Summary

Description
English: Comparison of annual w:Warming stripes from four dataset sources: GISS, GHCN-v3, HadCRUT4.6.0.0, Berkeley Earth (all with 1961-1990 reference period).

Datasets that did not have a native "reference period" of 1961-1990 were converted to have such. (Temperature average over the "reference period" determines boundary between blue and red stripes.)

General notes:

  • Credit for general concept of w:warming stripes: climate scientist Ed Hawkins, w:University of Reading, U.K.
  • Data values are visualized using color rather than locations of points on a graph.
  • The average temperature in reference period 1961-1990 determines boundary between blue and red.
  • Horizontal scale is time, from 1850 (extreme left) to 2018 (right). Top two panels begin at 1880.
  • Each hue (up to 8 blue and 8 red) covers a temperature range of 0.1 degrees Celsius.
  • Data is global (not for a locality).
  • A thin purple horizontal bar (purposely designed to be visually discreet) shows the reference period for the diagrams

Full size warming stripes files for the bottom two panels have already been uploaded to Commons, and are linked in their images below. More detailed information is found in the descriptions on those image pages.

Making legends less obvious (gray), in keeping with the non-technical emphasis of the warming stripes principle. Made background black, to emphasize colors.
