Missing??[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:South_Korea_rail_transport_stubs This comes up on Google, but is not listed below? Any reason? Also, I am an English teacher in Korea and planning on having my students write articles to fill in stubs on the wiki. Is there any list of stubs by nation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.144.15.80 (talk) 03:40, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For a list of stub categories for South Korea (for example), look at the subcategories listing at Category:South Korea stubs and expand out the tree. All countries should have a single parent stub category, but some dependant islands do not yet. In theory, all of those categories should be listed here, but they will mostly be listed under the topic rather than the country. And since this list is kept up to date manually, there are a lot of cats missing. --Qetuth (talk) 09:27, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ship Builder Stub[edit]

I don't know if this the correct place to ask this, but is there a stub for a person who designed ships? (The article in question is Ole Aanderud Larsen.) The Bone III 02:51, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mmmm. Not shipbuilders per se. I'd give him a norway-bio-stub and an engineer-stub. Grutness...wha? 03:35, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Stubbed. Thanks. The Bone III 03:22, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There should be separate shipwright & naval architect stubs. Trekphiler (talk) 19:57, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not really much point, given the very tiny number of stubs on the subject, but feel free to propose one at WP:WSS/P if you think there are a reasonable number. Grutness...wha? 09:46, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some more proposals to cut the page size[edit]

1. Remove the comment about *D as obsolete as no one bothers to mark on the stub types page anymore which stubs have been proposed for deletion. Saves a few bytes.

2. Establish three templates {{WPSS*B}}, {{WPSS*R}}, and {{WPSS*W}} to handle placing the *B, *R, and *W markers. Won't do anything to change load times for people looking at the stub list, but it will shave a little off the size of the edit text and at the same time it'll regularize the appearance and code of those markers.

3. Drop the stub type size counts. We have a bot that regularly patrols the stub types looking for overlarge stub types for To Do so I fail to see the utility of keeping the counts on the main stub list anymore. Presumably the bot could also bring to attention undersized stub types as well.

Obviously #3 will reduce the size the most, but it will require a major change in the way we do things. on this page. The first two are only incremental improvements. Caerwine Caer’s whines 05:20, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've been wondering for a while about dropping the size tallies - they don't do anything that the bot doesn't other than clutter up an already overfull page. The other moves are probably good ones, too.
Another possible move that would take more implementing but might be worthwhile at some future point is to combine the national Foo-stub and Foo-geo-stub sections, though this may take quite a bit of thinking out to make it work well. Most countries now have their own X-stub and X-geo-stub types, so instead of having
we could have something like
As I said, it still needs some working out, but it would at least make the page's length shorter, even if it dodn't shorten the coding much. For now, though., I'd definitely support the three moves you've suggested. Grutness...wha? 07:57, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This seems to me a go0d idea. The length of the page is a definite drawback. semper fictilis 20:47, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I read an argument near the top of this page to the effect that this page's incredible size is acceptable because it's a maintenance page and isn't meant to be read. Bear in mind that's not a quote, and it's probably a slight distortion of what was actually said, but it's a good straw man for my point here. Let the maintenance page be huge, nobody seems to want to read it (unless you're a hardcore dab fixer, I guess), or maybe it's just the intermittent dab fixers like me. What would it take to make a seperate page that's much easier on the loading facilities? From what I've read, such pages have already been made; why are they not being advertised, are they buggy, or substandard in some way? Xaxafrad 20:32, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is to some extent a maintence page, but to the extent that the page size and load can be reduced without affecting the maintenence uses it's still a good idea. Caerwine Caer’s whines 22:58, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(after edit conflict)Separate pages were made, and they were deleted, for maintenance reasons. This list is updated and maintained by hand, and is often the only way that stub-sorters get to know that someone has made a new stub type without proposal. If Separate smaller lists were spoplit off for general use, it would be absolutely impossible top maintain them so that they remained identical to the main list without using transclusion of the smaller lists into the larger list, which defeats the original purpose. it's hard enough to maintain one list - to maintain a bunch of them and make sure they continue to tally would be such a full-time job that there would be no time to actually sort any stubs. Note that partial lists exist at the top of some "base-level" stub categories, such as Category:Geography stubs. They may be of some help, but the best solution is still to find some way to reduce the size of this page. Grutness...wha? 23:02, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've started to implement the WPSS*B template. Unfortunately, so far adding missing *B links is doing more to lengthen the list than using the template is doing to shorten it. Caerwine Caer’s whines 23:43, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I note that if we drop the counts, then it removes the requirement (in any case a somewhat soft one, "only" relating to the amount of work involved -- there's no actual 'bot involved, btw) to keep the page in one piece to facilitate updating those. So we could then have a 17 (say) sub-pages, which one could then transclude on one version of /ST, and link to from another, which would further facilitate those that find the size of the whole page at-a-gulp unreasonable, even for just loading it. Alai 04:10, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW, I never realised that was the reason for keeping things on one page! The main concerns I've always had with it were trying to keep track of people adding things to the different pages - it means 17 times as many things on a watchlist (not that that's probably too much of a concern). The main reason I made the page in the first place was to get everything onto one page rather than having lots of transcluded bits everywhere. Grutness...wha? 04:42, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's a reason I mentioned previously; I wouldn't claim it was the killer reason unto itself. (And even if the counts are/were kept, a work-around would be/have been possible... just no-one actually has, and doing it as-is would have meant significant extra work by hand. Come to that, the list didn't seem to get updated after the latest db dump, anyway.) I don't think 16 additional pages to watch are any great issue (to put it in less melodramatic terms than "17 times as many"), but perhaps I'm biased due to my watchlist having jumped the shark a long time ago. If anything, I think there'd be a case for splitting it up more than that; anyone who's deleted or renamed a stub type lately can't help but have noted the number of "local" links to various stub types -- sometimes literally just cut'n'pasted chunks from /ST. If those could be turned into transclusions, too, we'd cut down on the number of such duplicate links to maintain. But perhaps we'd better walk before we try to run... Alai 07:15, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Any complaints with {{WPSS*B}}? Any objections to continuing with {{WPSS*R}} and {{WPSS*W}} as originally planned? Caerwine Caer’s whines 21:56, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Nationality-sport-stub" listings[edit]

