[edit] Proposing new stub types - procedure

Important: If you wish to propose the creation of a stub ARTICLE you've come to the wrong place. If you don't have a username yourself, please go to WP:AFC for proposing a new article. If you already have a username, you can create the article yourself. If you don't know how, add {{Helpme}} to your user talk page to request help from other editors. This page only deals with stub TEMPLATES and CATEGORIES; we cannot help you with creating articles.

Proposing new stub types
If you wish to propose a new stub category and template, please follow these procedures:
  1. Check at Category:Stub categories to make sure that your proposed new stub does not already exist.
  2. List it at the top of the current month's section, under a header, like the ones shown (if any). Sign it with a datestamp (~~~~).
    • Please bear in mind that a stub category isn't about the importance or notability of the topic!
  3. Find a good number[1] of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template. Each of these articles can be:
    • currently marked with {{stub}};
    • currently marked with another type of stub tag (in which case you should justify why your tag is better for the article than the current one);
    • a stub whose categorisation is highly ambiguous or questionable;
    • not marked as a stub.
  4. Others may do the same, if they so desire.
  5. 5 days after listing it here, if there is general approval or no objection, go ahead and create the new category and template following the format on Wikipedia:Stub. List the new stub type on the stub types list in an appropriate section. If consensus is not clear, or discussion is still ongoing, the proposal will remain open until consensus can be reached.
  6. If you wish to propose a stub type which does not currently have 60 articles that could use it, you may propose an upmerged template in a similar way. An upmerged template would feed into currently existing stub categories until such time that there are enough stubs for a separate stub category. At that point a category for it may be separately proposed.

DO NOT place a proposal here for any stub type which has already been created and is being discussed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries or Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. The proposal page is only for stub types that have not yet been created, and it is better to keep any discussion of such stub types in one place rather than splitting it between different pages.

^ . Good number means about 60 articles or more, or 30 or more if it is the primary stub type of a WikiProject, though this figure may vary from case to case.

[edit] "Speedy creation"

A stub type may be proposed for "speedy creation" if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • S1 - the creation of a category for which an approved upmerged template already exists and is now in use on more than 60 articles.
  • S2 - the creation of an upmerged national-level template for a subject in which other such national-level templates currently exist (e.g., X-bio-stub, X-hist-stub, or X-geo-stub, where X is the name of an internationally widely recognised country) or other instances where a clearly established pattern of similar subtypes exists. The proposed topic may not be controversial in scope.

List speedy creation proposals in the same proposal listings as normal stub proposals below.

[edit] Proposals, January 2009

If you create a stub type, please be sure to add it to the list of stub types.

[edit] NEW PROPOSALS

[edit] Cat:Federated States of Micronesia geography stubs

{{Micronesia-geo-stub}} is now used on 60 articles. Speediable... Grutness...wha? 01:05, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Orienteering

Per this SFD discussion, the idea of a basic stub type for orienteering would seem to be a useful idea.

CatScan suggests it will very easily reach threshold (30, given that there's a Wikiproject), so a speediable category would make sense. There is also very good cause for a separate {{Orienteering-bio-stub}} and Cat:Orienteering biography stubs, with some 300 eligible stubs! Grutness...wha? 23:50, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

  • I think that Finland, Norway and Sweden are close enough for -bio- templates, categories if they are over 60. I'm Waacstats not 149.254.224.145 (talk) 15:07, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:Africa rail stubs

{{Africa-rail-stub}} has gone over 60 thanks to a host of creations by Dr. Blofeld, so recommend a speedy creation of the category.--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 20:18, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] {{Wałcz-geo-stub}}

Already used on 59 articles despite being a red link, propose we speedy the template, but do we upmerge to Cat:West Pomeranian geography stubs or give it it's own category. Waacstats (talk) 17:01, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Speedy the template. 59's borderline - I'm happy either way - though if kotbot hasn't made 60, it may be difficult to get a 60th! Grutness...wha? 22:56, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] ...of all places...

Let's start the year with a surprising one. Believe it or not, {{Pitcairn-stub}} and {{Pitcairn-geo-stub}} are, between them, used on 60 articles. About time for a speedily created Cat:Pitcairn Islands stubs! Grutness...wha? 05:41, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Would have been a nice to place to have started the new year rather than here. By the way - speedy support. Waacstats (talk) 16:43, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Proposals, December 2008

If you create a stub type, please be sure to add it to the list of stub types.

[edit] {{SouthAfrica-book-stub}}

Since {{SouthAfrica-media-stub}} has been deleted, a number of books need to be stub sorted. However, we have yet to sort books by country of origin and I don't know how wise this is. What should we do?--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 23:01, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

  • I would rather not go down that road...They should be categorized by country of origin but stubbed by genre. We do have Japan-lit-stub and India-lit-stub, but those are really for the culture's literature as a whole. I'll go look round the book stubs and see what I can do. Her Pegship (tis herself) 01:18, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
  • I'm also wary of it - it would be easy for people to confuse SouthAfrica-book-stub as being for books about SA, in which case we're likely to end up with a mess in the category. Grutness...wha? 04:23, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] LGBT split

There are now over 800 articles in Cat:LGBT stubs. I'd like to propose the following templates, splitting out separate categories for any which reach threshold:

