Summary

Description
English: This image is metallographic micrographs of a tungsten penetrator manufactured by a conventional heat treatment process and a self-sharpening tungsten penetrator manufactured by a multi-stage cyclic heat treatment process. Developed in 1993 at the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) in South Korea, this kinetic energy penetrator material technology is manufactured by cyclic heat-treatment and double-cycle sintering processes that repeatedly heat and cool metal materials at specific temperatures during the manufacturing process to separate metallic grain structures. The development of this technology has improved the mushrooming deformation in which the head of the penetrator wears bluntly, which has been a chronic problem with conventional tungsten heavy alloys, resulting in 8–16% increase in penetration, and it was the first case to apply a cyclic heat-treatment process to tungsten alloy penetrators. Currently, K274, K276, and K279 APFSDS rounds, which are serviced by the Republic of Korea Armed Forces, are manufactured through cyclic heat-treatment processes.