There are eight "Sport stubs by nationality" subcategories of Category:Sports stubs (Australia, Belgium, India, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, South Africa), none of which are listed here. Would it be a good idea to list them here in the "Sports" section under a "By country" header? Or not at all? (Currently there is no Category:Sport stubs by nationality – cf. Category:Sportspeople stubs by nationality.) Thoughts welcomed. Cheers. – Liveste (talk) 10:01, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sounds like a good idea on both counts. Grutness...wha? 23:44, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please suggest a stub type for a Blu-Ray/HD DVD technology.[edit]

I was going to add a stub template to the In-Movie Experience article but I'm not sure which category it should come under. 'Technology' seemed a bit vague. Could a more experienced Wikipedian please suggest one (or feel free to add it to the article yourself). ;) ChimpanzeeUK (talk) 08:43, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Placement[edit]

Not sure quite where "United Nations biography stubs - {{UN-bio-stub}}" belongs; multiple places seem applicable. Picaroon (t) 01:38, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Probably somewhere on the "Government, law, and politics" subpage - either under politicians (though it's not quite a fit) or under Int-org-stub. Grutness...wha? 04:19, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Time measurement[edit]

There seems to be no stub category for time, calendars, dates, etc. I was trying to stubsort Shrove Monday, and eventually opted for {{Christianity-stub}} but wanted to find something about dates, or even something about traditions/folklore. Any thoughts? PamD (talk) 17:59, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, but things like Shrove Monday would normally get {{festival-stub}}, which is for "high days, holy days and bonfire nights", as my mum puts it. Grutness...wha? 23:58, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I missed that one while browsing up and down the enormous file of stub types (I think I was misled by the child category for Film Festivals, and didn't think of the other meanings of "festival"! Now added, thanks. PamD (talk) 00:16, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just so you know, if you want to search for a specific term on a webpage, you can usually press ⌘-F on a Mac or Control-F on a Windows computer to bring up a window where you can type in what you want to find and it will look for instances of the text on the page.--98.114.243.75 (talk) 18:06, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dynamic list[edit]

What is meant by the following:

This is a dynamic list of stub messages/templates that are applied to stubs.

The list appears to be static and manually updated. Dbiel (Talk) —Preceding comment was added at 03:51, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone replace the following:

This is a dynamic list of stub messages/templates that are applied to stubs.

