The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are upcoming smartphones that will be designed and marketed by Apple. Apple will hold their special event on September 10, 2024, with pre-orders occurring on September 13, and will be released on September 20, 2024 with iOS 18.[1]

History[edit]

The Radio Equipment Directive, which requires that all electronic devices in the European Union use USB-C charging was passed into law in 2023. Apple confirmed it would comply with the regulations, and in September of that year revealed that the iPhone 15 would have a USB-C port instead of a lightning port.[2] The iPhone 16 will also be required to use USB-C under EU law. Additionally, India passed a similar USB-C mandate which will go into effect in March 2025, also affecting the type of charging used for the iPhone 16.[3]

Design[edit]

Display[edit]

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will come with larger screen sizes, 6.27" (15.9 cm) and 6.86" (17.4 cm), from 6.12" (15.5 cm) and 6.69" (17 cm), and they will also feature a slightly taller aspect ratio, from 16.5:9 (11:6) to 16.6:9 (83:45).

Colors[edit]

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will come in seven new different colors, including: Purple, Pink, Yellow, Black, Blue, Green and White.

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will have a vertical camera layout, similarly to the iPhone 12. Apple used a diagonal layout for iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 15, and Apple has not provided a reason as to why these models will switch back.
