Adam Johnson (Canadian conductor)

Adam Johnson is a Canadian classical conductor. He is currently music director and principal conductor of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, which is based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Education

Johnson obtained a Bachelor of Music in piano performance at the University of Alberta in Edmonton,[1] under the tutorage of Stéphane Lemelin [fr] and Jacques Dépres. He obtained a master's degree, an artist diploma under Jean Saulnier and later obtained a doctoral degree under the direction of Jean Saulnier and Marc Durand [fr] at the Université de Montréal in Montreal.[2] He concurrently obtained a Prize in orchestral conducting from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal under Raffi Armenian.[citation needed]

Career

Johnson's professional conducting debut was as Resident Conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in Calgary, Alberta.[3] He later became Assistant then Resident conductor of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in Montreal, Quebec assisting Kent Nagano for three seasons.[4] He was appointed Music Director of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra in 2023.[5]

Honours

Johnson was awarded the Jean-Marie Beaudet Award for orchestra conducting in 2015[6] and an OPUS award with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 2018.[7]
