Title
2006 T101c, gold posy ring with double row inscription inside from Buttercrambe with Bossall, North Yorkshire
Description
English: gold posy ring

Date: 16th or 17th century

Description: Gold posy ring, formed of a flat broad band, the exterior with stylised foliate motifs, one edge much damaged; inscribed inside in a double row, with traces of black enamel: 1 * LIVE * IN . LOVE * AND THAYR * WYL * DE * THAYR [last word partly illegible]

Discussion: This inscription is not recorded in J. Evans, English Posies and Posy Rings (Oxford 1931), and appears to have been misunderstood by the engraver. The second line may have been intended to read ‘Thy will desire’.

In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