With:

This is a manually maintained list of stub messages/templates that are applied to stubs.

When I try to edit it, all I get is a blank window. Thank you Dbiel (Talk) 06:36, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hm - not sure why you got a blank page. I agree that the point about it being a dynamic list is misleading, due to two different meanings of the term. It is dynamic in that it is frequently changed, but not dynamic in that it is not automated. I'll amend it to a less ambiguous wording. Grutness...wha? 07:58, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for making the edit. I believe that the blank page issue relates to the size of the page no being able to load on my computer. Dbiel (Talk) 01:33, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uneasy rider[edit]

I came across a defunct Japanese moto mfr, Rikuo, & wanted a moto stub. I can't find one, let alone Japanese, let alone defunct Japanese. Let me suggest, at least, {{motorcycle-company-stub}}. Trekphiler (talk) 01:40, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • The place to propose new stub types is WP:WSS/P, not here. Might be useful, at that. Grutness...wha? 11:21, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"art"[edit]

The "art" section should probably be renamed "visual arts" since it does not include music, for one.
--Jerome Potts (talk) 04:48, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're probably right, though it does include multimedia art. I've changed it, but wouldn't be too surprised if that change were reverted. Grutness...wha? 09:46, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whole sections are missing![edit]

What happened to Government, and other technologies? I'm not sure I'm gonna go looking thru the history, but these seem to have gone missing.
~ender 2008-02-29 20:04:PM MST

They're still there - sections 2.5 and 2.13. Grutness...wha? 09:46, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, no they're not, at least when you come in from this link:
Wikipedia:WikiProject_Stub_sorting/Stub_types/People#People_by_occupation
There are no sections other than:
1 People
1.1 People by occupation
1.2 People by nation or region
1.2.1 African people
1.2.2 Asian people
1.2.3 European people
1.2.4 North and Central American people
1.2.5 Oceanian people
1.2.6 South American people
1.3 Royalty and nobility
So the cross-wikilinks under occupation are broken. Ie: this link doesn't work:
Wikipedia:WikiProject_Stub_sorting/Stub_types/People#Government.2C_law_and_politics
~ender 2008-03-07 01:47:AM MST
Mmmm. Looks like some redirects got missed out when the page was split into sections. Hopefully I've fixed them all. Grutness...wha? 23:38, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Military stubs[edit]

How about a military technology stub for defense contractors? Some don't build an entire weapons platform but are engage in a certain technology such as avionics, structure, crew systems, weapons, etc. --THE FOUNDERS INTENT TALK 16:05, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have you considered proposing one at WP:WSS/P, which is where new stub types are proposed (as it says at the top of Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types?) Grutness...wha? 21:58, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Motorcycle racing[edit]

There's a rather large category of Motorcycle racing stubs that isn't represented in the Sports section, I'm going to add it. Any objections? Black-Velvet 07:48, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks fine to me - it was proposed last year. Quite often new stub types that were proposed and created somehow slip through the net and don't make it to this page - this must've been one of them. Grutness...wha? 08:56, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Attempt to "fix" page[edit]

Hi all - looks like one user has unilaterally decided to "fix" this page by turning into a duplicate of Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/List of stubs. The list as it was may have been problematic to use when the servers are running slow, but it was still useful for all that, and I for one strongly oppose the change that has been made to it - a change made without any discussion with WP:WSS, I hasten to add. I've tried to revert it, but for some reason can't do so - can anyone else with a more crunchy computer have a go? Grutness...wha? 03:47, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This problem page was converted to Links by Gimmetrow at 00:37, 21 April 2008 (UTC). Kathleen.wright5 08:44, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes - (s)he did so without discussion on whether it was a good idea to do so or whether there was a purpose in keeping the page in the format it was in, and apparently without realising that there was already a page made of links for people who preferred to use that at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/List of stubs. Grutness...wha? 23:18, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was able to get about half of it back, by gradually moving down a temporary heading and editing the page in sections; but, even that has reached a tipping point it seems.... It might be possible to 1) blank all of the transcluded pages for a couple of minutes, 2) finish reverting this page, 3) restoring the original pages; but, I'm out of time this morning. Neier (talk) 00:36, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. In case it happens again, what I ultimately did was restore everything except the Geography section (because it was the longest). Then, blanked the geography page for a minute while this page was updated to transclude it. After this page finished updating, the geography page was restored. Now, the page is restored in all its un-loadable glory. :-) Neier (talk) 13:48, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks :) Grutness...wha? 23:44, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unloadable glory indeed - the page was coming up blank this afternoon; see Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Page_can't_be_displayed. — Carl (CBM · talk) 17:02, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That happens sometimes - which is why there ais the alternative Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/List of stubs. The main thing though is that this shouldn't be edited unless there is discussion about it first, because it's the devil's own job to try to get it back in the full list form (which is still used, though unpredictable in its loading). It's probably worth protecting the page to make sure that no-one else tries to blank sections or turn it into a duplicate of the "List of stubs" page - to save the hassle of trying to get everything back again. It's worth noting that WP's servers in general have been struggling in the last few days (categories sometimes take hours to update, for instance. Grutness...wha? 01:32, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Small mistake on this page.[edit]

