheme is meant to meet the needs of the Chicago Project members as they go about performing administrative and maintenance tasks in support of the readers and editors.

The categorization feature of Wikipedia's software allows and encourages users to develop their own categorization scheme. This beneficial element of the categorization feature sets up an environment within which multiple categorization schemes must coexist and not interfere with each other. Among all the category schemes one needs to be developed and maintained by the Chicago Project members so that they can fulfill the categorization aspect of the Chicago Projects mission. That one categorization scheme among the many is the Core Categorization Scheme which needs to be understood, developed, and documented. The other schemes are the Incidental Categorization Schemes and may not be clearly understood by other readers or project members and they are probably not documented other than through the use of cmboxes (see #Effective and ineffective PSC014s ). Incidental Categorization Schemes are a vital component of the categorization feature of Wikipedia and expresses the philosophy of users' freedom to define meaningful categories.

Project Scope Categories[edit]

Overview of Project Scope Categories (PSCs)[edit]

Project Scope Categories are the categories whose category declarations within any namespace page shows that the page is within the scope of the Chicago Project.

Project Scope Categories must always have within the talk page the Chicago Banner. Simply placing a Chicago Banner within the category talk page will automatically set the Class assessment parameter to "Category" and will also assign the correct category declarations for the talk page. There are no additional category declarations to add to the talk page - simply add the Chicago Banner.

Project Scope Categories fall within two groups. They are either a content category or a project (or project tracking) category. Content categories are assigned exclusively to encyclopedic basic pages and are meant to be used by readers/editors to find articles. Tracking categories are meant to be used by Chicago Project members to view status, track conditions of articles, or see articles that need attention.

Project Scope Category basic pages should always have either the Category:WikiProject Chicago tracking categories or the Category:WikiProject Chicago content categories category declarations. They may have others too.


Editors who are not Chicago Project members are not prohibited from either creating or using PSCs. It is up to the Chicago Project members to validate the proper use of PSCs. This is done via the tracking categories.

PSC014 - Category page PSCs[edit]

PSC014 pages are pages within the Basic Category namespace where all the category pages are stored. PSC014s are the category declarations by which namespace pages, including Category, are designated as being within the scope of the Chicago Project.

Within Basic pages, the direct method for assigning category declarations is used. Using the standard categorization method, PSC014 category declarations are placed at the end of a page before any Stub templates. The PSC014 Category declaration is the name of the PSC014 prefixed with "Category:" and set within double brackets (e.g., [[Category:Chicago]]).

PSC014s are not used exclusively by the Chicago Project. PSC014s may be used within other WikiProjects or be found within non-Chicago project related parent categories. Other WikiProjects will use their own categorization.

The category declarations for PSC014s are used in either the Basic pages or Talk pages. Content PSC014s that are exclusively meant to be used within the Main namespace. Project category declarations can be assigned within talk pages or within Basic pages. The Talk page is used mostly for meeting the needs of the general editors or Chicago Project members.

Effective and ineffective PSC014s[edit]

The elements that define an effective category depends on the fundamental type of the category. It will either be a content category or a project category. There are various types of Project Categories with each having a subtle change in one of the elements that makes it effective.

The different types of Project Categories are: Tracking by which the pages are grouped based on the condition or status of the pages (e.g., stub, assessment level) or type of pages (e.g., content, template, portal); Project Information that groups project specific pages about policy, procedures, or general discussions; and, Article Maintenance such as requests for attention.

Various reports and processes, including bots, depend on category information that is within the Basic and Talk pages. The effectiveness of a category is based on the availability of information within the Basic and Talk pages.

Effective Content Categories have the following elements ( for an example see Category:Library associations based in Chicago ):

Within the Basic page should be the following:

  • The Category:WikiProject Chicago content categories category declaration. This places the category within a category where all the available content categories are listed.
  • The Category:Chicago should be added if the article is related to the City of Chicago, Illinois or the Category:Chicago metropolitan area category should be added if the article is related to the Chicagoland area but not about the City of Chicago. This will cause the category to become a distinguished category within either Chicago or Chicago metropolitan area.
  • At least one other PSC014 content category is assigned within the Basic page. This places the category within a grouping of categories that is specific to the content of the articles assigned to the category.
  • A standard category message box is used to give the following information:
(1) It informs readers that the category is a list category.
(2) Gives instructions on how to place items into the category list.
(3) Explains the types of articles that are to be placed into the list.
(4) Further explains the types of articles to place into it by giving information or examples of what not to include within the list.
(5) Using a "See also" convention, directs users to the Chicago Project as a principal project that is associated with the category. Note that other projects may also be associated with the category.

Within the talk page should be the following:

  • The Chicago Banner. With the use of the Chicago Banner a set of category declarations are automatically added to the talk page. Do not manually add any category declarations.


Effective Project Tracking Categories have the following elements ( for an example see Category:WikiProject Chicago tracking categories ):

Within the Basic page should be the following:

(1) It informs readers that the category is a Project Tracking category.
(2) Gives instructions on how to place items into the category list.
(3) Explains the types of pages that are to be placed into the list.
(4) Further explains the types of pages to place into it by giving information or examples of what not to include within the list.

