"How Sweet" is a song by South Korean girl group NewJeans. It was released by ADOR as a CD single on May 24, 2024, along with the B-side track "Bubble Gum". NewJeans began promoting the single in April 2024, by releasing the music video for "Bubble Gum" on YouTube, having the song's Japanese version be featured in advertisements and television programs in Japan, and appearing on music shows and variety shows in South Korea.

Background[edit]

After debuting in 2022, South Korean girl group NewJeans had their international breakthrough in 2023 with the release of the single album OMG and their second extended play (EP), Get Up.[1] In January 2023, NewJeans entered the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with the singles "Ditto" and "OMG".[1] In South Korea, "Ditto" became the most successful song of the year, topping the Circle Digital Chart for a record-breaking thirteen weeks,[2][3] receiving numerous accolades,[4] and introducing the breakbeat trend in the K-pop music industry.[5] Released in July 2023, Get Up internationally established NewJeans as one of the most prominent music acts of the year,[6] becoming the group's first entry and number-one on the Billboard 200,[1] selling over two million copies,[4] and being named among the best albums of 2023 by several publications.[6]

Music and lyrics[edit]

"Bubble Gum" is a pop track containing lyrics in both English and Korean.[7] Ahead of its release, NewJeans described "How Sweet" as a Miami bass song.[8]

Release and promotion[edit]

On March 27, 2024, ADOR announced that NewJeans would host a fan meeting in Japan and release two double singles in 2024: "How Sweet" and "Bubble Gum" on May 24 and "Supernatural" and "Right Now" on June 21.[9] ADOR stated that NewJeans would be making their debut in the Japanese music market with the release of "Supernatural", their first song in Japanese, while they would focus on promoting "How Sweet" and "Bubble Gum" in South Korea.[9] In conjuction with the singles' announcement, ADOR stated that NewJeans would release an album in the second half of 2024 and embark on a worldwide tour in 2025.[9] The press release caused Hybe Corporation's daily market capitalization to increase by nearly 1 trillion.[10] In April 2024, ADOR announced that member Hyein would not participate in promotional activities to recover from an injury.[11]

A snippet of "Bubble Gum"'s Japanese version became available on April 8, 2024, after first being featured on Japanese television in Kao's advertisement for their hair care brand Essential and in the morning show Mezamashi 8 [ja] as its new theme song.[12][13] The CD single became available for pre-order on April 26, 2024. It will be released in two physical formats: a vinyl LP-sized version and a Weverse-exclusive version. Additional items available with the CD include a book containing interviews with the members, a photo book, stickers, posters, photo cards, and post cards.[14] The following day, a music video for "Bubble Gum" directed by Youngeum Lee was released on YouTube and subsequently gained over six million views in 15 hours.[15][16] In the video, the members are seen enjoying a summer day, blowing bubbles, weaving friendship bracelets, making ballon animals, and playing with soap bubbles and marbles in a variety of settings.[17] "Bubble Gum" debuted at number 15 on Billboard's Hits of the World chart for South Korea and number 166 on the Billboard Global Excl. US in the chart issue dated May 11, 2024.[18][19] The track also topped the popular music video and popular song categories on YouTube Korea.[20]

In May 2024, NewJeans began making appearances on South Korean music shows, including Music Bank, and variety shows, including 2 Days & 1 Night and Park Myung-soo's web show on YouTube.[21][22] NewJeans will perform at the K-Wave Concert Inkigayo on June 2, 2024.[23]