There's a small mistake on this page just before the Science section - see WikiPedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types#Science. I tried to correct it but I got a blank page as before. The Compact List is fine. Can it be fixed by an Admin? Kathleen.wright5 07:40, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Social work stub[edit]

I've found {{socialwork-stub}} by digging around in categories, but can't see it in the list of stubtypes. Is it there? Could it be added - not sure where, as there's nothing much on "Society" except for "Sociology" under "Science - other", which is a bit of a struggle to find! Or am I missing something? PamD (talk) 11:10, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have added under "Miscellaneous" for want of anywhere better. (Was stubsorting a residential home for abused children - any suggestions of a better stubtype? Can't find anything on Child Welfare, for example) PamD (talk) 11:24, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation Stub[edit]

Is there a stub for disambiguation pages. I need one for Berlioz. I just put {{stub}} there for now. Asmeurer (talkcontribs) 22:46, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Surely that's not appropriate - tag it as a {{dab}}. In fact I couldn't resist tidying it up - found a 3rd Berlioz on a quick search, formatted it, just a couple of minutes. PamD (talk) 23:01, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, didn't know about {{dab}}. I figured that at least by asking here, someone who knows a little more than I do about disambiguation pages would fix it up. Asmeurer (talkcontribs) 23:04, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On 2nd thoughts I think it's a {{surname}}, though I also wondered about {{hndis}} (that one's Human Name Disambiguation)! PamD (talk) 23:08, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And on 3rd thoughts... the malformed dab page over-wrote a long-established and much-linked redirect, so I moved the improved dab page to Berlioz (disambiguation), reinstated the original redirect from Berlioz, and added a hatnote to Hector Berlioz. And that's enough for tonight! PamD (talk) 23:24, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Disambiguation pages should never get the {{stub}} tag - {{disambig}} is the main one, though, as pointed out, there are others, and {{hndis}} or {{surname}} would be the one to use in this case. If you think a disambiguation page could be expanded, I think you could probably get away with adding {{listdev}} to it. As for moving the dab page to make way for a former redirect, it's fairly standard practice to overwrite redirects with dabs when it's clear they're being used as redirects for more than one article - which is presumably why this dab page was put there in the first place (though a quick glance at Special:WhatLinksHere/Berlioz suggests that most links currently are aiming at the composer). Grutness...wha? 01:30, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's it - I looked at "what links here", decided there were so many, all apparently aimed at Hector, that it was best left as is, so backtracked and added the hatnote to his page instead! PamD (talk) 08:32, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Argentinean University stubs[edit]

I reverted the two Argentinean University stubs entries for several reasons

  1. They were inserted into the wrong location following Africa. This is a contenent based list.
  2. They are poorly built templates adding articles to incorrect and non-existant categories
  3. There are currently only 140 articles in the South America University stub category

I see some value in keepting {{Argentina-university-stub}} but {{Arg-National University-stub}} should be deleted as not needed.

