Description
English: Camera flashes at the annual gala at Wainoni Park on 24 January 1914. Shown from top left: (1) The balloon ascent by Captain Jonassen : a snapshot just before the start. The conditions were favourable, and the intrepid aeronaut ascended nearly 4500 ft before releasing his parachute by which he made a slow and graceful descent, landing on the New Brighton tramway at Sandilands; (2) A charming poi dancer; (3) Prize-winners at the baby show. From the left, Napier Frederick Rangitiki, a pretty little five-months old Maori boy, first, George Lionel Boone and Leslie Irving Boone, eleven weeks old twins, second, Jack Goss, six months, third; (4) The young women's race; (5) The balloon ascent soon after the start, showing the position of the parachute with Captain Jonassen on the trapeze;(6) The married women's race; (7) The children's race.
