English: "Architectura Ecclesiastica Londini / St John of Jerusalem Clerkenwell," etching and engraving, by the British publisher and printmaker Joseph Skelton. Dated 1818. View of St John of Jerusalem, Clerkenwell, London. 280 mm x 183 mm. Lettering beneath the image says: "This Hospital Church situated on the N E of St John's Sq was dedicated to St John by Heraclius 6 March 1185. It being the chief seat of the Religious order of Knights Hospitalers, which society comprehending all that was of high Consideration, splendour pomp & hospitality rendered this site of peculiar importance, for which details the enquirer is refer'd to Dugdales Monast. Newcourt, Camden & Stow. The Original founder in 1100 was Jordan Briset, who also founded an Order of Nuns close by. The present Church, part of the Priory having become private Property was bought by the Commissioners for building 50 New Churches, and consecrated 1723, as a Parish Church, but subordinate to St James. The Rector the Revd Wm Elisha Law Faulkner A.B. in 1814 succeeded the Revd John Evans." Courtesy of the British Museum, London.