I will fix {{Argentina-university-stub}} and have it feed into Category:South America university stubs Dbiel (Talk) 20:45, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, this makes me VERY angry. I created Argentina-university-stub yesterday, as an outcome of an SFD debate,. It fed into Category:South America university stubs, as per the outcome of that debate. {{Arg-National University-stub}} was turned into a temporary redirect to it until it could be orphaned and deleted. Seems like someone is deliberately perverting the outcome of that debate. i shall give them an official warning on their talk page. Grutness...wha? 01:05, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Television Character Stub[edit]

I created a new category for fictional (or I guess they could also be non-fictional, but by fictional I mean that it isn't speaking of an actor, but the actual character) characters on television shows. It is located here, but I don't know where to put it in the list. If there is another one that I missed that is the same thing (I couldn't find one; all I found were television actors) could someone please delete it? Otherwise, could someone put it in the list. Thanks G man yo (talk) 14:05, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted it is. You didn't create a category, BTW, you created a template - a duplicate of {{tv-char-stub}}, which has been around for quite a long time. In future, it would probably be as well if you follow the instructions at WP:STUB and propose new stub types before making them - that way you'd have been told that one already existed before you started on this. As to where on the list it is, not surprisingly, it's under Culture#Television. Grutness...wha? 22:55, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, sorry. Couldn't find it on the list. I'm a bit new to this, not exactly an expert. Next time I'll do that :P G- man yo (talk) 05:25, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Arts[edit]

Unless I've missed something really obvious, and I've been looking for an hour, all the arts are missing and many of the artistic professions.

People by occupation: Musician, [inc any subcategories eg classical musician], poet [ditto], author [ditto], Performance Artist, etc

Music, Literature, Poetry, Sculpture, Fine Arts, etc

There are one or two inclusions in ogranizations that imply they all shoulbd be there though: Music organization stubs, Art organization stubs, etc

Have I missed something? How do I tag "This music-related article is needing expansion"?

Jubilee♫clipman 10:03, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would you credit it: I found it at the top just after I wrote this... Why, oh, why are they hidden away on a separate page? Science isn't and it is just as big, if not bigger. Also, I assumed the top few sections were just a generic explanation of this page, not a portal to other pages containing yet more stubs. The Culture subpage needs much great highlighting... Jubilee♫clipman 10:11, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're prettyy much describing how the page used to be a couple of years ago before some of the sections started ballooning in size and editors from across Wikipedia started complaining about the page being too big. That's the reason it's now in separate sections. Mind you, some of those sections are now getting big enough that they probably need splitting, too. Grutness...wha? 22:05, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Change to Culture portal[edit]

Have hopefully made it more obvious to anyone expecting everything to be listed here that it is not. Jubilee♫clipman 10:42, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have done the same for Geography, as that was almost impossible to spot. I have also added the list of subcategories below the category title as some of these are surprising, eg Buildings and structures being under Geography. I thought geography was The study of the physical structure and inhabitants of the Earth. Don't see how this includes buildings and structures which are really forms of architecture. Jubilee♫clipman 18:18, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have changed them back. Please - this list is used by thousands of people regularly. Discussion, not bold action, is what's needed on changes likke this. Oh, and they're not portals, they're subpages. Grutness...wha? 22:08, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sex cat[edit]

On a diiferent matter: why the separate stubs for those two sexual items particularly? There seems no real need to split the category up. I can understand the porn one actually, as it is huge, but the BDSM one only contains 113 items which could be sent back to sex quite comfortably, given that sex contains many items that are probably BDSM anyway, eg Autosadism, Emasculation, Breast binding, and Anal jewelry. Also Erotic furniture is not necessarily BDSM. Just my 2c... Jubilee♫clipman 18:18, 23 December 2008---- (UTC)

113 is nontrivial, actually... --Alynna (talk) 20:27, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds to me more like it needs sorting to see which stub goes where, rather than a merging of the two. Grutness...wha? 21:56, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Native American drumming group[edit]

Regarding Veterans_Songs, I had to hunt around in the stubs until I finally decided on {{US-band-stub}}. I then added an explanation after the name of the stub that it "Includes drumming groups." Whereupon another editor reverted my addition with the comment that "Believe it or not, drummers are musicians." (Rather a snarky remark, I thought.) If anybody wants to add a stub for North American drumming groups of all kinds, whether Native American or Japanese-American or Cuban-American or whatnot, I would be glad to use it. Or maybe there is already a better stub: Somehow I can't see that a drumming group is a "band." But what do I know? Yours in friendship, GeorgeLouis (talk) 00:08, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

classical music stubs[edit]

