Last One Out - Close the Door.[edit]

I would like to express my most sincere appreciation to the many who have followed our Croatan students over the years, lending their support to this educational assignment. Few gifts are more valuable than the sacrifice of time. The hours invested in guiding students through the trials and tribulations of Wikipedia have served as the primary motivator. Without your encouragement, feedback and collaboration, there is little question that this would have been an epic fail. I truly hope, as the project matured, that we managed to strike a balance between collaboration and exploitation and those that assisted felt the same level of excitement as the students when their entries morphed into articles worthy of GA and FA standards. In using Wikipedia as a platform for teaching the anatomy of a research paper, I have applied the theme "Do No Harm". Although not every student nor the articles they adopted showed substantial improvement; I feel comfortable that none were worse for the wear and tear.
I celebrate the successes, however, there is a trail of destroyed GPA's from those students who were unwilling to invest the time. This is a project that places considerable demands on that commodity. It is the reason that we bring to a close this grand adventure. There is a possibility some in this class will pursue FA (on their own time and with limited teacher supervision). I have little doubt that there are articles and authors that could meet these standards in this class.
I plan to encourage my colleagues to take up the cause - although time constraints seems to be the primary barrier. I hold little hope that they will follow. At some point, I would like to summarize this experience so that others may build on this model - I personally hope, during my retirement, to dabble in Wikipedia, at least until dementia shuts that option down.
I would especially like to thank the AP Class of 2011 for ending this journey with a series of amazingly well written and well researched articles. We can leave with our dignity intact! Cheers --JimmyButler (talk) 19:54, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a loss, but the end of a great gift to Wikipedia and the readers. I had great hopes that many would learn and work with you as a role model. I am sad that this did not happen. But it shows what a special person you are. --Ettrig (talk) 20:46, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, looks like I'm a bit too late on me joining you. But hey, better late than never I suppose. Please know that your work has inspired me and my AP Biology students are as we speak working on image contributions to Biology article. Find our work here- WP:APBAPST You are an inspiration. Enjoy your retirement! Earthdirt (talk) 14:12, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live![edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.