Within the talk page should be the following:

  • The Chicago Banner. With the use of the Chicago Banner a set of category declarations are automatically added to the talk page. Do not manually add any category declarations.

Ineffective PSC014s are those that have one or more of the above elements missing. There will not be a warning if one or more of the above are missing. However, at worst bots may not run properly and at best ineffective categories will missinform readers or misrepresent the use of the category.

Establishing a PSC014 (A category that is used to designate pages as being within the scope of the Chicago Project)[edit]
  • To convert existing Category pages: use the Template Set process with the {{ChicagoWikiProject}} tag. PSC014s are actually created by setting the {{ChicagoWikiProject}} tag within the talk page of the category that is being converted into a PSC014 (a category page and its category declaration that is within the scope of the Chicago Project). By setting the Chicago Project banner the template will also automatically set within the talk page three category declarations: Category:Category-Class Chicago articles, Category:NA-importance Chicago articles, and Category:WikiProject Chicago articles. There is nothing else for the editor to do. At this point all pages that were assigned to the category declaration that is now a PSC014 have now become a PSP (pages that are within the scope of the Chicago Project). The new PSC014's category declaration is now available to assign to additional pages converting them into PSPs.

To create a new PSC014 page: follow the procedure for creating a new page within the Category namespace and then use the "convert" process given above until all elements of a fully Effective PSC is created. The elements of a fully effective PSC are:

Listing PSC014s[edit]

All PSC014s are found by inference, (i.e., the Category Talk Page - PSC015 - is actually listed) within a category list called ":Category:Category-Class Chicago articles" (this is the C4 category declaration). To see a list of PSC014s simply go to Category:Category-Class Chicago articles (hint: click on it if you see it at the bottom of a Talk page). The name of the Talk page (the PSP015) for each PSC014 is given in alphabetical order.

PSC014s - Category lists[edit]

(Development note: Those that are not existing pages will need to be found under a different name and moved to conform to naming convention - :category:"type"-Class Chicago articles. If they don't exist, they need to be created. The standard naming convention for these category list categories is needed so future editors will know how to find them.)

Categories Required for Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Bot

    • Category:Unassessed Chicago articles - PSP001 Unassessed Talk pages. (Note: the article's Talk page has only the project banner template included, without any class or importance optional parameters added to it, requires manual or bot-assisted addition of the optional parameters.)


Categories required for Chicago Project Admin/Management

  • Category:WikiProject Chicago - Direct category declaration assigned. Note: Parent category for all Chicago Project related pages, sub-categories will include Talk pages only and are bot assigned.
  • Category:Chicago - Direct category declaration assigned. Note: Parent category for all Main namespace Chicago related articles. Does not include associated articles' talk pages. All PSP000 Articles related to the City of Chicago must have this category declaration and may have other PSP014s as deemed necessary.
  • Category:Chicago metropolitan area - Direct category declaration assigned. Note: Parent category for all Main namespace Chicagoland (excluding Chicago proper) related articles. All PSP000 Articles related to the Chicago metropolitan area, but not to City of Chicago, must have this category declaration and may have other PSP014s as deemed necessary.

Project Scope Pages - PSPs[edit]

Overview of PSPs[edit]

Project Scope Page is any namespace page that is assigned to the Chicago Project. In another words, they are within the scope of the Chicago Project.

To be an effective PSP there has to be within the basic page at least one category declaration that is within the scope of the Chicago Project and it must have the Chicago Banner within its talk page.

Encyclopedic pages must always have either the Category:Chicago or the Category:Chicago metropolitan area category declarations. The page about using categories for encyclopedic articles gives information to the general users/editors about using Chicago Project categories for their articles.

Talk page category declarations are always handled by the Chicago Banner. There are no other project related category declarations to add to the talk pages beyond those added by the Banner. Always use the Banner to change category declarations within talk pages.

All non-encyclopedic basic pages must at least have the Category:WikiProject Chicago category declaration. Other project related category declarations that place them into tracking or project category groups should be added.

PSP000 - Main page PSPs[edit]

In the Main namespace, there are four types of pages available to the Chicago Project for assignment of PSCs. These pages may be Articles, Disambigutaions, Redirects, or Lists.

All PSP000 Article pages must have either the Category:Chicago or the Category:Chicago metropolitan area. They may have others PSCs, but they must have either of the above.