Should these be on this page? Asmeurer (talkcontribs) 16:13, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I should think so. I don't know why it says "Please do not add any other material here, as it will be removed." This list would be more useful if it was updated more frequently and had ALL the stub types. Can someone tell me why so many are missing? -- OlEnglish (Talk) 21:31, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OlEnglish - only stubs that have been vetted and approved by WP:WSS, through either the proposal or discovery process, go onto this list. There are so many official stub types that adding unapproved ones can go unnoticed for some time. These unofficial types oftenhave major problems with them can be very disruptive to the stub-sorting process (and thus to WP editing overall). As far as I can tell, though, all of the types listed by Asmeurer seem to be approved types (easiest way to check is to check each template's "Whatlinkshere" list, filtering for Wikispace pages - approved types should have a link to a WP:WSS subpage - if it does it's easy to check by clicking that link whether it is official or not. Grutness...wha? 22:06, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Thank you. Still, the stub type list does need a major update/expansion. And why aren't the all the new stub types from Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries being added to the list? Seems no one is maintaining this list. -- OlEnglish (Talk) 19:01, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"Discoveries" are just that - they aren't added to the list until a decission's been made about whether they can be kept as is, need to be amended, or need to be sent to WP:SFD. But you're right about maintenance - WP:WSS's had a handful of defections from long-standing vocal members of the project lately (Alai no longer sorts stubs, Pegship's been notably silent there lately, and I've had health problems that have kept me away as well), so there may be a bit of a lag. Grutness...wha? 21:49, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Out of date?[edit]

Is this page out of date or something? There are 5569 links to templates from WP:SST + Culture + Geography, however, there are just under 13,000 pages in template namespace that end in -stub [1]. That seems like an awful lot of rogue stubs. –xenotalk 16:17, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Several things make that second total much higher - (a) there are a lot of redirects to stub templates - probably a couple of thousand at least; (b) it's a difficult, full-time task to ensure that all templates get onto this page, so there are likely to be a fair few which either never have or are still to go onto it - probably a four-figure number; (c) there are a lot of rogue stubs - at a guess probably in the thousands. At one time I was checking Wikipedia:New pages daily and pulling out five to ten new rogue stub templates per week. I did that for about six months until health problems meant I had to cut back on my wiki work, but if the same has been true every week since then, that would account for about 100-200 unapproved stub templates alone (of which about 10 have appeared in either the discoveries page of WP:WSS or WP:SFD). And there are no doubt huge numbers as yet undiscovered from before I did that task. Unfortunately I can't get the linked tool to run for me, so I can't see what sort of proportion of those listed are rogue, but my guess is that it's pretty high. Grutness...wha? 00:56, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes the tool seems not to be working today. Here's about 10000 of them so you can get a rough picture. I also have a list of probably unvetted stubs that were using asbox prior to me starting the conversion that didn't match up with the stub list. See: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries#Potentially unapproved stub types using asboxxenotalk 02:40, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Along the lines of Category:Mathematics stub templates. Pcap ping 11:15, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Organization of this page[edit]

I suggest moving the ethnicity stubs templates out of "Miscellaneous" into the "People" section, and the materials stubs templates out of "Miscellaneous" into the science and technology sections. It seems to me that we should try to keep things out of the misc. section as much as possible. » Swpbτ ¢ 14:54, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The whole list probably needs a complete overhaul. It was made when there were about 800 stub types - there are now several thousand and it struggles to keep up with the task. It's probably as well to leave too many major changes for a while, though - WP:WSS is busy trying to work through a huge list olf unproposed stubs and stubs which were proposed but not added to this list. Once that's done we'll be in a better position to see what goes where. Grutness...wha? 22:55, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This page is enormous and my browser is struggling to load and render it. This is probably a deterrent to editors from bothering to use the correct one. I suggest it needs to be broken into multiple pages. David Hollman (Talk) 23:07, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed this page: Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/List of stubs which seems to be much more effective. Why does this current page even have a comprehensive list? Isn't it duplicative as well as poorly-performing? David Hollman (Talk) 23:12, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

stub type for Scam Baiting[edit]

