Summary

Description
English: West face of the Meath memorial, Lancaster Gate, executed by the sculptor Joseph Hermon Cawthra in 1934 and erected in honour of Reginald Brabazon,12th Earl of Meath. The West face is labelled ‘East’ to indicate that, in contemplating it, the viewer is looking eastward i.e. in the direction of Marble Arch. The memorial is carved out of Portland limestone and is, alas, succumbing slowly to chemical weathering by acid rain. This is particularly evident in the figure of the young boy seated at ease on the summit, and, more unfortunately for historians of British imperialism, in the shallowly-incised inscriptions, which are gradually becoming illegible. The inscription on the West face reads "Duty, Sympathy, Self-Sacrifice" and conveys an admirable spirit of timeless altruism, still highly relevant today - this in contrast to the more dated and jingoistic sentiments expressed on the other faces of the memorial.