  • PSP000 Article pages: (e.g., Richard M. Daley) are designated as pages within the scope of the Chicago Project by having at least one PSC014 Article category declaration assigned to it. Assign as many PSC014 Article category declarations as are appropriate for the article. For instructions on listing the PSC014 Article article declarations, see the section on Listing PSC014s. (Development note: Actually, the assignable PSC014 Article category declarations are a subset of all PSC014 because not all PSC014s are meant to be used with Articles. Is there such a subset list - might the PSP015 for Quality assessments work?)
    • All associated PSP001 Article Talk pages should have a Quality assessment value for the Class assessment parameter within the Chicago Project banner (i.e., class=Stub, Start, List, Disambig, etc.)
  • PSP000 List pages: (e.g., List of festivals in Chicago) are designated as pages within the scope of the Chicago Project by having at least one PSC014 List category declarion assigned to it. Assign as many PSC014 List category declarations as are appropriate for the List. For instructions on listing the PSC014s see the section on Listing PSC014s.
  • PSP000 Disambiguation pages: (e.g., Chicago (disambiguation)) get a PSP001 - Disambiguation PSP (see section on assigning PSP001s).
  • PSP000 Redirect pages: (e.g., Chi town) are assigned PSC014s only in specific cases - when the PSC014 of the redirect page has to be different from the target page. Once it is determined that a redirect page does need a category, if it is appropriate, assign a PSC014 to the redirect page which must be different from the one assigned to the target page. If it seems that the same PSC014 is used for both the redirect page and the target page, remove the PSC014 from the redirect page.

List of PSP000s assigned to a specific PSC014[edit]

To see all the Main Articles, Main Redirects, and Main Disambiguation assigned to a specific PSC014, from within the Category:Category-Class Chicago articles category list, simply click on the associated PSC015 (Note - each PSC014 has an associated PSC015) (e.g., see the PSC015 for Addison, Illinois and then go to the Category Page (i.e., to the associated PSC014). Or, simply go to the PSC014 directly (e.g., Category:Addison, Illinois.

List of PSP000s assigned to a specific PSP000 Lists[edit]

To see all the PSP000 pages assigned to a specific PSP000 List page, from within the Category:List-Class Chicago articles category list, click on the associated PSP001 List page (Note: each PSP000 List page has an associated PSP001 List page) (e.g., see the PSP001 for "List of festivals in Chicago" and then go to the Article page (i.e., to the associated PSP000 List page). Or, simply go to the PSP000 List page directly (e.g., List of festivals in Chicago. Then, within the PSP000 List page ( [[e.g., List of festivals in Chicago ) there will be the embedded list of PSP000s. Creating a PSP001D[edit]

Within the Talk namespace page of the Main disabiguation page place the Chicago Banner and set within it the "Disambig" value for the Class assessment parameter (hint: if the banner is not there, copy and paste the following {{ChicagoWikiProject|class=Disambig}} onto the Talk page.)

To validate that the disambiguation page is now a PSP001 for the Project, look at the bottom of the disambiguation Talk page and notice that it is now assigned the [[Category:Disambig-Class Chicago articles]] category declaraion. The disambiguation page that was assigned the PSP001 is now designated as being within the scope of the Chicago Project. Reminder - set all applicable PSC014s within the Main namespace disabiguation page.

Listing PSP000Ds[edit]

All PSP000 Disabiguation pages are found by inference (i.e., the PSP001 is actually listed) within a category list called ":Category:Disambig-Class Chicago articles". "Files" may contain diagrams or pictues. File pages are where the Chicago Project uploaded files and pictures are stored. All PSP006s have within their talk page (the PSP007)the Chicago Project Banner which automatically creates the correct category declarations within the talk page. These files and pictures are items to which Chicago Project pages link.

Converting - Within the associated PSC015 page place the Chicago Banner and set within it the "Category" value for the Class assessment parameter (hint: copy and paste the following {{ChicagoWikiProject|class=Category|importance=NA}} onto the PSP015 page).

To validate that the category is now a PSC015 for the Project, look at the bottom of the Category Talk page and notice that it is now assigned the [[Category:Category-Class Chicago articles]] category declaration. All the PSP000 pages, which are given within the category list PSC014 are now designated as being within the scope of the Chicago Project.

Listing PSP15s[edit]

All PSC015s are found within the category list called Category:Category-Class Chicago articles (this is the C4 category declaration).

CHIBOTCATS is to contain all the WikiProject Chicago categories ( PSC014s ).

CHIBOTSCATS is used by various bots as indicated within the section on #Bots use of Project categories.

Bots use of Project categories[edit]

These bots use Project category codes for a variety of tasks or provide Project category related reports.

Xenobot Mk V[edit]

  • Tasks:
    • Adds the Chicago Project banner to the talk pages that should, but do not have it. The banner is added when the PSP000 has at least one PSC014 from within wp:CHIBOTCATS and it does not have a banner within the Talk.
Issues about a specific article being within the scope of the Chicago Project can be resolved by place the following within the Talk page of the article:
{{Bots|deny=Xenobot Mk V}} - when setting this template be sure to leave a summary message stating why it was set. A link within the summary to where discussions were held would be helpful.


  • Notes:
    • Extensive use of wp:CHIBOTCATS. Depends on an accurate list in order to provide accurate reports.
    • Has exception reports that may be used to reconcile wp:CHIBOTCATS records. Those that may need to be added or those that need to be removed.

WP Ver 1.0 Bot[edit]

Runs every two to three days and creates various reports for the Chicago Project and creaes various reports for the WP Ver 1.0 Project.
