Varun Choudhary (born February 6, 1995, in Delhi, India) is an Indian politician and the current National President of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Indian National Congress.

Early Life and Background[edit]

Varun Choudhary was born on February 6, 1995, in Delhi, India. He faced adversity early in life with the passing of his father in 2001. Varun's political journey began with his election as Secretary in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) in 2012.

Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU)[edit]

In 2012, Choudhary was elected as Secretary in DUSU.[1]

National Students' Union of India (NSUI)[edit]

In 2013, he became the General Secretary of Delhi NSUI. By 2015, he was promoted to National Coordinator and then National Secretary of NSUI. In 2024, Varun was appointed as the National President of NSUI.[2]

Advocacy and Movements[edit]

Choudhary has been involved in several student movements across India:

In 2024, under his leadership, NSUI protested against the rigging of the NEET Exam.[3][4] He also led protests against BJP MP Anant Kumar Hegde’s call for changes to the Indian Constitution.[5]

Recent Controversies and Activities[edit]

In June 2024, Varun Choudhary demanded a CBI inquiry into the NEET scam and urged for a ban on the NTA.[6] NSUI members, including Varun Choudhary, were detained during a protest outside the Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's residence regarding the NEET and CUET paper leaks.[7] NSUI members, including Varun Choudhary, protested against the cancellation of UGC-NET 2024 and were detained outside Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's house.[8][9] The NSUI, under Choudhary's leadership, demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and announced nationwide protests and a Parliament gherao.[10] NSUI called for a ban on the NTA following the cancellation of the UGC-NET exam.[11]
