Nick Lacey is an Irish and Australian filmmaker, director, producer and cinematographer.

Nick was born in Perth, and emigrated to Wexford, Ireland where he spent most of his childhood and teenage years. Nick finished his high schooling in Mandurah, Western Australia[1] before moving to Sydney, Australia where he currently lives.

Career[edit]

Television Career 2016-Present[edit]

In television, Nick has produced, directed and shot a number of observational documentary, factual television and reality television series for companies such as Endemol Shine Australia.[2], Blackfella Films[3], Paramount Australia[4] and the Seven Network.

Nick began his career working in the casting department of Endemol Shine Australia, working on major broadcast television series such as Australian Survivor[5], Married At First Sight[6] and Family Food Fight[7] before moving into production in 2018 on the first series of observational documentary Ambulance Australia[8], working as an associate producer, camera operator and post associate producer on the series.

Nick subsequently associate produced, shot and associate post-produced observational series One Born Every Minute[9] in 2019 for production company Endemol Shine Australia, associate story produced reality series First Dates season 04[10] for production company Warner Bros. Television Studios, and associate produced as well as shot House Rules Season 7[11] and House Rules Season 8[12] for the Seven Network.

In 2020-2021, Nick Lacey associate produced, shot and associate post-produced the widely acclaimed second series of the observational documentary Old People's Home for 4 Year Old's, broadcast on the ABC and ABC iview. The series won the 2021 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Award for Best Documentary or Factual Program[13][14] as well as the Australian Grand Award, Gold Award and Grand Award Winner in the New York Festivals TV and Film Awards Social Issues, Documentary Category.[15][16][17]

Nick returned to produce and shoot the follow up series to Old People's Home for 4 Year Old's in 2022, with the multiple award winning series Old People's Home for Teenagers.[18] The series won the 2022 AACTA Award for Best Factual Entertainment Program,[19][20] the Gold award in the New York Festivals TV and Film Awards, Social Issues Category[21][22] and was nominated for a Rose d'Or in 2022 within the Reality and Factual Entertainment category.[23]

In 2022 Nick directed and produced the acclaimed comedy factual television series Gogglebox Australia Series 16[24][25], which was nominated for an AACTA Award for Best Factual Entertainment Program.[26]

From 2022-2024 Nick has produced and shot the observational documentary series Lost For Words season 2[27] for broadcaster SBS, directed and shot observational documentary series Meet The Neighbours produced by Blackfella Films and broadcast on SBS, and directed, produced and shot the factual television series Dogs Behaving Very Badly Australia for Paramount Australia[28].

Film Career 2020-Present[edit]

Nick has directed, produced and shot four films to date alongside his sibling and co-directing and producing partner, Nathan Lacey. These films include Bareface (2020)[29] The Suspect (2021)[30] Ghosted (2022)[31] and Die Bully Die (2024)[32]

Bareface (2020)[edit]

In 2020, Nick directed and produced the short film Bareface[33], co-directed and produced with his sibling Nathan Lacey. It premiered in the Sydney Underground Film Festival in 2020.[34][35]

The Suspect (2021)[edit]

In 2021, Nick directed and produced the short film The Suspect[36], co-directed and produced with his sibling Nathan Lacey. It premiered in the inaugural Sony Catchlight Film Festival in 2021.[37]

Ghosted (2022)[edit]

In 2022, Nick directed and produced the short film Ghosted[38], co-directed and produced with his sibling Nathan Lacey. The film had its world premiere at the 69th Sydney Film Festival[39], running in competition in the Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films category[40] with the film receiving a special jury mention in judging[41]. Ghosted was also officially selected for the 2022 Cinéfest Oz Film Festival[42], 2022 Melbourne Queer Film Festival[43], and won the Best Screenwriting Award in the 2023 Mardi Gras Film Festival within the My Queer Career category[44].

Die Bully Die (2024)[edit]

In 2024, Nick directed and produced the short film Die Bully Die[45] co-directed and produced with his sibling Nathan Lacey. The film had its world premiere at the 71st Sydney Film Festival[46], running in competition in the Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films category[47]. The film won the Dendy Award for Best Live Action Short at the festival.[48][49]

Awards and Nominations[edit]

In 2024 at the 71st Sydney Film Festival, Nick won the Dendy Award for Best Live Action Short for his film Die Bully Die.[50][51]

Nick has been nominated for the Dendy Live Action Short Award and the Rouben Mamoulian Award for Best Director within the 69th edition of the Sydney Film Festival for his short film Ghosted[52][53].

In 2014 Nick Lacey won the Bond University Television and Film Award for Best Editing Award, as well as the Dean's Choice Award for his short documentary Pursuit of Light.[54][55]
