Seol Hee is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Originally created by Danny Koo, Bill Rosemann, and Jeehyung Lee, and then adapted for comics by writer Greg Pak and artist Gang Hyuk Lim, the character first appeared in the video game Marvel Future Fight in 2018, and later made her comic book debut in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 (May 2019).[1]

Seol Hee is a South Korean superhero and K-pop idol.[2] She wields ice-based superpowers,[3] enabling her to manipulate and generate ice in various forms. Hee is known by her stage name Luna and the codename Luna Snow.[4] The character is also a member of the superhero team Agents of Atlas.[5]

Since her original introduction, the character has been featured in various Marvel-licensed products, including video games and music videos.

Development

Concept and creation

The name Seol Hee translates to "snow" and "hope" in Korean.[6] The character first appeared as an original character in the 2018 video game Marvel Future Fight.[7] The South Korean mobile game developer Netmarble requested a character described as an "ice magician who could both heal and deal damage" for the game.[8] Seol Hee was also developed in response to fan requests for more culturally diverse characters. Marvel Games Executive Creative Director Bill Rosemann remarked on her introduction, emphasizing that Marvel's global fanbase deserves heroes who not only inspire their support but also resonate with them on a personal level.[9] Following her debut, Marvel Entertainment released several promotional singles for Luna Snow.[10] Seol Hee was later integrated into the Marvel Universe in 2019.[11] The character was originally created by Danny Koo, Bill Rosemann, and Jeehyung Lee.

Seol Hee debuted in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 (May 2019), created by Greg Pak and Gang Hyuk Lim.[12] She later appeared in the 2019 Agents of Atlas series,[13] and the 2019 Future Fight Firsts: Luna Snow one-shot, her first solo comic book.[14] According to Diamond Comic Distributors, it was the 140th best selling comic book in October 2019.[15]

Hee appeared in the 2020 Atlantis Attacks series,[16] the 2022 Silk series.[17] the 2022 Marvel's Voices: Identity anthology series.[18] the 2022 Tiger Division series,[19] and the 2023 Spider-Gwen Annual one-shot.[20]

Fictional character biography

Seol Hee was raised by her grandmother following the deaths of her parents. As an aspiring singer, she aimed to support her family financially. She eventually pursued a career as an idol, performing under the stage name Luna.

During a live performance at Stark Arena, Hee was taken hostage by the supervillain organization Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.), after she tried to protect the attendees of the event.[21] She was trapped within a malfunctioning cold fusion reactor.[22] While attempting to escape, she acquired ice-based superpowers and subsequently defeated the A.I.M. forces, adopting the identity of Luna Snow.[23]

Hee fought with Crescent and White Fox against demons coming from Muspelheim.[24] She was initially captured by Sindr before Amadeus Cho rescued her.[25] She used her superpowers to prevent the North Pole's polar ice from melting with the help of Aero and Wave.[26] Hee and the other Agent of Atlas later defeated Sindr.[27]

While in Tokyo, Hee fought a group of wyverns after Mike Nguyen began merging various Asian cities within the city of Pan.[28]

Powers and abilities

Seol Hee possesses ice-based superpowers.[29] She can create ice structures of various forms, such as icicles and barriers, which she uses both to attack her enemies and to defend herself.[30] Her abilities notably allow her to generate dark ice with destructive effects and light ice with healing properties.[31] Furthermore, she is an accomplished singer and dancer.[23]

Ollie Bradley of Screen Rant observed that the trend of integrating pop stars into the MCU, exemplified by Taylor Swift's rumored involvement in Deadpool 3 and Harry Styles' surprise appearance as Starfox in Eternals, is promising. They highlighted that Seol Hee is a prime candidate for such casting. Bradley described her as a relatively new character who has quickly gained popularity, bolstered by her real-life K-pop singles, such as "Flow." They concluded that Luna Snow would be a fitting role for a real-life pop star, aligning with this trend of merging musical talent with superhero cinema.[32]

Impact

Seol Hee has been described as a fan-favorite character.[33] Her introduction as Luna Snow significantly enhanced the popularity of Marvel Future Fight in Asia. The game, already well-known in the region, notably saw an additional boost due to the inclusion of a K-pop idol character.[34] Jon Arvedon of Comic Book Resources referred to Luna Snow as a popular South Korean K-pop artist.[35] Zack Palm of Dot Esports noted that Seol Hee is a relatively new Marvel character who has emerged in recent years and has already made a significant impact.[36] In January 2023, her singles "Tonight" and "Flow feat. Luna Snow (Space Remix)" garnered over 86,000 and 41,000 views on YouTube, respectively.[37]
