Imagine yourself at the top of magnificent Al-Qahira Castle, towering over the city of Taiz in southwest Yemen, built for the sultans in the 12th century, and carefully maintained and developed ever since. Yemen comes together, divides and comes together, and divides again, and faction after faction ascends the steep and winding road as they conquer it, however briefly, and look down from 4600 feet over the countryside, every mile of which is a history lesson. Bombed by the Saudi coalition, seized by pro-Saleh security forces and Houthi fighters, taken by the Republican Guard, taken by pro-Hadi security forces, taken by Abu Al Abbas Brigades (linked to Al-Qaeda), and also by Salafist militias.
