Summary

Description

During the 1987 San Francisco Historic Trolley Festival, ex-Porto (Portugal) car 189 is southbound on the Embarcadero just south and east of Chestnut Street and Pier 29, during a six-week demonstration streetcar service along the Embarcadero (Sep. 11 to Oct. 17, 1987). Because there was not yet any regular streetcar service here at the time, the demo service used disused freight tracks of the San Francisco Belt Railroad, and the electricity to power the car's motor came from a diesel-powered generator on a cart attached to the streetcar's south/east end. In this photo, car 189 was coming towards the camera, pushing the generator. When headed in the opposite direction, it towed the generator.

The building in the lefthand background is the Belt Railroad's 1913-built Engine House (which was a roundhouse); it was later converted into an office building, and one of its tenants is a design firm named "Roundhouse One".
