Summary

Description 330-PS-6135-2: MSTS LST 287 saves Danish ship Else Basse, August 25, 1953. Approaching the smoldering Danish freighter, Else Basse, the crew of USNS LST 287 make preparations to board the ill-fated ship and fight a fire which threatened a two-million dollar cargo of cryolite. Twenty-four crewmembers and one woman passenger had already abandoned the ship six hours previous and had been rescued by the English steamship Cornerbrook. In a little more than three hours, the crew of the LST operating under the Military Sea Transportation Service, Atlantic Area, checked the fire with only one casualty. After six hours of skilled fire-fighting, the fire was extinguished. (4/21/2015).