Given the number of articles on civil unions and civil rights by country, the law one should easily reach 60, as should the one for organisations. The others may not, though there are a considerable number of books in the main category. I've mentioned this proposal at WP:LGBT, BTW (or, FWIW, will ASAP, OK? :) Grutness...wha? 22:13, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Those sound like reasonable sub-cats. I think there should also be a {{LGBT-bio-stub}} for stub biographies of LGBT people. (I had created such a category, but because of opposition thereto, it was never populated. Can we do so?) Aleta Sing 22:49, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
I oppose a LGBT-bio-stub on the basis that it is far too general. The activist-stub is for people notable directly because of their LGBT status. If we have a LGBT-bio-stub, every LGBT person could be stubbed such, making it a huge mess.--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 22:55, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
  • And I would second a {{LGBT-novel-stub}} rather than {{LGBT-book-stub}}, as I don't there are enough non-fiction books on sexuality in general for a separate stub type, let alone on lgbt issues. Her Pegship (tis herself) 01:20, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
    • {{LGBT-novel-stub}} does make more sense than trying to put fiction and non-fiction works together, and they do seem to be mainly novels. I agree with Thomas, BTW - a simple bio-stub is likely to be too much of a catch-all to really be that useful. Grutness...wha? 01:23, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Support proposal, with no preference between "book" and "novel". I agree that a bio stub has enough potential problems that it should not be included in this split. --Alynna (talk) 20:45, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Support; Especially bio-stub; Either both "book" and "novel" as they are different WikiProjects or the parent project "Literature". -- Mjquin_id (talk) 01:35, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:European figure skating biography stubs

There are currently 630 articles in this category, being fed in by 7 stub templates (France, UK, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine, general Europe). I propose giving each country template its own category (Cat:French figure skating biography stubs, Cat:British figure skating biography stubs, Cat:Austrian figure skating biography stubs, Cat:German figure skating biography stubs, Cat:Swiss figure skating biography stubs, Cat:Ukrainian figure skating biography stubs). This wouldn't require any new stub types. Kolindigo (talk) 20:20, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

  • Oppose all but one. It is standard practice to have multiple country-level templates feeding one category where the number of stubs used by each template is below threshold. In this case, only one of the thresholds has reached the 60-stub threshold level (though a couple of others are close) - for that reason I'd support Cat:United Kingdom figure skating biography stubs (which is the standard name for UK-related categories. BTW, though not a "full" stub type, a category is still regarded as a partial stub type, especially when a template has previously been made in an upmerged form. Grutness...wha? 21:33, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
    • Comment I didn't realize most were lower than the threshold. Oops. :) Kolindigo (talk) 20:29, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
      • They are at the moment, though there may be some undersorting from the Country-sport-bio-stub types (checking the Whatlinkshere link in the toolbox for each template lets you see how many stubs currently use each one). Grutness...wha? 23:22, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:Organizational Communication stubs

There are currently no stubs related to organizational communication and various facets related to organizational communication. I'm wanting to change this.—Preceding unsigned comment added by JasonSWrench (talkcontribs)

Not sure I quite understand - if there are no stubs for it, why would you need a template or category? There is also no permanent category relating to Cat:Organizational communication. There is an Cat:Organizational theory, but it's not really big enough for its own stub type - and it's a pretty vague area that overlaps with several existing stub types. Perhaps something like a {{Humanresources-stub}} might be a more effective stub type? Grutness...wha? 10:27, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Possible {{BritishRaj-bio-stub}} and {{BritishRaj-politician-stub}}

Seems to be a great deal of stubs created on British officers/politicians who lived under the British Raj. At present the creator is placing them in "people stubs". As India politician stub or British politician stub might not be so specific would anybody approve of an idea for a template for governors or British people who spent much of their life in British India? The Bald One White cat 17:09, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Strongly Support this idea. We can have a seperate stub-template for UK Governors, etc of British India.... for {{Administrators of provinces in British India}}. There are too. many Governors. KensplanetTalkContributions 17:17, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Split of Cat:Russia stubs

Coming close to 800. Believe it or not we have over 60 articles on diplomatic missions in Russia. catscan Do we want to create a template/category for this if so what do we call it and what if any other stub parents do we give it? Waacstats (talk) 14:09, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

  • I'd be open to a {{Russia-embassy-stub}} covering "embassies and other diplomatic missions", probably with Cat:Russia(n) diplomatic mission stubs as its target, although I can see a case being made for different names so as to extend it somehow to include all the "Foo-Russian relations" stubs, too. The Cat:Russia stubs base cat probably could do with some sorting, BTW, so that 800 is probably artificially high - there seem to be a fair few geo and bio types in there. Grutness...wha? 23:52, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
    • I agree with you on the undersorting but thought I'd ask about this as alot of articles are obviously embassies. The problem with the names suggested is that I would take that as meaning embassies of Russia i.e Russian embassy in the US rather than foreign embassies in Russia ie US embassy in Russia. The perm cat would be Cat:Diplomatic missions in Russia. Waacstats (talk) 12:10, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
      • On a larger note, I'd like to see a stub created for ALL bilateral relations stubs. This type of article has grown immensely over the past 6 months and think grouping them with a specific stub rather than {{politics-stub}} would be quite useful. Perhaps sort by country?--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 23:29, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
        • One possible solution would be to ignore whether it's an embassy of a country or an embassy in a country and to make both Cat:Diplomatic missions in Russia and Cat:Diplomatic missions of Russia joint parents. It's a bit of a fudge and would mean constantly double-stubbing, but it would mean that the numbers would be better for a lot of countries. It would also make sense that Fooian embassy in Bar would have both a foo-stub and a bar-stub template. Some possible naming options would be -embassy-, -diplomacy-, -diplomaticmission-, and foreignrelations-. I suspect the third and fourth are too wordy, and it would largely depend on the intended scope between the first two. Grutness...wha? 00:12, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
