Summary

Description
English: "Stepping Stones" - sculpture in Kibble Palace The accompanying plaque reads:-

"Stepping Stones - 1878 William Hamo Thornycroft (1850-1925) Marble A young girl carries her infant brother across a brook. There seems to be no literary source for this group. However, when exhibited in Glasgow in 1880, it was accompanied by the couplet: 'Pausing with reluctant feet / where stream and river meet'. This bears a similarity to lines in the poem 'Maidenhood' by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "Standing, with reluctant feet,/ Where the brook and river meet" (From 'Ballads and Other Poems', 1842) Thornycroft, a Londoner, enjoyed a highly successful career, making many public memorials and some important sculptures of subjects of everyday life. Given by Captain Wallace, 1919
