Notes The sheet was adapted by François Boucher into two separate etching, published as folios 69 and 198 in Figures of differents caracteres. Schéfer 1896, p. 185, suggests from an inscription found on folio 198 in a copy of FdDC held by the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal that the drawings are a portrait of the Abbé Pierre-Maurice Haranger (ca. 1660–1735), canon of the Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois. Objecting to Schéfer's point, Herold and Vuaflart 1929, p. 117, claims that the sitter is the actor Pierre Le Noir, sieur de La Thorillière (1659–1731), relying on Claude Dubosc's reproduction of Boucher's etching captioned La Tourilere comédien.
Coming from two various points, scholars suppose the sitter to be either the Abbé Haranger or La Thorillière. Parker and Mathey 1957–1958, vol. 2, p. 378, cat. no. 914, lists the sheet as Deux études du comédien La Thorillière (?); Rosenberg and Prat 1996, vol. 2, p. 1116, cat. no. 653, lists the sheet as Double portrait du chanoine Haranger.