The article for Scam baiting really needs a stub template but I'm at a loss as to which type to choose. I don't want to use a generic {{internet-stub}} tag and the article is categorized under Social engineering (computer security) but I'm not finding an existing stub type for that category. I almost gave it a {{security-software-stub}}, but that's not really what the article is about. Can anyone suggest a stub(or add a stub to the page)? At this point, I just want to know the answer... ocrasaroon (talk) 20:40, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Normally in this sort oif circumstance you'd add two stub templates rather than just one. One would be the internet one, but I'm not sure what the other would be... anyone? Grutness...wha? 22:56, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Shrew stubs[edit]

The white-toothed shrew stub template needs a picture. Of course, I also feel that having a different stub for white toothed and red toothed shrews is a little too specific. I feel that a simple "this article about shrews (Soricidae)..." label would be adequate. ForestAngel (talk) 16:44, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Literacy stubs[edit]

I noticed that there is a suprising lack of stub templates for literature (book articles, genres etc). Even though there aren't many literature-related stubs, does anyone think it would be a good idea to create a book stub? Tonyxc600 (talk) 10:04, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Check the culture subpage. Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types/Culture#Literature has quite a few. --Qetuth (talk) 19:11, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How many stub-modules in one article?[edit]

I am not familiar with all regulations in en-wikipedia. I noticed, that a user recently created a new stub-template and spread it over dozens of articles (e.g. here) although there is already another stub-template. Is this suitable? In my opinion there should be only one stub-sign per article. --cefalon 22:39, 14 July 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cccefalon (talkcontribs)

Much like regular categories, there are situations where more than one stub tag is called for, perhaps because none which covers the intersection exists. For example, you might put tags for both Australian scientist and Biologist because no tag exists for Australian biologist. However, generally a more specific stub is assumed to negate the need for a less specific one - you would not put Scientist or Australian person on the same article as they are already covered. In this case, however, 'Sabah and Sabah geography clearly shouldn't be on the same articles (as logically the latter should be a subcategory of the former), and it does not look to me like the Sabah template was ever proposed or discussed, despite its author adding the notice about where to propose to the category. I will bring it up at wherever stubs are being discussed for deletion now. --Qetuth (talk) 15:10, 20 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Opinions - When is a stub no longer a stub?[edit]

When is a stub no longer a stub? I know in AWB's tagging fixes, if it sees a page with 500 words or more with a stub tag it removes it. Is this a general guideline? An upper limit? ·Add§hore· Talk To Me! 22:32, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The official description is 'a few sentences'. I usually remove something that has say 4 paragraphs or 12 lines, and add a tag if it has only 2 paragraphs/6 lines. And, only counting prose paragraph text. --Qetuth (talk) 05:10, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

India rail station[edit]

Hi, the stub on Railway stations in India currently reads This article about a railroad station in India is a stub.. I'm not very well versed with stubtypes and all, so I have a question. Can the body of the stub be changed to read railway station instead of railroad station? Nobody in India uses the word 'railroad', it's always 'railway'. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:39, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate radio comms listing[edit]

This appears twice:

I thought you'd want to know. ~ MD Otley (talk) 06:30, 19 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Mdotley: Yes, once at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types/Technology#Computing and telecommunications the other at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types/Miscellaneous#Miscellaneous. That's OK, since the structure is not a true tree: some leaves can be joined to more than one branch. In this case, the one under Miscellaneous can be thought of as a subdivision of Communication stubs, which does not fit under Computing and telecommunications. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:54, 19 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Redrose64: Right, but according to the page itself, one occurrence should be deemed the main one, and the other designated otherwise by being listed in small text.
The parent-child relationships shown in the listing below reflect the relationship between categories into which each template places the article to which it is affixed. Multiple parentage is indicated by the presence of small text describing child stub types that appear elsewhere in the listing. This is done to eliminate duplication of stub counts, which inevitably leads to different values for the multiple listings of the same stub type as a result of human error.
I am not yet sufficiently familiar with the arrangement and processes to fix this, so I'm just raising it for your awareness and possible action. ~ MD Otley (talk) 15:52, 19 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alternatively, you could have used Template:Greenland-stub. That might actually be better. As there are only 16 articles in Category:Airports in Greenland, even if every one of them were stubs, they have insufficient numbers to qualify for a category. {{airport-stub}}, {{Greenland-stub}}, or as mentioned, {{Denmark-airport-stub}}, would be the existing alternatives.
