Этот снимок сделан фото-посланником ESO (ESO Photo Ambassador) Юрием Белецким в обсерватории ESO Ла Силья (La Silla Observatory) в чилийской пустыне Атакама ранним утром в понедельник 9 декабря 2013 г.

Новая звезда была открыта Джоном Сичем (John Seach) из Австралии 2 декабря 2013 г., когда ее яркость приближалась к уровню, доступному для невооруженного глаза. Новая Центавра 2013 – самая яркая новая из всех, которые появлялись в этом тысячелетии.

Данное астрономическое событие принадлежит к разряду классических новых, и его не следует путать с вспышкой сверхновой. Классическая новая появляется в системе двойной звезды, в которой водород из звезды-спутника аккрецирует на поверхность главной звезды. Это ведет к неконтролируемому термоядерному взрыву, резко повышающему яркость главной звезды. Но в случае классической новой звезда не разрушается, как при вспышке сверхновой, а лишь сбрасывает внешний поверхностный слой вещества -- оболочку.

На снимке новая видна слева от Беты Центавра, более голубой и более высоко расположенной из двух ярких звезд в левой нижней части изображения. Южный Крест и Туманность Угольный Мешок тоже видны в верхней части фото.

На переднем плане слева – 3.6-метровый телескоп ESO, введенный в строй в 1976 году. Сейчас он работает со спектрографом HARPS, самым продуктивным охотником за экзопланетами на Земле. Ла Силья, расположенная в 600 км к северу от Сантьяго, на высоте в 2400 м над уровнем моря на краю чилийской пустыни Атакама, когда-то была первой обсерваторией ESO в Чили, крупнейшей обсерваторией своего времени.
