Astro Bot (アストロボット, Asutorobotto) is an upcoming platform game developed by Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is a sequel to the 2020 game Astro's Playroom. The game is scheduled to be released on September 6, 2024, exclusively for the PlayStation 5.[1][2]

Gameplay[edit]

Astro Bot is a 3D platformer where the player controls a robot named Astro. There are over 80 levels, split across six galaxies and 50 planets.[3] Traversal between these galaxies is achieved through traveling on the "Dual Speeder", a spaceship shaped like a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. Astro also has access to new abilities which can diversify the gameplay. These include a bulldog named Barkster which gives Astro the ability to air-dash through enemies and terrain, and a pair of frog gloves which allow Astro the punch from a distance and swing off of certain surfaces. Additionally, boss battles are present at the end of each galaxy.[4]

Having first appeared in Astro's Playroom, robots referencing various characters from prominent PlayStation games and franchises (such as God of War and Uncharted) make a return in Astro Bot. There are over 150 "VIP Bots" which can be recruited.[5]

Astro Bot will reportedly not support PlayStation VR2. This is despite the fact that previous Astro games (such as Astro Bot Rescue Mission and The Playroom VR) required the use of PlayStation VR.[6]

Marketing and release[edit]

Astro Bot was announced on May 30, 2024, during Sony's State of Play presentation.[7]

To help further market the game, Astro's Playroom received a free content update. These new additions included extra artifacts in the gatcha machine (such as the PlayStation VR 2 headset and the PlayStation Portal), and new bots (one of whom references Lady Maria from Bloodborne).[8]
